van Buyten wins Angela’s heart… and respect.

By: Angela | September 17th, 2008

I would first like to thank loyal reader and most wonderful analytical commenter, Luke for dropping me a line while I was away. I didn’t actually go on strike while Mark was off on suspension or sitting on the bench, even though that might be what some of you thought. ;) I was starting to consider it, but I didn’t. Not because I don’t adore Mark because I do, but there is a certain Belgian that keeps me watching even when Mark isn’t playing. Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that I’m a sport’s junkie and it is about the beautiful game as well. It’s good that all my mental powers have reached Klinsmann and Daniel is finally off the bench, never mind the fact that he’s given reason after reason for Klinsmann to play him. We’ll just say it was all my good vibes and all that. :)

I have been away because I caught a bit of a cold and we had a death in the family. I actually missed the Bayern vs Cologne match, but it is sitting on my DVR waiting to be watched. GolTV decided, for whatever half baked reason, to air that match in the afternoon. Not in the morning like usual. This was the day that I had to travel to the city (I am a rural, rural out in the middle of nowhere rural girl) for a celebration of a wonderful life and person who we had just lost. And since I had to leave at 11am and Gol wasn’t showing the match until 3pm… You can figure out the rest.

Today wasn’t a much better day for me. I was hard at work, but had the match streaming and as though to say welcome back to me, not only did Klinsmann put Mark back in his rightful position as Captain, but once again I found myself rewarded with Daniel starting. It’s no secret that Mark and Daniel are my favorites, but we’ll put the Greek God good looks aside for a moment and be honest here. I know there are some of you that don’t see it and that’s okay, we’re all adults here and we’re all entitled to our own opinions, but this is why I continually say that Daniel should not be sitting on the bench.

Fifteen minutes into the game, Schweini launched a free kick that was found in the air by van Buyten and he headed it home. I was SO pleased to see him score. All his hard work is paying off. And Klinsmann better take notice. He has earned my respect for so many different reasons. Last season when he was getting next to no playing time, he came into every game he could playing all out. There was never a complaint about being on the bench. There was never any slack in is game because he wasn’t getting to play regularly or a full 90 minutes. There was just Daniel. Stepping onto the pitch and always giving Bayern 110%.

Then the rumors started and I wanted to go into hiding. The rumors of his leaving Bayern. I did not want him to go, but I wouldn’t have blamed him for leaving either. No one wants to spend their career sitting on the bench. But, he did what any self-respecting player would do. He trained and he worked hard. He gave his heart and soul every opportunity that he got. Unlike certain players who take it upon themselves to complain every chance they get and continue to have poor outing after poor outing without trying to better themselves, Daniel actually strives to be the best that he can be and it shows in each and every game. There is something so completely worthy of respect when a player is unhappy with his role but instead of running his mouth, he continues to perform and continues to try to better himself. Working harder and harder until it gets noticed. His best effort has finally paid off with a goal. And my heart, which I’m sure he’s just super thrilled about and will finally have a good night’s sleep. ;)

Today, he is my hero. And it was a very welcome change from all of the happenings in my life lately. Other than Daniel’s goal today, there wasn’t much else worth looking at. The Luvin fellow from Steaua Bucharest needed a little more than a yellow. The majority of the injuries to Bayern came from him. Miro was hurt and Podolski came on for him at the half. No yellows for the Bommer… the new nickname for Mark. It’s curious really. I still think I’m right in saying that the Bundesliga refs are just too quick to book him. How can the same person play the same style of play at the National level and not get booked yet he breathes funny or looks in the wrong direction in the Bundesliga and he’s booked. Curious.

Anyways, I digress. Overall, the play was better again. The team seems to be starting to gel and Klinsmann’s plans are coming into view. I expect that they’ll have a good run in the CL and I hope that the line that played today will continue to play. AND if this didn’t put an exclamation point on the ability of van Buyten then I’ve got a pen and paper ready to start a petition to Klinsmann. One American girl takes on the world for her boys. :)

ok… This was not the first time van Buyten scored for Bayern in the champions league and it didn’t cement him in the Bayern hierarchy them as this recent goal wont cement him in it now. the truth remains that he is still Bayern’s most expendable defender and his future at Bayern will greatly depend on how player values shape up in the transfer market, either witch way eventually Breno will take his place in Bayern defensive pecking order.

Anyway Bayern were not at all impressive in Romania yesterday they seriously lacked creativity and seemed to pass the ball around aimlessly without anybody cutting into to the box or coming off the wing to get a shot on goal. Steaua almost drew that game… The good news is Ribery is coming back and and he will definitely bring lots of creativity and stop Bayern from playing so mechanical. hopefully he can come back against Werder and get a game in and be back to his old self against Lyon because Bayern are have serious problems creating scoring opportunities.

First off Angela, thank you for the kind words. You have my condolences for your loss, and wishes for a speedy recovery too!

I have to admit I was stuck with a matchcast for yesterday and I would not have graded Bayern poorly based on that…then I saw the extended highlights. I will say this, Toni is converting less of his solid chances right now(also true in Köln). Since Klosw never has any, that becomes a problem. I think Schweini was pretty solid-didn’t see all the dead ball plays, but even getting a goal from a Schweini set piece is progress. I’m willing to grant some leeway considering it was bad conditions on a Romanian pitch, but the defending was very sloppy particularly Lucio. Bayern were fortunate, John’s right on that one.

Van Buyten only seems to realize he’s 6′4″ in CL matches! I’m glad to see him add an offensive threat, but my biggest concern is that he’s just too slow. No amount of goals is going to justify a fatally slow defender in the long term. (sorry Angela!)

Thanks Luke. :) I’m working on it!

You don’t have to apologize. There is a difference in the way you say things and the constant badgering that sometimes goes on for everything that I post.

