Bayern 3 - 3 Getafe; Second Leg

By: Angela | April 10th, 2008

Bayern's Luca ToniBayern took on Getafe in the second leg of the UEFA cup match. Right away, twenty seconds in Klose set up a great opportunity for Toni, but he couldn’t carry it through. Two minutes in Contra took a shot but it sailed high and went over the to of the bar so Kahn didn’t have much to do with that one. Six minutes in, received a red card and Getafe were seen a man down. Seven minutes in, Ribery missed a shot, but Toni put it in. It was disallowed due to a hand ball though. Talk about referee’s not seeing things… In the first half, somewhere around 15 minutes or so, Mark took a hard hit from behind, not even having posession of the ball, and they didn’t call that at all. If it had been Mark doing the knocking down, he’d have gotten a red for sure. The play slowed down a bit by both teams shortly after the sending off. Bayern carried the most possession, but failed to capitalize on it.

Ribery accidently gave a bloody nose today. I’m still unclear what happened because as many times as I’ve seen the replay, I haven’ seen where he really touched the other player aside from his shirt. Ribery had a great corner delivery at 31 minutes and Demichelis should’ve been able to capitalize on it, but he couldn’t put it home. Approximately two minutes later, Lell had a completely open net and failed to put that one home. I won’t discuss how much I dislike him anyways.

I realize that I’m a bit bias on the subject but if you watch this game, you will see just how valuable van Bommel is to Bayern. Around the 40 minute mark, Ribery gets the ball taken away from him, but Mark does a brilliant job breaking up the play and taking possession back to Bayern.

Just before half time Contra scored a goal to put Getafe ahead. Two minutes of time was added on and we went to the break with Getafe one up on Bayern. The first half possession was all about Bayern. They controlled the ball 65% of the time compared to Getafe’s 34%. Bayern won in shots as well with 7 to 4. Bayern carried 217 accurate passes and 47 bad passes.

The first half was somewhat bad for Bayern. They were just kind of there. I wasn’t at all impressed with their form or the way they were playing. The defending was lax. They weren’t all that aggressive. I do have to say, I much prefer to watch my games on Gol. The announcers are far better.

The start of the second half brought on the first change. Ottmar Hitzfeld removed Lell and started Jansen in his place. Miro has been hanging out with his buddy Toni a little too much because he got called for offside quite a few times today. I thought that only Toni had mastered that art, but evidently Miro felt left out. At around 49 minutes we had another goal that was taken away. Again. So now that’s two that were taken away in this match. Mark has put some really good shots through today, but it doesn’t seem to matter what any of them do. Either the shot doesn’t find the net or when it does the goal is disallowed. Bad luck Bayern.

At 62 minutes Demichelis made a beautiful cross and Miro missed the shot. He was quite angry at himself as well. 63 minutes saw another switch for Bayern and Schweinsteiger came off for Sosa. There was a heart stopping moment for all Bayern fans when Getafe had a one on one opportunity against Kahn and it was sure to be the 2-0 for Getafe, but fortunately for all of us Bayern fans, the Getafe player lost his footing and slipped so Kahn was able to get the ball and get it out. At 69 minutes Sosa had a good shot, but it just hit the post and went out.

74 minutes saw the switch of Ze Roberto for Lukas Podolski. Good defending by Jansen in this section of the game. Lukas sort of jumped on someone’s shoulder… not intentionally I don’t think, but the boy got some air. Good attempt by Podolski at 79 minutes. It warranted them a corner. And after that, Bayern pretty much fell apart. Our redeeming factor was once again the amazing Franck Ribery who scored the equalizer at 89 minutes.

Two fifteen minute periods were added on. Right away, Getafe came out and scored. And this is part of the reason why I just can’t see Lucio’s worth to this team. I know there are fans out there, and believe me I wish I could see it, but I just can’t. Toni got a yellow card and will miss the next match.

The announcers were so awesome. Between calling Lahm - Lamb, Klose - Clothes and the best yet, Micho as Mitcho… they were so amusing. I still terribly missed the Gol announcers. They are so much more fired up and make the game much more interesting. Podolski got a yellow and I’m not entirely sure what for… Jansen made the foul, but Podolski got the yellow.

Suddenly the match got very intense and a lot of great game playing happened. Luca Toni came out and saved our asses by getting a hattrick, which should’ve been 5 goals really but his initial two were disallowed. What an intense ending to a match. I was on the edge of my seat near the end. Crazy. Kahn coming out of his net to participate was something that I’ve never seen before, but that was great. And also after Toni scored the tying goal, the emotional shot of a crying Kahn was just overwhelming. Demichelis giving a little chat to Pato was great. A happy, winning Bayern is a loving Bayern. Bayern win on aggregate and therefore advance. All in all, it was the Luca Toni show for Bayern.

And lastly, I want to know what product Luca Toni uses for his hair. It’s freakin’ gorgeous.

Below is a break down of yellow cards as they were awarded and goals.
// (44′) Contra, (89′) Ribery, (91′) Casquero, (93′) Braulio, (115′) Toni, (120′) Pato
// (21′) C. Lell, (36′) P. Lahm, (104′) L. Toni, (117′) L. Podolski

    It was crazy. I have no idea how we managed to win that one.

    Gott Ist Ein Muenchner.

    Well, though I don’t think we deserved to win that one, considering we were up a man for like 115 minutes, but hell I will take it. Toni is worth his weight in goal. Could he be more clutch? Top 5 strikers in the world, hands down!!
    Gotta give Getafe and Michael Laudrup who I have always admired a lot of respect and credit. It is not surprising he is rumoured for a job with a big club.

