Bayern 4 – 0 Frankfurt

Bayern 4 – 0 Frankfurt
Normally when I write for the offside, I write my post in my window as I’m watching the game. Today, my internet is acting up because we’ve had a series of storms that brought high winds and rain so my internet is patchy. Therefore, I’m writing in word and hoping to be able to post at some point today.
Bayern are taking on Frankfurt amid rumors of the possible firing of Jurgen Klinsmann. Rumors swirl that if they win or draw today, Jurgen will keep his job through the season before he is let go. If they lose, rumor is he’ll be fired straight away.

Lucio is back in defense after missing the game midweek against Barcelona. I haven’t watched the game, but do have it recorded. Though, by what I’ve read, it was absolutely dreadful and I probably shouldn’t watch it.

Butt is getting a second chance in goal. This pleases me. I don’t think h stood a chance in Barca for the way it sounded like the defense played. I’m looking forward to seeing him play a little bit more. Hopefully he will be given the opportunity more often.

The game kicks off with a wonderful goal by Franck Ribery in which he pays tribute to his best friend, Daniel van Buyten, who is still home with his ill father. Showing a supportive ‘5’ on the palm of his hand and pointing to it when he scored.

A great stop by Butt. The team is looking better overall today. Though, it’s still early in the match so we’ll see how they hold up. I still miss Miroslav Klose very much. Toni isn’t much without some support from Bayern’s very own Mother Teresa.

At 16:30 there is a great ball over the wall from Franck Ribery in which Luca Toni hits a gorgeous volley into the back of the net. And this one actually looked like he meant to do it. Most of the time Toni’s height leads his goals to look like they’re purely accidental, but this one looked very much like it was intended. Good job on the 35th goal for Bayern.

Lucio had a few words with Sosa when he didn’t get a ball and shortly after that Sosa gives the ball away to Frankfurt again. I really wonder about his play. I still haven’t seen anything out of this kid that makes me think he’s worth having. I see people all over the place talking about how wonderful he is, but I just don’t get it.

Toni had another opportunity, but it is cleared away given Bayern a corner. The corner is unsuccessful and play goes on. Ochs fouled Ze Roberto which was quickly followed by a foul against Sosa giving Bayern a free kick. Some great give and go between Captain Dutch, Mark van Bommel, and Franck Ribery.

Ochs seems to be a bit of a rough player. Chris has an opportunity for Frankfurt, but sends it high and over the bar. They get their first corner and it is unsuccessful. Butt makes he save and play goes to Bayern. Sosa has a good run, loses his balance and Ribery recovers the ball.

Ribery gets a minor injury to his ankle which requires some sideline work, but he rejoins the team just a few minutes later. Bastian Schweinsteiger takes a corner at 36 minutes and its headed in by Lucio bringing Bayern’s lead to 3-0.

Christian Lell is given a yellow card for trying to walk in the air on one of Frankfurt’s players heads. Undoubtedly deserving that one. Not at all surprised that was a Lell move either. Ochs now receives a yellow card for a foul against Ze Roberto with five minutes to go in the first half.

Butt seems to possess a bit more confidence and about him when he’s between the posts. Maybe that has an effect on how the team plays. He seems to be a bit more confident about his ability. Philipp Lahm sits in the stands watching the game with his girlfriend. I’m sure he’d much rather be playing than sitting up there in the stands.

Previously, I have always called Captain Dutch; The Flying Dutchman and it is very clear why. The man can’t keep his feet on the ground. Even when kicking the ball across for a pass, he gets a little air beneath him before making contact. Both feet come off the ground. Maybe he should be Flying Captain Dutch? ;)

Van Bommel steals the ball and gives it to Ribery who gets tied up with some Frankfurt players in time to end the first half. The team walks off with a 3-0 lead and you can see Captain Dutch already conferring with Lucio on things. Whether you like van Bommel or not, one thing can not be denied, he gives his all to his team and he’s always being a leader. I happen to love this about him.
Second half starts with one change for Bayern and that is Massimo Oddo in for Christian Lell. Klose is in the stands with his wife and twins, looking very intense while he watches his boys play on without him. I’m sure he’s another one that would much rather be playing.

Schweinsteiger brings the score to 4-0 with some triangular football. Captain Dutch is all dimples and very proud of his boys at this point I think. Schweinsteiger just happened to be in the right place at the right time as the ball got through the feet of the keeper and he fell leaving Schweini completely unmarked and the goal wide open.

