Bayern 2 – 2 M’gladbach

By: Angela | November 15th, 2008

Today Bayern took on Borrusia Munchengladbach. The first half was a pretty aggressive by both sides. There were a lot of tackles, a lot of attacking and a lot of effort by everyone. It was an opportunity for me to see a little more of National Team player, Marko Marin. For such a young boy, he’s got a fistful of talent. Twenty one minutes in, Luca Toni scored Bayern’s first goal on a gorgeous play by Philipp Lahm and Mark van Bommel. It’s good to see that Toni is finding his form and goal scoring ability again. Hopefully he’ll keep that up.

Again, I’m reminded about how much I don’t like the kind of player that Christian Lell is. He is not the kind of person I’d want on my team. Some… okay a lot of his behavior on the pitch is unsavory and the more I watch him pull some of the stunts that he does, the more I really dislike his playing style. He plays like he’s out to hurt someone and I don’t like that. Today his target was little Marko Marin and at one point he pulled him down by his shoulder which could’ve really hurt Marin. After which he received a yellow and got incredibly angry. I’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it again, if Mark is being made to see someone for his “anger” issues, then Lell should be seeing someone multiple times a day.

Near the end of the first half, Franck Ribery went up for a ball and collided with Levels from M’gladbach which lead to them both bleeding. Franck was bleeding on the back of his head and Levels was bleeding over his eye.

The first half was dominated by Bayern. The second half started with no changes to Bayern and one to M’gladbach. Marko Marin was taking a beating this match. At 55 minutes, Bastian Schweinsteiger received a yellow card for a tackle against Marin.

Miroslav Klose has found himself offside quite a bit lately. It seems he’s taking over the role for Offside!Toni instead. Franck Ribery was taken down inside the box which gave Bayern a penalty kick. He scored and subsequently kissed the armband that holds the name of his wife.

After Ribery’s penalty kick, Schweini came out for Borowski and Lahm came out for Sosa. Earlier, Martin Demichelis had a bit of a limp going on and seemed to either have pulled something or hurt his knee. Hopefully it’s nothing too major and he won’t miss any matches. Though if he did, it would give my Belgian a chance to play, though I’d rather see him play alongside Demichelis than Lucio.

Rob Friend out-jumped Demichelis to score near the 80th minute for M’gladbach. It was the Canadians fourth goal of the season. After the goal, Bayern made a substitution which brought Toni Kroos on for Klose. Not even two minutes later, the American, Michael Bradley scored again for gladbach bringing the score even at 2-2. It was Bradley’s first goal of the season.

Borussia fought back and deserved to walk away with a draw this match. It has to somehow feel like a loss for Bayern after dominating at 2-0 with just 14 minutes to go. M’gladbach have to feel good about this. Near the 90th minute, Jose Ernesto Sosa made a hard challenge and got booked for it. A few moments earlier it looked as if van Bommel might get a yellow, but he didn’t. Toni nearly headed in the winning goal for Bayern, but it went just wide to end the match in a draw. Overall, Bayern pretty much had control over this whole game. The defense looked better. The attacking looked better. This game was probably the best one this season as far as pace and playing goes. The team looked much better and much stronger. There are still some improvements to be made, some stupid mistakes being made, but this was much, much better overall.

And lastly, Marseille seem to be in the market for one Daniel van Buyten. :( And Mark’s agent has spoken out about the rumors that Anatoli Tymoschuk will be coming into the team to make a replacement for Mark. :( He said: “We are still waiting for some news from Bayern. If they don’t want him any more all they have to do is tell us. This is football.” It’s looking more and more like PSV will try and get him back and if not, he may end up at Schalke.

Angela is a lot more tolerant than I’m going to be. Watching this match was like watching a waiter at an upscale restaurant take a perfectly cooked, untouched portion of juicy filet mignon and toss it in the trash.

Closing out victories is an amalgamation of tactics, fitness and a primarly element: mental skill. Any team that has the ability to gain a two goal lead has the ability to hold it, but it takes a particular mental attitude. Klinsmann has apparently still not figured out how to establish this element with Bayern. The tactics and the fitness seem effective at this point, but the mental conditioning in these types of matches is not. This is a club in prime condition to take a 7-0 beating away in the Champions League if they draw the wrong opponent in the round of 16.

Another reason to be really dissatisfied with the team today, is the way they sleep-walked through the first half, compared to the intensity displayed in the last 8 minutes or so. If they came out and played like that, they’d have a 4 goal lead at halftime. Bayern has played the rope-a-dope like this for years in Bundesliga matches, but given the defensive weakness, it’s a terribly frustrating quality.

