Pokal Preview
By: Angela | August 1st, 2009Courtesy of loyal reader and commenter, Luke:
In terms of DFB-Pokal 1st round exits, supporters of FC Bayern rarely have much to worry about. Not since calamaties against FV 09 Weinheim in 1990 and TSV Vestenbergsgreuth in 1994 (both clubs have since merged with others) have the Bavarian giants fallen in the 1st round. This year’s 1st round opponent, 6th division SpVgg Neckarelz hardly intimidates. The most entertaining thing about them may be that they have a striker on the roster named Sebastian Frey! So, considering the extreme unlikelihood of a competitive match, one’s attention may be turned to how first round match results influence overall Pokal success.
And while you might expect extreme punishment to be dished out by the eventual champions, the results have been quite different in two of the last 3 years. Here are the first round results for the eventual Pokal winners in the last 5 competitions, eventual winners in bold.
2008-09: 08 Eintracht Nordhorn 3-9 SV Werder Bremen
2007-08: Wacker Burghausen 1-1 FC Bayern Munich (Bayern wins 4-3 on penalties)
2006-07: BV Cloppenburg 0-1 1. FC Nürnberg
2005-06: MSV 1919 Neuruppin 0-4 FC Bayern Munich
2004-05: TSV Völpke 0-6 FC Bayern Munich
So both Bayern and Der Club demonstrated that a shaky start does not necessarily doom a club to an early Pokal exit. And while with Klose available to play, it may look like Bayern can win the match 20-0 (if you consider the 10-0 beatdown of Stuttgarter Kickers), recent history would tell us that a strong but not overwhelming result is most likely.
Thanks Luke!!

Good showing by both sides. I honestly dozed off on the couch at around 20min. The game picked up in the 2nd half.
Some thoughts
Rensing- Gaing confidence…. needs work
Gomez, still not 100% confident, when he does….the floodgates will open.
Tymo should have played.
We played with 3 strikers. Muller, Gomez and Klose, however Later Klose was replaced with Sosa, reverting back to the more conventional formation.Gomez got robbed of a goal by some dipsh&t defender batting the ball away in the box. Gomez got to take the penalty and got his goal. Doppelpack
Baumjohan(sp?) was getting beat up out there.
The score defies (IMHO) that the win wasn’t as comfortable as I would have expected against a really “junior” team.

I still have concerns about defending. That 3-on-2 break against Bayern in the 6th minute was not something that should have been allowed to happen at all. Defending the counter is still suspect IMO.
Neither was van Buyten’s mistake that was not converted into a goal, and what I think was rather slack defending on his part again, and some pathetic keeping by Rensing to allow the Nekar goal. Stuff like that in the Bundesliga will
Otherwise quite a good performance, but obviously one of a team that hasn’t completely gelled together.

Bayern need Ribery back the team lacks somebody to help them switch quickly from defense to offense, today Bayern played defensively against a side that was playing defensively and it lead to a first half where Bayern could only generate half chances because Neckarelz always had plenty of time to set their defense and get players back. there was no player who urged Bayern to attack. In the second van gaal clearly told the team that they were playing too defensive and they needed to attack and with more haste. this lead to the first goal which was the first time where there were more Bayern attackers than they were Neckarelz players defending and Bayern continued to be more urgent in the second half but still lacked an offensive spark.
Gomez will probably not be as prolific a scorer for Bayern as he was for Stuttgart he isn’t really good in the air nor is he a good finisher he usually scores from running through defenses and shooting the ball hard, Van Gaal’s system does not really allow for that, it relies on the strikers scoring off of balls delivered to them. this season will be a test for Gomez and will show if he can become/is a top striker or if he will stagnate and become a one dimensional player like Poldi.

There’s plenty to be dissatisfied with, but in a match of this nature, I’m not going to take much of it to heart. I think matches like this often tell one more about the mental makeup of a team, and I guess that mentality for this match was disinterest.
Van Buyten and Rensing blundering are sort of expected events, no matter who we’re playing and what the situation. It’s just a shame to see the “familiar” Rensing come right back into the picture.
Frankly, I think playing Sosa behind Gomez and Klose would have yielded better attacks early on. A match like this one, if a goal had been scored in the 1st 10 minutes, the floodgates would have opened. But as it is, you just move on to the league schedule, and hope the squad doesn’t have any trouble with motivation against Hoffenheim.

It is like in any sport you have ever played. When you are the huge underdog you get super amped up for the match and play your best, but when you are the favorite that is expected to crush your opponent you play down to their level frequently. We didn’t look that good, but it happens in these games.
Agreed Luke, I’d like to see Sosa at #10 spot against Hoffenheim, unless Ribery is ready which I doubt. Altintop needs to be on the right for sure and as much as I dont like it MvB will be DM. Also, if that wasn’t the final nail in the coffin for the Demi/Van Buyten pairing then i dont know what is. It is consistently awful and can make amateurs look like pros. Please start Badstuder on Saturday.

An article to make you happy, Angela. Also will make Altintop fans happy as Van Gaal stated he will get most of the time on the right… So, between Ribery, Altintop and Van Bommel pretty much being named starters, leaves a lot of competition for the final spot (my guess, Shweinie). The wing backs seem to be set from the fact that Lamm and Braafheid got all the playing time recently. Guessing forwards will be Klose and Gomez, the center defense, who knows, seems Van Gaal is not so sure there. Goaltender: Rensing has done NOTHING to show he deserves another shot at the starting position and I just can’t conceive of them going to the end of transfers with Rensing/Butt the only option. Makes me taste vomit coming up from my stomach to even mention that.

If we don’t get a real goaltender, I’d be for Badstuber and Breno on center defense as we are not going to win anything anyway with crap goaltending, and those 2 kids are supposed to be our future.
