Bayern vs Bielefeld: Post match thoughts
By: Angela | December 2nd, 2007I think this might’ve been one of the most bizarre matches I have ever seen between two teams. Some of the calls were just weird. It was all so crazy and the longer the game went on, the stranger the refs seem to have got. The commentators, however, we’re very entertaining. From calling van Buyten the man giant to Oli Kahn being referred to as Queen Mary and Miroslav Klose being a lighthouse… not to mention Offside!Toni* being called a gladiator, the commentators were insanely entertaining today.
There was a gorgeous goal by Franck Ribery. The man is a world class footballer. It’s so amazing to watch him on the pitch. From his footwork, to his charisma, to his ability to make some of the better plays out of nothing, it’s truly a joy to watch this guy play football.
Offside!Toni also scored, but it was taken back because he was ruled to be… offside.
Klose had a nasty collision with Bielefeld’s goalie, Hain, and while he was knocked loose and seemed a bit disoriented they left him in for the final minute of play of the first half. He was replaced at the half and we hope all is okay with him. It clearly wasn’t Klose’s fault, but it looked painful none the less and we hope everything will be okay for him.
Bielefeld held Bayern pretty well and it should’ve been a 2-1 game at least, but no matter what Bielefeld tried, they couldn’t seem to find the net. They had some gorgeous chances, but never were able to follow through.
This game brought about a very aggressive Mark van Bommel again and how he avoided a yellow is beyond me. He got incredibly angry at one point in the second half and was yelling all over the place rather crankily. I was waiting for him to start stomping his feet and throwing a tantrum equivalent to a two year old boy whose just gotten his candy taken away. He’s still got a touch of that aggressiveness that I know and love.
And all in all, you can’t forget the defense that Bayern has. Today they were class. Bielefeld tried their hardest and some of their shots definitely should’ve found their way into the net, but two things happened in Bayern’s favor. Either Bielefeld’s shot’s were off the mark or, in top notch fashion, Oliver Kahn made some incredible saves. Today was just Bayern’s day.
* - Offside!Toni is something that a few of us in the Bayern camp have started to call Luca for his chronic illness of being called offside.

You’re absolutely right about the defense. DeMichelis and Lahm looked good, and for me, Van Buyten was the defensive star today. For as tricky as Hitzfeld’s job can be juggling all of his players/egos, it’s great to see that kind of impact from a player who hasn’t been a first XI player this season. It really underscores the importance of depth. Hopefully Hitzfeld can continue to keep his bench prepared and working hard (Sagnol notwithstanding).
But I am worried about that c-word, complacency. All credit due to Bayern’s opponents this season who have seriously competed against them, but I’m looking for Bayern to have a match where they make a serious statement. A 4-0 type of drubbing that reminds everybody how dominant they can be. A win is a win, but not all wins strike fear in the hearts of opponents, and Bayern could really use one of those kind of games to remind everyone of their class.
All said, I’m happy with the win, and hopefully it will continue going into the transfer window.
And did you see Salihamidzic’s play for Juve yesterday? It’s good to see him playing well, even if it’s not at Munich.

Aaron: I couldn’t agree more with the need for a dominating win. Bayern, to me, have fallen back on their heels because they have had such a remarkable season. They’re still playing, but they’re not playing up to their standard. Some other teams have given them a run for their money, but it seems they’ve fallen into an attitude of as long as we win 1-0 or even hold to a draw that’s okay. Yesterday was an exception. They came out and played aggressive and were played against aggressively. Bielefeld did a stand up job of competing against Bayern.
Agree again, of van Buyten, I am a big fan. I think he is completely under-rated and he always gives his all when he comes on the pitch. Whether he played the match before or hasn’t played a lick since nobody can remember when, one thing is certain, DvB will always give Bayern 110%. I am just glad that his class is recognized by Hitzfeld (who has recently praised him for being a world class player) and that he has recently said he is happy and has no intention of leaving Bayern.Oh how I miss Salihamidzic. I am glad he’s doing well. He is missed by many fans.

Well, the next match is against Duisburg at home. That’s as good an invitation to score four or more goals as Bayern will get.
It seems that after Bayern’s initial lopsided results, the other coaches figured out how to tackle Bayern and at least keep the scoreline down.

I have been looking around to see what the fans at Bielefeld were singing to Ribéry. Do any of you guys know what they were saying? I’m thinking it is pretty bad judging by his post-goal celebration.

L’Gringo: Look back at The Offside’s front page and the Daily Dose post from 12/3. It has a link to an article about what went down. Sounds pretty mild and our boy Franck might have overreacted. A bit of a language barrier issue. As for me, I’m fine with it. We’re not paying the man to be a translator, after all…

Yeah, seems like many an EPL song to me. As long as he can translate goals to Les Bleus, he can do whatever he likes.

That Reuter’s blog post used a very mild translation TBH. The line ‘We’ve got Jonas Kamper. Who needs Ribery?” should at least include a swear word like “Who the f*#k needs Ribery?”. But still, I would expect these type of songs every weekend.
