Bayern Munich 2 – 1 Schalke

By: Angela | November 9th, 2008

The boys were back in action today taking on Schalke 04. Before today’s match, Schalke hadn’t conceded any goals before the 29th minutes, but that all changed when my favorite, Captain van Bommel, took the ball down the right side and fooled all of Schalke’s team who had Miroslav Klose covered. Mark dropped the ball back to a completely free Luca Toni who put it in the back of the net. Schalke responded quickly with a goal of their own to bring the score even at 1-1.

Rensing still has his moments of uncertainty, but there are moments when he looks completely unstoppable. There are still issues, even though it’s still early in the first half, in the defense, though Lucio has made a couple really great efforts. He’s still going to have to have several good matches for me to be convinced that Bayern shouldn’t be using the combination of Breno/van Buyten. Rensing had a really great save 20 minutes in. If not for him being spot on, the ball would’ve been in the back of the net.

A beautiful goal from Ribery. An amazing pass from Ze Roberto. I am still so impressed by his level of play. It continues to improve each game. It looks like Franck’s wife, Wahiba, has brought him some luck. When he was out injured, she wrote her name on a piece of cloth from his bandages that he wore during recovery from his surgery. Wahiba told Franck that he would play better and score if he wore it. Well, it looks like she was right. Since he’s started wearing it, he has scored in every match.

Borowski received a yellow at 35 minutes… as the announcer put it, for bad acting. I’m not entirely sure what happened, but it looked like Boro got hung up with his feet being in between the other players, but Boro tried to plead something about his hand/wrist being held. I’m not sure that was the case, but there wasn’t a good angle on it.

At the half, Bayern led 2-1. I am glad to see Oddo getting more and more playing time. This makes me very pleased. I am becoming a really big fan of his. Podolski didn’t get much of a chance to shine in Toni’s off time, but with Bayern looking to aquire another striker in January, it looks as though that might be the opportune time for Podolski to make his exit. He was missing from today’s game due to having recurring back problems. In all this mess with him on the bench and not being happy, I just hope they let him go. He doesn’t deserve the treatment he has received and it really irritates me that no-one is hearing what he’s saying about why he wants to leave Bayern.

Shortly into the second half, Ze Roberto was replaced by Christian Lell. I don’t know why this happened. In my opinion, Lell should be continually warming the bench. Ze is a class player and is much more needed on the pitch than Lell is.

The pace has really slowed down in the second half. A lot more aggressive tackling and a lot more showmanship in who can fall down the best, but the pace has slowed dramatically from the first half. So much so that even van Buyten kicked the ball back onto the pitch from the sidelines. Rensing is still a little shakey. He has had some good saves here, but I think that the guarantee of the number 1 spot when Oli left has made him slack a little bit and there isn’t really any reason for him to try and play up to his absolute potential because he is guaranteed that spot. No one else on the team is guaranteed their spot so why should he be exempt from such rules? The same should apply to everyone.

Schalke had a good chance to tie things up in extra time, but they weren’t successful. I am really enjoying watching Oddo as time goes on. Bayern are trying to keep possession in these last minutes and in a last ditch effort, Sosa took a run and should’ve brought the game to 3-1, but he just popped the post and missed the goal. Bayern walk away with a 2-1 victory. After this win, Bayern are still in third place, but they are only one point behind top of the table Leverkusen and Hoffenheim who each have 25 points.

At the end, van Bommel was giving his boys, Oddo at the time I seen it, some post match congratulatory love and while van Bommel was with Oddo, Miro was letting Franck know that he thought he had a great match. Franck continues to improve. Today was okay for me. I didn’t think it was great, but it was better. It seems that Bayern are taking strides in the right direction.

Lastly, I have my best friend visiting from Holland so I will likely be posting limited for the next couple weeks while she is over. I will do the best I can, but won’t promise anything. Stay safe and see you next time. :)

This was an odd match. There was a sense that neither team really had a lot of energy or even a lot of desire to be on the field, and by no means did it have the feel of a battle for the top of the table. However, a win at Schalke is always above expectations, and this is one to be savored. We may not yet be at the top of the table, but we are all the way back from whatever sinkhole of transition and adjustment we fell into early in the season.

*Rensing has matured before our eyes. There hasn’t be any hint of that shakiness in this win streak and again, not much he could do on the one that got by.

*Best defensive effort of the year, which may not be saying a lot, but despite giving up a lot of chances, and being curiously unskilled on clearances, all and all after that bad stretch in the first half, and one squeaker just before the end, Bayern actually looked like a competent defense. Oh, and that’s without Lahm, mind you.

*I think Kroos earned some more starts. I would argue that he creates more off the dead ball situations than Schweini, and although he seems to worry a bit more about where he is on the field than what’s happening in the play at times, I think it’s important for him to be out there.

*Is Jose Ernesto Sosa destined to go down in history as the man who made the Getafe-Miracle cross..and nothing else? It sure seems that way.

