Reloading
By: phil | April 20th, 2011Although the current Bundesliga season is still building to its climax, the real drama continues to take place off the pitch, with FC Bayern making some big moves to prepare for next year. It’s been a while since our last Rumor Round-up, so let’s check the papers and see who might be coming and going.
As always, every transfer possibility we mention here has to have at least some basis in published fact or rumor. The level of seriousness will range from “already certain to happen” to “just a wild story,” but nothing here was made up by me. With that disclaimer, here are some of our pick-ups or pick-up possibilities for the summer.
MANUEL NEUER
We’ve already discussed this several times, but it appears that the Neuer pick-up is now a certainty. ESPN’s soccernet reports that Neuer has turned down an extension with Schalke, making his move to the Allianz Arena just a formality. We went over the mathematical justification for getting Neuer here, if you to read the details, but the basic story is this: he’s one of the best goalies in the world, he’s only 25, and we already know he can play with several of our key guys from the German national team.
Most observers have said this was a done deal for weeks, but even if it wasn’t before, Kraft’s game-costing blunder two weeks ago made it even more of a sure thing. Welcome aboard.
GREGORY VAN DER WIEL
Goal.com reports that the van der Wiel pick-up is also a sure thing. Talk-sport will say only that Bayern is “expected” to make a move.

He comes Robben-approved. So that's something ...
This move is a little less universally agreed-upon. I think vdW is a really solid player. He’s got speed, he’s got good defensive technique, he came up through the respected Ajax system, and he’s only 23. If this deal will (did?) go through, we’re set at the back corners, with Lahm probably moving to LB. This gives us great link-up possibilities on either side, with Lahm-Ribery on the left and van der Wiel-Robben on the right.
Two problems remain, though:
(1) Does this scrap the move for Fabio Coentrao? I would guess so, although the Goal.com article says that Bayern wants them both. Do we really need three different 20-million Euro fullbacks? Or are they planning to move one of them to CB? Speaking of which …
(2) This still leaves our CB spots wide open. Daniel van Buyten has played better recently, but most Bayern fans felt like this was a place we desperately needed reinforcements (see below).
ALEX
Various media outlets have been discussing this for a while, including Inside Futbol. Personally, I don’t think a move for Alex is a great idea – I don’t know that he’d be much of an upgrade over van Buyten or Badstuber, he doesn’t have great quickness, and he’s basically been stuffed onto the bench at Chelsea. Enough papers have mentioned it that I had to include it, but I’d prefer …
BENEDIKT HOWEDES
This is exactly the kind of guy I think would make us tougher at the back. He’s big but not oaf-ish, he’s skilled, he’s young, and it might make Neuer feel more comfortable to have him back there. But if Schalke already loses Neuer, are they going to try to keep Howedes at all costs? Their club is said to have large debts to pay off, but they might try to keep their best young defender, especially if they make European competition next year (which they can do by either winning the Pokal or winning the Champions League). I’m hoping Bayern can snag this guy, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we had to look elsewhere.
DOMENICO CRISCITO
It doesn’t appear that we’re likely to pick up Skinny D. He’s only included because I personally really like him. He can play multiple positions, he can shut down good scorers, and I think he could be the equal (or close) of van der Wiel or Coentrao at a fraction of the price. But if you think this would be a mistake, don’t worry – looks like he’s staying in Italy.
DIMITAR BERBATOV
Kidding.
ARTURO VIDAL
Surprisingly, several articles from this weekend reiterate the Bayern-Vidal link. This had been discussed in February and March, and it’s clear that Heynckes likes him, but I really can’t see the logic of this move. Our CM spot is already taken care of – Bastian obviously fits there, Tymoschuk has been playing well lately, Kroos can play there (although he might be moving up to wing or attacking midfielder), and Gustavo can move up if he has to. Although he’s good, I don’t see the point in buying Vidal unless we can get him at a huge discount.
OTHERS?
There are at least 3 or 4 other big-name guys that have been linked with a move to Bayern, but the Neuer and van der Wiel news is most important, so I’ll cut this off here. Feel free to discuss other guys in the comments – Yann M’Vila? Eden Hazard? Franck Tabanou? It promises to be an interesting summer.
Last thing – we’ve reactivated the Bayern Offside’s twitter account. You can subscribe find us at twitter.com/bayern_offside. This is my first foray into the world of twitter, so bear with me if it takes me a while to accept your twitter-friend-request.
Is that how it works?

