Bayern 5 – 1 Hannover 96

By: Angela | March 7th, 2009

van Buyten celebrates his goalFor this match, Bayern host Hannover and Captain Dutch is suspended. Lucio takes the armband, Demichelis slides up into the holding role which is usually filled by van Bommel and the BEAUTIFUL Belgian Bull, Daniel van Buyten, gets a start too. I suppose there can’t ever be a game in which all my guys get to play. That just cant be done for me it seems, but at least Big Dan is getting some much deserved playing time. Podolski makes another start and I hope to see Toni back soon because all Podolski deserves to be doing is sitting on the bench and waiting for his time to lave for Cologne. Philipp Lahm also has recovered from his flu and makes the start today as well.

It’s snowing currently so the pitch is a bit sloppy. A great cross from Hamit Altintop that Klose just missed. Surely it would’ve gone in if he had made contact, but he was just shy. Sixteen minutes in Lucio slips up and allows for Steiner to score taking Hannover into the lead 1-0.

Podolski gets his first chance and takes his time, barely putting anything behind the ball so it went wide of the net. The announcers keep saying you have to feel sorry for Lucio, but that’s all bull. It’s time for him to eat some serious bench until he starts playing like he should get to start every match. I am so aggravated with him lately. More than usual.

Twenty minutes in, Daniel van Buyten (have I mentioned how much I absolutely adore this man!?) saves Bayern’s butt once again and scores a gorgeous header. The cross comes beautifully from Schweinsteiger and van Buyten heads it home with ease. How he is continually put on the bench and Lucio gets to start every game is really beyond me. Just five minutes later, Miroslav Klose follows up with a gorgeous header of his own, scoring goal number ten this season and taking Bayern into the lead 2-1.

Around 32 minutes, Podolski scores, but it doesn’t count as the whislte had been called for offsides. A few minutes later, Altintop redeems and scores his first goal of the season for Bayern bringing the score to 3-1. Klose got clipped by Enke and it seems like it should’ve been called because the challenge was nowhere near the ball, but it didn’t get called.

Lahm flicked a beautiful ball into the middle, but Hamit was just late and didn’t get it in. This line seems to be working a little bit better than the previous one. Rensing is having a decent game again as well. van Buyten nearly scored a second time, but it was just stopped. He is having a fantastic game and playing his butt off. Surely Klinsmann has to notice the dedication of Dan to a team that has given him no reason to not walk away and yet here he is, playing all out and not holding anything back. Showing that he deserves a spot on this team. Perhaps Podolski could take some pointers.. Bayern lead 3-1 at the half.

Hannover made one change at the half while Bayern made none. Lucio got called for a hand ball, awarding Hannover with a free kick. Rensing is really holding his own this match. Maybe I should’ve talked sooner about him needing to step up and give people a reason to stop talking about how terrible he is. Ze Roberto tried his hardest to score for Bayern and it was very close, but it went just wide.

Podolski tried once more to find the goal, but was unsuccessful. He went wide and hit a post that is beside the goal. He probably could’ve gotten it into the net if he had used his right foot, but he went left and it went wide.

Did anyone else notice that Massimo Oddo has died his hair black? Looks good. Yes, I’m still a girl. I can’t change that. ;) Hamit Altintop has been injured. It looks like he might’ve gotten his studs stuck in the pitch and possibly twisted a knee or something. He hopped off the pitch and will be substituted by Andreas Ottl. Schlaudraff takes a free kick that is headed away by van Buyten. What a great game he is having. Yes, I know I said it, but I’m going to keep saying it. The boy deserves much more playing time than he’s getting – and I’m not talking about being brought in at the 83rd minute of matches either.

72 minutes in and Lukas Podolski finally does something productive for Bayern and heads in a lovely goal bringing the score up to 4-1. The cross was delivered spot on by Ze Roberto and Podolski just headed the ball beautifully into the net.

For whatever reason, at 76 minutes Klinsmann has decided to bring Breno on and bring van Buyten out. This doesn’t make me a happy girl at all. Sometimes I think this team and some of its players get rewarded for playing badly and when you work your butt off and play brilliantly you get rewarded by receiving bench time. Further proof that Klinsmann is all about politics is the substitution of Podolski for Landon Donovan. Not that Podolski has been a great asset to Bayern as of late because he hasn’t, but he’s certainly put forth enough effort this match that he should’ve been allowed to stay on the full 90 minutes. van Buyten should’ve been granted that luxury as well.

Bayern are awarded a corner kick and Oddo sets it up beautifully but it is clearned by Hannover. Though Bayern keep it in and Ottl clips it over and Donovan tries to put it home, but it is saved by Enke. Bayern are keeping most of the possession now and recovering the ball fairly quickly when it’s turned over. Miroslav Klose had a good opportunity to bring the score up to 5-1, but just missed. However, Demichelis came right back and put the the ball in the net by heading in a cross from Ze Roberto with one minute left in the match.

I still think they didn’t play their best football. Hannover clearly played some very lack-luster football which allowed Bayern to take control of the match. Hannover’s defense has been completely transparent allowing Bayern to easily break through their lines and rail them with a 5-1 beating.

It isn’t often that your team wins 5-1 and you find a lot to be unhappy about. But once again, these guys look like they never practice together. Podolski, Demichelis and Oddo were all particularly awful in my opinion, and that group covers two of the goals! I understand it was a wet pitch, but Lucio–you weren’t trying to stymie Demba Ba, it was Jiri Stajner, who to me has always looked as though he should be operating the refreshment stand, not actually be in the starting 11. Honorable mention for a bad performance was Ottt–while he can probably safely use the excuse of his lack of playing time, his passing was awful, and when scoring opportunities were laid right in front of him, he didn’t seem to know what to do.