Franck Ribery is replaced by Lukas Podolski. I’m not sure what that’s about because there is still thirty minutes left to play and surely Franck might’ve been able to score again. I’m curious if he drew the five on his hand himself or if he had some help.

Sosa fouls one of the Frankfurt players and he is being attended to on the pitch. Meanwhile Franck and Lucio hit the showers. Bayern are still looking pretty solid. Shortly after, they show the Frankfurt player being helped off and down to the locker room.

Luca Toni gets another goal, but he is offside so it doesn’t count. He was just slightly offside, but offside none the less. Collision in the box which takes down Schweini and it should’ve resulted in a penalty, but the ref didn’t bother to call it. Frankfurt seems to have basically given up at this point. They don’t seem to be trying to much at all anymore. Bayern are still pushing forward, possibly looking to take an even further lead.

Andreas Ottl takes a shot himself, but it sails high and over the bar. Not anywhere close and nothing for the keeper to do, but watch it go over. Van Bommel takes a foul and shortly after that the game is over. Bayern walks away with a 4-0 win over Frankfurt. It amazes me how this team can play such crap and then come back like this.

Not sure what the punchline is here. I guess the best way to sum it up is “there’s a mammoth, enormous, mega gap between a team like Barcelona and the Bundesliga mediocrity.” Certainly, we’re a better squad at home, but today we felt like the Varsity team and Frankfurt the junior varisty whereas mid-week Barcelona made us look like the JV team to their varsity squad.

Butt looked good in goal. Ok, he did not have to make any great saves and was rarely under pressure, but he was calm and made our back line comfortable. Anytime they passed back to him he cooly controlled it and found an open man. His ball distribution was excellent and anytime a cross came in and was in control. I cannot say the same for Rensing.

Sosa is so-so for me. He can show flashes of excellence with great flicks and creativity but he can also be a bit lazy by failing to make runs and opening space for teammates. I do like how he gets ticked if he gives up a ball and trucks it back to play D. I think he’s a keeper though. He can only get better and he already looks solid out there.

I’m glad Klinnsy survived and I hope he at least finishes out the season. The facts remain for the off-season though: We need another central defender, hopefully someone who can start or at a minimum put pressure on Lucio/Demichelis for starting. I’m sorry but Demichels is not a starter for us if we’re serious about contending in the CL. He is just too slow and gets beaten too easily by top strikers. Also, clearly we need a back to replace Lell/Oddo. Those 2 spots should be our main priorities in off-season. A new goalie? Yea, maybe that too. We’ll see how the rest of the season turns out.

This match went very much according to script if you’re a Bayern fan, and there’s really not a whole lot of analysis that adds much. I’ll agree with Shane on Sosa, I don’t want to say he’s inconsistent, that doesn’t seem like the right word. It’s just that he’s invisible too often.

A word on the transfers. First, if they want to shore up right back, they ought to pony up for Rafinha. Then perhaps they can bring back Görlitz as a backup. The other guy I’d love to see them get for a right back would be Anyukov from Zenit, but I don’t think he’s going anywhere. It’s clearer to me all the time that Bayern should go after Enke as well. It would really be a marriage of convenience, he would get the international exposure he needs to lay claim to the national team keeper spot, and Bayern would get an immediate upgrade at the position with no need for additional seasoning. Hell, he might even save a few of Lucio’s blunders.

I totally agree with Luke, Rafinha and Gorlitz as backup, and as far as it concerns to the goalie, I still hesitate, I rather sign Adler, for he could be the man for a decade, but Enke is not a bad option, it depends on the target, a short time solution or a long term one

Luke: I agree with you. Though I might go with Imicus on Adler as well. Either would be a great addition for Bayern.

I’m really on the fence about Sosa. I don’t really see great qualities about him. Sometimes he’s good, but far too often he makes big blunders. He actually reminds me a lot of my feelings on Lucio.

Unfortunately, neither Adler nor Neuer would probably consider a switch to “FC Hollywood.” I didn’t see much of Butt in this game and tried not to see much of him in the (gulp) Barcelona game (not Butt’s fault. Lell, I have had it with you). After Wolfsburg, I just don’t see a way back for Rensing. After Rensing’s performance as a fill-in against AC Milan in 07, I really had high hopes for him. But Bayern is just not the place for a young GK to try to develop, especially in Kahn’s shadow. Enke has been urged to move from Hannover and doesn’t appear to have a long-standing hatred of Bayern, so it might work out.