I don’t know if I’d say he’s slow as much as there is no confidence when it’s just he and Lucio. Demichelis brings out a lot of stability for him and everyone. I’ve seen him push forward and be there when needed. He just has to know he can rely on his mates.

Angela: Rest assured, I would be happy to be as optimistic with DVB as you are, I’m just can’t find a reason to be–but always hoping I do!

To all the Americans here relying on GOLTV for their Bundesliga coverage: Their schedule has Bayern vs Bremen being shown on 2 hour delay (with no live match beforehand either?!?!!!) They did the same last week with Dortmund-Schalke, so if this is their new policy, and they can’t show the biggest matches live, I think we ought to step up the protest emails. They ought to know that viewers like us who are generally waking up abnormally early to watch German soccer on a Saturday morning (a rare enough breed) will not be tuning in their coverage if they can’t put it on live. I know exactly what online feed I’ll be looking for Saturday morning because of this nonsense. It’s a shame, because GOL is doing what it can to raise the profile of the Bundesliga in this country generally, and all I can think is that they think they’ll reach a bigger audience 2 hours later. Oh, by the way they are showing the Sunday Wolfsburg-Hamburg match live, apparently due to Wolfsburg huge international following. (with all apologies to the Wolfsburg Offside)

Luke: While writing that protest e-mail to GolTV, please include a short reminder, that it’s not Wolfsburg vs Hamburger but Hamburg.

Jan: Let’s see if they continue using the graphic “Karlsruher FC” with the “KSC” logo right next to it this season. Actually let’s not, I don’t have much use for watching KSC.

Luke: Hang out long enough with me… I’ll have you waving the DVB flag in no time. ;) I promise I could convert just about anyone. I can be convincing when I need to be, though I think that most days Daniel speaks for himself… I guess I understand though… I just can’t get behind Lucio no matter how many people say he’s awesome.

I hate that they’re showing it later. I get up early to watch live and I don’t mind that because its live. I want to see it when it’s going. Not avoiding the net at all costs so I don’t see the result before it’s even aired! I think you’re right, we should protest. I think we should collaborate…

Jan: Thank you. I appreciate it.

    Sorry for your loss Angela.

Wish I could have seen the game, Comcast does not have ESPN 360 and since Bayern isn’t in the EPL, ESPN won’t show it. Also the German channels are shown on Comcast in Cape Coral, right across the river from me, but not here in Ft. Myers. Ahhhh I digress.

DVB has had many good games for Bayern, but I really can’t see him being in the future plans with the personnel they have. Sorry to burst your bubble Angela, but I really don’t see him there after the winter transfer season, which is not a good thing, they could use the depth he provides.

And if you meant Poldi on the whines but doesn’t perform, you so obviously missed the Cologne game where they were a totally different team once he entered the game. I know I’ll have a lot of haters for this remark, but Poldi is better than Klose now and with Klose 31 and near the end of his career and Poldi 23, not even in his prime yet… Well you know who I think they should be keeping happy and it’s not the one who has lost his scoring touch in the Bundesliga,

Roger: Thanks for the condolences. I seen the Cologne match. Just a couple days later than when it was on. And while I agree that he can have good performances, I think he is mediocre most of the time. The problem that I have with Podolski is that he plays well when he wants to, but doesn’t always appear to want to. And the goal that he scored against Cologne was so obviously not what he wanted. He just had nowhere else to put the ball and would’ve been criticized worse than he already is if he had missed. And, it’s not that I would like to see him gone either. He could be a great asset to Bayern, but I have a huge problem with any team forcing any player to stay on when they don’t want to. It doesn’t make them want to perform to their best ability for you.

As for DVB, He is happy, Klinsmann is happy with him. He continues to improve. We’ll just have to see what happens. You’re not bursting a bubble Roger… it would take a lot more than that. I still wave my DVB flag loud and proud. ;)

Klose… I’m hoping is just going through a slump. He performed so well in the last Germany match. Call me optimistic but I hope it will be just a matter of time before he finds his footing in the Bundesliga as well.

I just hope that Klose is G2G for the Bremen game.

Rensing, he’s doing very well (even if luck is on his side). He had some good saves.

MVB capainted well and kept his cool, even after Klose was checked.

Defense was very good….in the first half, as was the Offense. However some of them started to look a little lethargic in the 2nd half. Borovski coming in for Ze, I think took some of the momentum out of the game.

Overall things are going well for the team and I am sure that they will continue to Gel.

My condolences for your family loss. I figured you were on vacation.

Oh no! It looks as if Ribery is going to be out even longer! He’ll miss the Bremen game and he’s questionable for the DFB Cup game against Nuremburg as well.

    Angela:
I wrote my protest to GOL last night–I think there’s more noise in numbers, so I encourage you to do the same in your own special way.

Looking forward to Bremen: The players to watch are Lahm, Ze Roberto and Podolski–this is especially true if both Frings and Fritz are unable to go, as they are both dealing with injury (apparently the dreaded Grippe for Fritz). I look for Bayern’s attacks to come pushing into Bremen’s weakened right side time and again. This is a big opportunity for Podolski, and I for one expect him to seize it. Maybe last week he got his head around closing the “home” chapter of his career, and will finally get down to business. Frankly I don’t think Ribery was going to contribute much to this match anyway, except maybe an 85th minute appearance. We can’t afford to let Bremen mentally turn it around by taking a point here–and I think Klinsmann knows it as well.

jocamryn: Thanks for the condolences. I would’ve rather have been on vacation. :) Ribery is not playing and it’s unlikely that Klose will. It will be a chance for Podolski to give an effort to show the he should be started, but I’m not sure it will come through. We’ll have to see.

Luke: I was planning on it. I just meant that we should all organize together and keep their inboxes flooded.