I don't really know that much about VDW (except that he's a potential 3,5-star player in FM11), but if Robben is happy working with him and Lahm gets to do his awesome cutting-inside moves playing on the left, then I can't really see a problem. Really, people say Coentrao this and that, but hasn't he said time and time again that he's happy in Benfica? Lahm being first-choice fullback, with VDW/Contento filling out the empty space seems fine enough by me. 20 mil for Coentrao in this setup, not worth it. We need to put that money into (not counting Neuer and VDW) a CB and a striker to replace the (most likely) leaving Klose.

-

That's my concern – what if they pick up Coentrao and vdW? Not only would that be a colossal waste of money, it would basically result in one of the two sitting on the bench or playing out of position.
If its Neuer + van der Wiel + one CB + one versatile forward, that would be perfect for this summer. Hell, maybe they can re-sign Klose to a 1-year deal and just pick up Neuer, van der Wiel and a CB.

-

I would prefer if Bayern bought Coentrao, i have seen him in a couple of matches for Benfica and he is really good. And it would be a great waste of money to buy both VDW and Coentrao. Im hoping for Coentrao and a worldclass CB (hopefully Höwedes) and if the deal with Neuer if done, then maybe just a new striker (if they keep Klose they don't need a new striker)
But do you guys have ideas for some good CB's and strikers? I Would like to hear.

why is there still no CB rumors?

-

Well regarding Neuer Im going to remain reserved until I see or hear HIMSELF say that he is signed and leaving. Especially with ManU waiting in the wings… Ive been disappointed before when things have been said 'its just a formality now' and have gone the other way. I hate ManU so much and even the thought of Neuer going there would make me sick. So my hopes are not getting raised until pen is to paper.
Vidal I just dont see him coming here, this coming season anyway. He is one of B04's best players and they would want a ton of cash for him. And we dont need to spend a ton of cash on a defensive mid.
Not Phunny Phil on Berbatov!!! lol
I completely agree with you Phil on Alex. We dont need another slo-mo… we already have Badstuber and DvB. Both good but dont have speed.
I would LOOOOOOOVE to see Höwedes come here but I just dont see that happening quite yet either. Another one who is one of the clubs best players and he wont be let go unless its for a sum that only other leagues spend (out of their limits).

-

Yeah me too, I liked watching Gomez and Klose play alongside each other, a la 'Die Mannschaft'
We need a good CB and I think Contento might get his form back soon. He's a winger alright but would he make a good CB too ?

-

As far as I know, Contento has only ever played LB or LW. He seems a little small for a CB (5'9″) given the importance of going after balls in the air, etc.
I believe we'll bring in 1 new CB, it's a question of whether it will be a “big name” guy like Alex or a younger, more unheard-of type.

Why do I still feel like Bayern aren't taking the CB situation seriously, even with Maria van Gaal gone?

-

Here's 1 oversight on the benefits of Coentreao + VDW..
Coentreao from what I remember can play on wing positions and can be a natural backup for our wingers. I know Muller fills that role pretty well right now, but it would be great to have a more natural backup..How many times in the past 2 seasons have we felt gimped whenever our wings aren't at full strength?
Although honestly I'd still prefer getting only 1 (VDW or Coentreao) and getting Hazard as the Robbery backup. Unlikely, but I like to dream a liil

-

Coentrao can cover for Ribery as well. Plus we need to rotate, Van der Wiel and Pranjic (or Contento) provides two good-ish backup FBs, so we can always have energy and fitness on the flanks barring serious crisis. If Lahm goes down right now, we're in huge trouble.