Bayern is getting Olic and Tymoshchuk in the off season. That’s two needs filled. I’m actually most excited about Tymoshchuk. He could be the calming, self-assured influence Bayern need. Next, the team need a strong right or left back. I like Oddo, he’s good for keeping Toni happy, and I think he’s good in the attack, but he isn’t spry enough for his main job of defending. Bayern need a new right or left back — whatever Lahm doesn’t want to do. Personally, even though Lahm prefers the right, I think he does his best work on the left. As for the center, I don’t know about Breno, yet. I’m going to stick with Demichelis/Van Buyten + someone. Lucio is good for now, but I don’t get the feeling he’ll stick around much longer. Laugh all you want, but I also like that Van Buyten can fill in as the poor man’s Luca Toni.

I admire Bayern’s attempts to bring guys up from their youth teams, like Lell and Ottl, but they can’t use that as an excuse to keep from purchasing quality talent. Ottl is good for more chances once Ze moves on, but Lell should never be more than a squad player.

Klinsi… Oh, Klinsi. His talent is managing, probably not actual coaching. For sure he hasn’t lost the dressing room, but Loew was the tactician in the nationalelf….

    Okay, I’m just rambling. sigh

Juliet: You’ll get no laughing from me on the van Buyten factor. I think he could be an asset to Bayern if they’d find the right way to use him. He and Lucio don’t pair well together and Demichelis is better when van Buyten is anywhere on the pitch. I still think that Demichelis plays a better midfield than he does defense as of late. I guess we’ll have to see where that goes.

I’m with you on Lell as well. I’ve had it with him. Yesterday only adds to my frustration of him. And I can’t wait for Lahm to get back. He was definitely missed by me.

It seems to me that the game is finally starting to slow down enough for Sosa to work himself in. It was good to see him make a bunch of move and also hassle the Frankfurt players. Sure this was a major downgrade in opposition, but he couldn’t even do that before.

Bayern was strong defensively last season, but the template shown by Zenit in the second leg has been matched with devastating effect by a bunch of teams this season. Bayern’s central defense does not match Klinsmann’s philosophy and that’s been cruelly exposed. Klinsmann demands speed, and none of the four choices really has that attribute.

That said, with all the options Bayern has in midfield, how about a 2-6-2?

Personally I would like to see Bayern purchase Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow to cover the right side of defense with Lahm on the left! Both are very attacking wing backs and would give Bayern a more even keel when attacking down the flanks. Instead of being lopped sided on the left! Also we need a fast Centre back, but whom I don’t know? I have to make a serious comment about this Jurgen Klinsmann quote on the FCB website:

“We have big plans for Tuesday night, because we want to make a fitting exit from the Champions League.”

That maybe so! However, sorry Jurgen thats the wrong kind of language! As a fan I want to be hearing you address the players with fighting words something like this:

We’ll treat this game as if the tie was 0-0 or we were only 1-0 down, and the players should be thinking along the same lines also!! They should be watching the video of the Champions League Quarter Final tie between Deportivo La Coruna and AC Arseholes as inspiration!!!
Deportivo lost away to AC 4-1 and came back to win the home return leg 4-0!!!! So it can be done!!! Although its a very difficult ask, but thats the atitude and deeds on the pitch I wish to see from the players on Tuesday night, thanks very much Jurgen!!!!!

Going into any match with the attitude of you’ll be exiting isn’t the right one to have. I don’t care if you lost the last game 14-0. You go out there like you’re going to clean house – even if it’s not possible. That quote just really irks me, but then I’ve never been a fan of Klinsmann’s coaching style.

Juliet, I think that for Adler and Neuer the only chance to play regularly the CL is switching to a team that assures (except accidents like last year)that level, and in Germany only Bayern can do that. As I see things now, Rensing should have been playing on loan last year at least, so he could have polished those flaws, or so Bayern staff could have noticed he has not the level required for our team (I still don´t Know, Kahn and Hitfield say he has it). Finally I consider the goalkeeper question is the most important one for the future, and it should be solved this summer, without short time solutions.

I agree with Zermatt and Angela. If there are big plans afoot, Klinsmann, why assume a UCL exit?

While everyone’s saying the dressing room’s not lost confidence in the coach, what if the coach has lost confidence in the team?

Much better played. The rest of Bayern’s schedule is very easy with the exception of Stuttgart. Hoffenheim lost it when they lost their striker and Leverkusen has fallen on hard times. Woldsburg will slip up at least once, and if Bayern can keep getting 4-0 results against the bottom feeders, they will be able to take this in the end. They just can not lose another game, and draws are even bad atm. Also, I forgot who commented on my Hertha being smoke and mirrors, but the mirror appears to have broken.