The injury situation didn’t get any better with both van Butyen and Altintop going down. I didn’t detect that van Buyten was injured either Angela, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Altintop though, is rapidly becoming the Terrell Davis of the Bundesliga.

Probably the best thing to come out of this match was the nice work by Schweinsteiger. Unfortunately, I don’t think we’re going to move him over to the left anytime soon.

I’ve also got to salute Robert Enke. This match could easily have been 8-1 or 9-1. I guess a lot of “homer” fans will say that about their club, but I think it really was true today. The stop on Donovan was probably the most brilliant. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, the guy needs to get out of Hannover.

Hi Angela! Did you see the Leverkusen-Bayern DFP Cup match on Wednesday? This time maybe Lucio made a mistake, but on that cup match he was one of the best on the pitch. He did even score a goal. He was the first I think who showed urge and willing to come back after the conceded goals. He is also selected to the Brazilian national squad.

Luke: You are brilliant as always. It’s pretty sad when you think about how great of a win this was considering their past efforts and still there is so much to complain about. I’m hoping van Buyten is okay, but that’s more because he’s my guy. ;)

Harry: I didn’t see the DFB Cup match because I was working, but I gotta tell you honestly, that wouldn’t have redeemed Lucio. I know he’s on the NT and he’s even the Captain there, but he is horrid for Bayern 99% of the time. He makes stupid mistakes and often isn’t around to defend when he should be. There is nothing that would make me change my opinion of him now.

    Hi again! :)
I read on the homepage of Bayern, that both van Buyten and Altintop got some injury. van Buyten has some problem with his ankle, Altintop with his thigh. That’s why they were brought out.

I was about to post a serious comment especially in reference to the bits about Podolski. But then it hit me that the author is merely a Van Buyten fan girl to whom serious comments matters not.

I agree with Luke. Granted I was half asleep from working all night, but I cannot fathom how atrocious Bayern’s central defense is even now. Once Lucio slipped, no one was close enough to track back! Why was Lucio traipsing out wide?

This was a good scoreline, but it is sufficient to say Bayern won because of size. Every goal was the in the air. OK, so Altintop’s wasn’t but it was Klose’s headed flick-on that allowed Hamit to go around and score. I think he had something to prove to himself after missing the one-on-one with the GK against Werder.

If Ribery does go, along with vB and Ze eventually, sure there’ll be a drop in creativity, but no one will be able to fault the work rate. If Tymoschuk deal works out, Bayern’ll still have a formidable midfield. Boro, Tymo, Schweini, Hamit and maybe Baumjohann and Kroos – very intriguing.

In there nearer future though, at least there’s a relaxing game mid-week, before the revenge match against Bochum.

Ashlee: You have no idea what you’re talking about and obviously don’t read this blog regularly.

A Kap: Does Lucio ever stay in the back these days? I can’t really recall a game recently when he’s held his line.
You make a very good point about size. The last couple games in the BuLi, most of Bayern’s goals have come from headers. Against Hannover, all except Hamit’s were headers. It’s a little disconcerting.
Schweini has been brilliant the last couple of games. Unfortunately no one is capitalizing on his plays.

    - Can’t wait for Toni to be fully healed. Poldi/Donovan are non-existent. I wish Donovan would succeed, but I just don’t see him ever being a decent 3rd striker for us.

    - Demichelis is terrible as holding midfield. I was pretty surprised we didn’t start Ottl.

    - Rensing is never going to be a top class keeper. He punches when he should catch, he comes out when he should stay in, he doesn’t come up with big saves that often. I’d trade Rensing for Enke in a heartbeat.

    - Schweini looked great. Altintop can never stay healthy, but plays well when he is.

    - Easy stretch of games coming up and we should be getting 3 points in each of them. It’s looking like a crazy Bundesliga finish. 4 teams tied for 2nd and shocking Hertha 4 points ahead. Also, Schalke is starting to heat up and close in on the pack.

    - Very excited for quarterfinals CL draw. I am hoping for winner of Villareal/Panathinaikos, Arsenal/Roma or Atletico/Porto (Porto scares me though, that team is hot after a bad start to their season). Please no Man Utd is all I ask.

Here’s my theory on Lucio: Ever since his Leverkusen days, Lucio’s primary instinct has been to move way up the park. He did that early in his career as well with Magath, until he was forced to sit back because of the obvious hole left in his place.

When Hitzfeld came back, the counter attacking flank attack strategy, with Hitzfeld’s conservative approach prevented him any offensive moves.

Given Klinsmann’s propensity to attack at all costs, Lucio is having a ball, allowing the opposition to work the counter to maximum effect, and possibly exorcising himself of 4 years of frustration.

Shane: I agree with you on all points. I would definitely trade Rensing for Enke as well. Some of the mistakes that Rensing makes frustrate the heck out of me.

Schweini has been fantastic the last games. I have been very impressed with his play lately. He lost it for awhile, but has been improving each game. Altintop I love watching play. It’s unfortunate that he’s been plagued by injuries and will now be out for 2-3 weeks.

A Kap: That could be it, but now he’s just leaving me frustrated. ;)

lucio better head to the bench, coz we need Van buyten on the field. sometimes his defending can be hapless, but he works hard and scores….which is awesome.

I’d like to commend Daniel Van Buyten for his spirited play, determination, and strong desire to do well and what is best for the team. Five star rating for the Hannover match!! Lucio take note or piss off to Milan in the summer!

Twinkle & zermatt – Agreed. van Buyten has done a commendable job as of late. And he’s trying very hard to prove that he deserves a spot. Others should take notice because he’s definitely proving a point here.