I like it. Looks like a club that would compete for multiple trophies.
Only thing I might change is maybe move Muller back to CAM (replacing Kroos), make Kroos first man off the bench, and then move Olic (who I believe is still under contract) or Klose (if we even bring him back – keep in mind he can walk if he gets a better offer) up front next to Gomez.

-

i don'y know. As far as I have seen Schweinsteiger plays better when he has someone next to him to clear up the mess (Tymo, Van Bommel) I think i would set Tymo in next to Schweinsteiger and move Kroos to the bench while moving Müller back behind Gomez.
Then it would look like this:Neuer
V.D.W Höwedes Badstuber Lahm
Schweinsteiger Tymoschuk
Robben Müller Ribery
Gomez

From what I last read on transfermarkt, there's basically no way we're getting Höwedes as well as Neuer. Höwedes has got a contract until 2014. Not that that matters too much, but Schalke wouldn't be able to explain to their fans why they'd have to let two integral figures go to Bayern in one year – plus they won't need the money after making at least CL semis and selling Neuer.
I like what I've seen from Gustavo at CB in recent matches. Don't get me wrong, I'd still like a new CB (Metzelder would actually be my favorite, but same problem as above
). But I can see him and Badstuber working out at CB … if LG can get his mind around playing that position.Out of the guys that sound remotely possible, I guess you left out Jerome Boateng from Man City. He never really got a foot on the ground there but is, when he's fit, a solid RB/CB. Young, quick, sometimes a little over-eager…
If we get van der Wiel, I couldn't really understand getting Coentrao as well (for that asking price, mind you). Sounds like way too much money spend on the guy that gets benched (likely vdW), although Coentrao could backup Ribery / Robben possibly as well, which would be nice with one of them usually out on injurey or red card
Here's “my” starting eleven – not that different from what can be seen in most places
——————Neuer————————
Lahm – Boateng – Gustavo / Badstuber – Coentrao
———-Tymo ——— Schweini————-
Robben———————————–Ribery
—————–Müller————————-
—————–Gomez————————Bench: Goalie (Sattelmaier?), van der Wiel, van Buyten, Contento, Kroos, Pranjic, Olic, Ya Konan
Still needs one more CB for my taste.

See What FcBayern needs. we need 3 defenders because we can not afford what happen to us this season to repeat itself again ever..we need 2CB and 1LB.. Here are my candidates we should get Jerome Boateng, and Per Mertesacker (he has only 1 year contract) or
Dante. then LB we must try and get Fabio Coentrao( he is the best option for us) with this my named defance candidate we will have no problem…then we get rid of (Breno, Van Buyten replace him with Mertesacker) Then for Midfied we need 1 center and 1 winger..Here are my candidate.. we should get Arturo Vidal (recently said he want to join us) we need him because Fcbayern is a big Club we have to have many option in midfied..then for winger we should get Eden Hazard or Marco Reus.. i think Eden Hazard will be a better option for fcbayern because Robben and Ribery are always injury. a club like bayern should not count on only robben and ribery..with Hazard their will be more competition in the wings…with this 2 changes in our midfied we are ok..we need to get rid of ( Andreas Ottl, Hamit Altintop replace with Eden Hazard and Danijel Pranjic, Anatoliy Tymoshchuk replace with Arturo Vidal) Then for a striker we just need to buy 1. Am looking at 3 options ,Nils Petersen from Energie Cottbus (highest goal scorer 2..Bundesliga) , Radamel Falcao or Edinson Cavani…i think fcbayern needs a real striker that can finish in front of goal…we all know that mario gomez is good but lets face the fact he lack speed and finishing and that is what fcbayern needs to go far in any competition… i also think we need to use 2 striker starting from next season….