*Didn’t you love how the referee clearly realized at halftime that if he kept giving cards at the same rate, the match would end 8 on 8? Borowski could be forgiven his yellow, at least there was actual grabbing on that play, Toni’s dive leading to Ernst’s yellow would have been a more deserving dive-yellow.

*Isn’t it a great feeling when you have a one goal lead and the best idea the other team can come up with is Asamoah? It was sort of like sending in Gomez in the Euro Final..um, really? uh, ok, sure try it but I don’t think so.

*6 points in the next two matches is very do-able, and actually quite important, because we’re going to have two big showdown matches after that. I’m looking for the team to basically mail in the CL advancement and focus on the league.

Jean-Pierre: My understanding about Sagnol was that he had surgery on his achilles tendon. He played in some of the preseason matches, and did look like he had regained most of his old form. He should be available to play in the new year at some point.

Luke, I was worried more about the late tackling than anything else. I do agree that this game was just a decent defensive effort in that Bayern absorbed a lot of pressure in the first half hour. Virtualy everytime the ball came over the middle Lucio and Micho attempted to hoof it up. When they didn’t, the ball was either given away or they were hacked down. I Think the ref did a good job of making sure the players knew who the boss was. Some of those tackles on Ribery though should have received cards.

What was weird to me was that amidst the Schalke assault, Bayern was not able to set up a decent counter. The second half was probably the most boring I have seen so far this year in any match.

It was like the Germany teams of old – take the lead, shut up shop and get physical – until Sosa whose bad first touch prevented him from slotting the ball home. That was pure bad luck, but one could argue the goal would have been undeserved in the context of the entire game.

Wishful thinking on the 3-1 ;)

Jean Pierre – Podolski wants to leave more for personal reasons than that of the lack of playing time. Koln want him, but they can’t afford what Bayern will want to sell him for if they sell him. If they hold him until his contract expires, I would imagine he’ll end up in Koln. Sagnol had surgery and is out.

A Kap: I agree, some of those tackles on Ribery should’ve been cards, but the Ref did a pretty decent job though out the match. I believe you’re right on the second half being the most boring. And I still think Bayern should be playing van Buyten. ;)

3 points at Schalke is a great thing. We’re on a serious roll in league as of late and I love it. We’re finally getting healthy and Jurgen’s system seems to be paying off.

    Couple thoughts on individual performances:

Rensing: Looks good on making big saves. Needs to work on his distribution (continues to give possession away for no reason) and catching the ball when he can instead of giving unnecessary corners/second chances. He’s growing on me though.

Defense: Great day, except for the clearances. Oddo needs to work on this bad. Lucio with an excellent day. I love Ze Roberto back there. Looking forward to Lahm being back though.

Midfield: Kroos did look good on set pieces. Otherwise I barely noticed him on the field. Borowski has become an essential part of this team. Ditto on Van Bommel and of course Ribery. I really like our midfield and Schweini in there gives it an added punch.

It will be interesting to see if we try to push for 1st in the CL group or rest up and settle for 2nd. Regardless of what happens in match 5 we’ll need a draw or win in Lyon to secure first.

The team is getting hot for sure. Need to get 6 points in the next two matchesm and still have both Leverkusen and Hoffengeim coming soon. The opportunity is there to not only get in first by the winter break but to put some distance there.

@ Angela Ze Roberto had that new athletic tape on his thigh, forgot which, in the second half. He did get up very slowly after he had hurt himself in the first half on the foul where he received the yellow card. My guess is Klinsmann saw something regarding that injury and went to the bench as a precaution. He has probably been our most valuable player over the whole season, though Ribery is really getting back into form now. that Goal by Ribery with Ze Roberto assisting was absolutely brilliant by both players. I would love to know where Ze found that fountain of youth and if it’s for sale anywhere to help my aching body…lol

The champions league is looking great. The prospect of being in first place, and having a good lead by the break is looking great. The pieces are all starting to come in to place.

Lucio is looking so much better now. He is moving much better. It’s my belief he was hiding an injury. He was slow and lumbering for much of the start of the season.

Not much to criticize today, as it is always good when you beat a top team in their building.

and podolski possibly to koln??? that would be ridiculous, he is a world class player, he has the capacity of even growing more and more and more. i dont think koln is a club for him btw lyon is also looking for a striker (?) because benzema wants to leave

with Klinnsman’s newly adopted counter attacking offensive scheme Bayern will simply outscore most of the teams in the Bundesliga as German teams never sit back or slow games down and that makes them extremely vulnerable to quick counterattacking moves so Bayern will score at least two goal against almost every bundesliga team they play from now on. This game against Shalke was a prime example both goals followed the same patter Shalke over extended themselves Bayern countered Bayern scored. The defensestill leaves a lot to be desired Shalke scored too easily, but for bundesliga games the defense does not have to be exceptional it simply has to be moderate and that will be enough to stop most bundesliga teams from scoring two gals. Bayern are begging to look like a big fish in a small pond again just like last season. the real challenge to Bayern Munich lies in the champions league, and now Bayern’s domestic problems seemed to have been solved, Klinnsman has to work on the more important task of improving Bayern’s form in Europe.