    MEIN GOTT!!!! Where to start and where to end..quite simply, it is our year. That is what one must conclude. I guess this one was for those who felt the Belgrade match wasn’t quite enough of a miracle. Tell me you weren’t mentally constructing Klinsmann’s new back line from the 93rd to 115th min? Actually, I tried to remind myself “Ball is rund! Ball ist rund!” for much of that part of the match, and I really did think we still had a chance if we added a 2nd in the first half of extra time. But when that passed, I was slouched. It would have been quite ironic to lose the match 1-0 in basically a role-reversal of last Saturday’s match. I felt there were long periods where Bayern simply couldn’t figure out what to do. I declared to my friend at 80′ “That’s really it. I mean they have no ideas left.” Of the substitutes, I would have to say that Sosa was the only one who contributed anything. The 2nd Getafe goal was world-class–we were too far off the ball, but you don’t really defend goals like that. The 3rd validated everything Angela has ever said about Lucio, and so I’ll give up ever trying to defend him. But all the semi-analysis is really moot, this match was sort of a cosmic event, maybe some kind of karmic refund for 99′. It’s why the rest of Deutschland hates Bayern, and it’s why we are Bayern. Having seen a lot more of Zenit than most, I think it’s a good matchup for Bayern. But it will be hard to think about that for a while. We’ve got 2 more matches in the next 6 days! And Angela–can you imagine if Ray Hudson was calling the end of that match on GOL? I think it would have automatically triggered the emergency alert system..

    Aw Luke.. I’m sorry that I had to give validation to everything I’ve said about Lucio, but now you see where I am coming from ;) I agree, of the substitutes, Sosa is the only one that brought anything o the pitch. I thought we had a chance until near the end of the second half myself. I told a friend of mine ‘well that’s it, we’ve lost this one.’ And then Franck equalized and I thought oh God, this is it.. we’re back in. And in extra time when they scored so quickly.. twice… I thought for certain we were done for. But then here comes Toni again, never giving up. Who would’ve thought it? I really didn’t think that Bayern played better than Getafe. Somehow they just unraveled their concentration at the end and I’m sure that has to do with being tired. Hudson would’ve brought the house down on GOL. I would’ve been even more on the edge of my seat with his commentating. I miss that when I have to watch on a different channel. He is awesome.

    Sid: First of all, Angela never said what you accused her of saying about Getafe. Second of all, of course she’s a bit biased since this is a Bayern blog! So relax a bit before firing off absurd reactionary garbage, ok?

    As for the game, I was utterly speechless for about twenty minutes after it ended. That game probably took five years off my life. We played about as wasteful a brand of ball as you could imagine, while Getafe taught us a thing or two about taking the chances that come to you. After all, they scored three goals with 10 men against what is normally a proud, stout defense.

    I’d also like to do a bit of Lucio defending (not for the first time, of course) and say that yes, he mucked up the clearance on the third goal, but just watch how every other defender was standing still when that goal was scored. The missed clearance was regrettable, but Lahm and Jansen standing still (after Demichelis got beat) was inexcusable.

    But then we somehow finally started making regular chances with our unimaginative passing and possession, and we dominated the extra time the way that we should have. I’m hoping that this can be the type of victory that catalyzes a strong finish to the season. The boys certainly looked like they were playing for each other at the end, and that’s a great sign given the ego trips that they’ve been guilty of recently.

    And I’m glad Ray Hudson wasn’t announcing that one, simply because if he were it would have been the end of him, and he’s much too young to be taken from us.

    That was one of the greatest ever games football has produced. It will not be remembered for the beauty of the game but for - the emotions involved, excitement, Getafe’s fighting spirit, and Bayern’s perseverence.What a heartbreaker for Getafe and what a win for Bayern. Bayern sure have a lot of work to do..Coach and the team will have to think about it.

    Sid: I never said Getafe played like shit. There is nothing in this blog that said Getafe played badly.

    Aaron, thanks for coming to my defence. I’m not sure that I said anywhere that Getafe played like shit. I am still unsure how Bayern managed to win this one because Getafe played their hearts out a man down from pretty much the beginning of the game. Of course I am biased, it’s why I write the Bayern offside, not another one. However, I didn’t say anywhere that Getafe played bad. Anyways, thanks for defending my honor. You’re my hero ;)

    Oh, Demichelis didn’t have his best game either. It was really a beautiful disaster for much of Bayern…. You won’t get an argument from me on that one. And yeah, Hudson would’ve been on his last breath during that one, that’s for sure. He probably would’ve gave all of us heart attack’s too.

    Jan: Do you think he, as well as all of us, could handle a match like that? I’d probably be even more exhausted if he’d announced.

    I won’t say that Getafe played badly, but they sure play-acted badly! How about the guy with the quadruple-roll after light contact? I suggest they immediately apply for entry into the Serie A, as they made the Luca Toni look like Ben Stein.

    It’s taken days for me to digest this game. I could only duck in to the local bar for the first half, but I was disappointed with what I saw. I was at work watching the live ticker and I couldn’t believe what I saw. Thank god for Luca Toni and Ribery in the second half– especially Toni’s fire. I watched the highlights this weekend and when Toni followed his 115 minute ball into the net, grabbed it, ran back to the center and yelled at his teammates to hurry up and get into position for the restart… I think I forgave Italy for beating Germany in the World Cup.

    Jan — I would totally sign that petition.

    Unbelievable result. I wonder if the game is available for download somewhere — Kahn was right when he said that in 10 years, we won’t be talking about Real or United, we’ll be talking about Getafe… They were amazing — to hold us off for 120 minutes, a man down for most of that… Impressive. Just… wow.