I hope those last few minutes convinced any holdouts that Kroos should be on the pitch. Look at the energy and the precision of deliveries–he darn near served up a miracle from Toni.

The only way I can feel a little better about this result is that I expected a draw from Schalke and a win from this match; so, we did get 4 points from the consecutive away matches, just not in the manner I expected.

The proverbial tale of two halves according to me. Lahm was up and down the first half and I wonder if it will only take a decapitation before a foul on Lahm is awarded a penalty. I think the ref thought he was off-balance, but that was a pretty bad call. The foul on Ribery was given, but that should have put us up further. Didn’t see much of Lahm in the second though.

I think Sosa is officially a bust – no confidence at all up front. Ze wasn’t around much either, I had no idea who was playing right back (missed the first half hour since I was still asleep).

I’m not as pessimistic as Luke since apparently ‘Gladbach always seems pumped against Bayern, but I think this match showed Bayern lacking depth more than anything. The sooner Altintop comes back, the better this midfield will be.

Bayern didn’t deserve the draw, but if the D decides to go on strike for a couple of minutes like today, I can’t expect anything more.

I just realized this oddity about Bayern’s defence. The center is manned by two South Americans, and the attacking fullbacks are a German and an Italian. Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

Sosa….he gave away that first goal…no question about it. I do not blame Rensing, nor do I blame him for the 2nd goal, There were 3 white shirts on the right side while all the blue shirts were on the left….. WTF? Not sure if Kahn would have stopped either of them as well.

WTF?1 Was lahm that tired? I’m biased though, I’d have to say that he’s my fav anyway.

Jocamryn: Lahm I think was suffering from taking a beating the whole game. The only other person that seems to get fouled as much as him is Ribery.

Luke: I just think the game play improved a bit. The mental ability has been a problem all year, but I don’t think it has anything to do with the players, but everything to do with Klinsmann. There are too many that are unhappy with him and I think that affects your ability to turn in good performances.

I saw earlier a few people were wondering how Brazzo was doing with Juventus.

He’s not a starter, and he hasn’t been, but he’s definitely won the fans over. The guy plays any position, and what he lacks in technical quality he makes up in his work ethic. His brace against Milan last season in a 3-2 win didn’t hurt things either. He’s usually being used as a backup for Zdenek Grygera at right-back, although occasionally he plays in midfield either at RM (for Mauro Camoranesi/perma-glassman Marco Marchionnoi) or LM for Pavel Nedved. Ranieri once made the mistake of playing him in CM, didn’t work too well.

All in all as long as he’s ok with being our utility player/supersub (which I believe was his main role at Bayern) he seems content, after the Milan game he said he was enjoying life in Turin and his position with the Bianconeri. As one of our few intelligent signings and a fan-favorite, thank you all for Brazzo!

By the way, with Nedved’s retirement looming, many Juventini (including myself) see Schweinsteiger as a perfect heir on our left-wing. One of Nedved’s most understated qualities is his defending, and compared to other rumored targets such as Raktic and van Persie Bastian definitely is better in that department, but to be honest I’m basing that entirely on his performances with the national team. I haven’t watched him play for Bayern aside from an occasional Champion’s League match.

There would be something very fitting about Juve signing a guy named Pig Climber.

Though I hope it doesn’t happen, as he is an extremely effective player (as, very unfortunately, is Nedved). I’m also not sure that Basti would trade Munich’s night life for Torino’s (and that’s before one gets to the possibility of Toni having filled his head with anti-Juve propaganda (100% true, of course)).

Bayern did not win this match because of arrogance, they had total control of the first 3/4 of the match but instead of making 1 nil 4 nil they simply played around with the ball and wasted time. in football no matter who you play or how they play, you must always show respect to your opponent Bayern did not do that, by the final 1/4 of the match Bayern were simply waiting around for the final whistle to blow. you cant play football like that… Bayern’s defense lost its shape and were punished by two late gladbach goals. both of those goals would have been totally preventable if Bayern were not playing on autopilot.

You come to expect this with the Bayern team of the last 2 years. They’re mentally weak as Luke said. We are horrific at holding leads. Anytime we get a lead you can immediately notice a slack off in play by everyone. We’re lazy. It’s going to be tough to get these players 100% focused for the full 90 minutes in Bundesliga matches.