    Angela,
It is rather weird that Van Buyten has barely been considered recently even for substitution, but I am not all that surprised. When Klinsmann was with the Nationalelf, I found his substitutions to be almost robotic in their consistency and to a certain extent that can be said about Bayern.

It happened this past weekend as well, with Lell and Ottl coming on midway through the second. I wonder where the rotation policy has gone.

I don’t get the Van Buyten love, guys. I think the one thing he brings to the table that the other defenders don’t is size–which has certainly been on display in an offensive regard in the Champions League. So maybe he’s worth bringing in for certain tactical situations where he can use that size to his advantage, but not much more. He’s got to be the slowest defender on the team. And it is really clear that Bayern is going another direction with its center-backs in the future (Hummels-Breno)so it probably all depends on whether he’s willing to accept a reserve role for the duration of his contract, otherwise, maybe he moves after this season for a low, but reasonable price.

Winning away to Schalke was a great feat as apart from last season we have not done well at this stadium previously. Credit where credit is due Lucio finally decided to turn up today and play like a central defender! Can he please do it more often, not just away to Schalke! I think it is clear for all interested parties, Podolski should go as he did absolutely nothing yet again as demonstrated in the Champions League clash away to Fiorentina! I still don’t know why we let Jan Schlaudraff go at the end of last season as he would have made the perfect number three striker behind Toni and Klose. We really should have let Podolski go in the summer as he his clearly not happy at Bayern and it makes no sense to keep him here!

I think there’s more than one way to look at the Van Buyten situation. I agree with Luke that his size is a big advantage, but considering how Fiorentina was taking the aerial route in the 2nd leg, I think he would have been a good fit.

I think he would be decent partnering with Micho, since with Lucio he would generally be alone for a counter if Lucio is stuck in a forward position.

I would like to think Bayern could theoretically increase the asking price for him by giving him a little bit more playing time, and if he really does not fit into the plans, offload him in the summer to a sucker English club willing to pay top dollar ;) Maybe I’m being too cynical there…

“Galaxy star Donovan trains with Bayern Munich”~ESPN – USA

Landon Donovan on FCB?! I’m not sure about what role he had in LA Galaxy’s season (or lack thereof), nor does his record in the Bundesliga shine. If he’s being considered as a temporary stop-gap replacemnt for Poldi, I don’t find it the least bit entertaining.

Things are trucking along, this weekend shouldn’t be too surprising and with alot of luck, we could come away as the leage leaders.

Being the MLS off-season, so it’s like when David Beckham used to train at Arsenal to keep himself fit. Though we know Beckham will be at AC Milan on loan come this January.

According to what I know, Donovan will be at Bayern for 10 days.

I understand it’s “only for training” but c’mon. Speculation in this arena tends to at least be partially true. Remember Borowski, Klose, Jansen? Anyway, Donovan shares a special relationship with klinsi. I just hope that this does not cloud his judgement.

Yes Landon is a National Player…but a MLS player who really in my opinion, their championship team compares at best to a 2nd League team. Our(US National)players need more experience in Europe if we are ever going to succeed on the international field.

Back to Bayern, the only way I see Poldi going back to Koln is if he rides his contract out. Koln simply cannot buy out his contract without hurting themselves.

    Jocamryn,
From the players perspective and that of US football in general, there is no substitute for experience in Europe. However, from the MLS perspective, sending their best players out dilutes the product they put out during the season.

If I remember correctly, the MLS holds the rights to the player, not the club, so it is patently obvious why the league would try to keep the player around.

It shouldn’t be too difficult for Donovan to replace Podolski. All he needs to do is sit on the bench and tell reporters how he needs more playing time and confidence from the coach. Then when he plays he needs to try and be disconnected from the game. When he scores against his former club Bayer Leverkusen he needs to bury his face in the grass and not celebrate out of respect for his former club. I think he can do all that.

About Cologne financing a Podolski deal:
Cologne can’t finance Podolski on their own. The idea though is to have the club’s sponsors help out. Podolski’s return to Cologne would trigger a Beckhamesque marketing and merchandising effect which would help recoup the sponsor’s outlay. At least that’s the plan.

A Kap: I agree with you completely on van Buyten. I think he is under used and under appreciated by the masses. The boy has a lot of talent and it’s a shame that he’s not being used. After all, with as badly as Lucio has been playing (with the exception of the last game) he can’t do any worse. ;)

I see Podolski trying to work out any deal he can that will get him back to Cologne…. and it has nothing to do with his lack of playing time. It’s interesting how many people are focused solely on that and not what he’s really said about why he wants to leave.
