Bayern Munich 1 - 1 Zenit St. Petersburg

By: Angela | April 24th, 2008

Miro Klose is sadI wasn’t able to watch Thursday’s DFB Pokal match so in order to make up for it, I watched this game twice. Once streaming on-line with Chinese commentary which gave me a massive headache since I didn’t understand them and then again when it was aired on Fox Soccer Channel in English. It’s pretty obvious that our goal scoring comes from Luca Toni and we have to find and create a lot more chances when he’s missing otherwise we fall short. And Toni doesn’t appear to enjoy sitting in the stands at all.

We all know where I stand on my love for this team, my love for certain players and my discontent with other players. I would just like to start out by saying that my Lucio Love (read with a very sarcastic tone) is in full swing today. The more I watch him play (read as screw-up) the more I am convinced that we should pay Barca to take him away from us. As hard as I have tried, I seriously can’t find his worth to this team. I would’ve switched him out that instant if it weren’t for the fact that our reserves were on low due to Kahn being unexpectedly injured. For the love of all things Football and Bayern someone PLEASE take him off our hands. Put Daniel van Buyten on the pitch NOW. He’s hungry, he’s motivated and he’s proven himself in the last few games; going so far as to score a goal…and not an own goal I might add. He needs to be rewarded for his efforts and Lucio needs to be reminded that it’s not okay to be a f*** up. Yes, I’m annoyed.

I didn’t know a thing about Zenit before this match, but I am impressed. They played with heart, hunger and a desire to bring Bayern down. Granted, Bayern maintained most possession, but that doesn’t mean they lacked effort. They certainly put forth a lot of effort and had some pretty good chances, even when they got passed Rensing they were thwarted by our defense or by Roberto. I cringed every single time Mark got tackled. I was waiting for him to go face first and injure his nose further than it already is. Especially since he opted to play without a face guard. No yellows for our side. That’s a first isn’t it? I mean, not even Mark got a yellow today. Zenit racked up four.

I was a little unsure of the trade of Schweini for Lell. Schweini put forth a good effort today and I just couldn’t see where they swap was necessary or why it needed to be done. Kahn picked up an injury though he wasn’t traded right away. He tried to stick it out, but you could see he wasn’t comfortable so eventually Rensing came in for him.

If we are going to win this we are going to have to work much harder in the second leg away to Zenit. Fortunately we will have Luca Toni back for that match as he was missed today. I’m starting to think we should change the name from FC Hollywood to FC Toniwood… or FC Lucawood… something in his honor. ;)

Random notes: Lukas Podolski cut his hair and I don’t like it. Ze Roberto’s hair is growing out and I hope we’ll see the old style back soon.

Below is a break down of yellow cards and goals as they were awarded.
// (18′) Ribery, (60′) F.d.S. Lucio (own goal)
// (17′) F. Ricksen, (28′) V. Fayzulin, (75′) R. Sirl, (79′) A. Arshavin

It will certainly help to have 3 Zenit players suspended going to St. Petersburg, but I expect that to be a heavily watered ugly pitch. It’s going to be tough. I don’t think any of us Bayern fans should be surprised, this is what we’ve seen time and again this season, defenders making bone-headed errors, not marking men, not getting in people’s faces. Look at the contrast in this match when the ball came into the box. Especially in the 2nd half, Zenit were allowed crucial passes, but there was always someone in the Bayern players’ faces. Zenit has mainly played in counter-attacking formations for this entire tournament, but they’ve either been way ahead or way behind in 2nd legs, so it will be interesting to see how they come out. I expect that we’ll be pretty poor on Sunday as well, but all will be forgiven if we can figure out how to come out of St. Petersburg in one piece.

    My thoughts:
The CL/UC semis in general: Disappointing.
Bayern’s result: Disappointing. Bayern need to score and Zenit can enjoy playing their preferred counter attacking football at home. Without an early Bayern goal, the second leg will be either very nerve-wrecking or over pretty quickly.
Bayern’s UC campaign: A few highlights coupled with a lot of mediocrity. Whether they get the triple or not, it’s time Klinsmann injects a new spirit and mentality into this team.
Bayern’s defence: it’s shocking to see how often Bayern’s back-line looks completely disorganised during a match.
Rensing: Doesn’t look confident at the moment and I hope Kahn is back in time for the re-match. He is not advertising himself as Bayern’s future #1.
Klose: when in form Klose’s game looks elegant and deadly. At the moment it’s just lethargic and helpless. I would probably pick Toni-Podolski for the second leg.
Zenit: Maybe those three suspended players are crucial to Zenit’s game.

    Bayern should kick it like:
Leverkusen’s B-Squad who beat Zenit 1-0 in Russia.
Nuremberg who drew Zenit 2-2 in Russia during the group stage.
Both results would be enough for the final.

    The upcoming game against Stuttgart:
Hitzfeld should rotate and rest his starting XI for the second leg.

Jan - true that Leverkusen beat Zenit 1-0, but they were so far behind that Zenit knew they could lose one or two and be fine. Not so this time. That second leg should be a great one.

I think I’m in the minority Jan… I would take a Klose/Toni partnering every single time over Podolski starting at this point. He is far too inaccurate, distracted and inconsistent to warrant starting. I do hope that Klinsmann can turn things around because Bayern is a shell of its former self and something has to be done.

Ian: I’m aware that the game is obviously going to be very different. It’s just a motivational thing for Hitzfeld - who’s an avid reader of this blog - that two Bundesliga sides were already successful in Russia and scored crucial away goals.:-)

LOL Jan! If Hitzfeld were an avid reader, he’d do us all a favor and sit Lucio out for once!

Angela: I guess you are right about Podolski. But being inaccurate, distracted and inconsistent is still better than an out-of form Klose. An out of form Klose is like he’s not even on the pitch. But Hitzfeld might indeed trust his Getafe line-up with Kloni upfront.

Something else I noticed (also in the Getafe match): Ribery receives very little help from his team mates. It’s up to him to take on one, two, three or even four defenders and the other Bayern players basically just sit back and wait whether he gets through or not. He’s very often on his own and this is a waste as well.

I trust Klose more on the pitch than I do Podolski as of late. It’s sad because Podolski use to be one of my favorite players, but as of late I’ve felt like we’d be better off without him. He needs game practice and he’s just not going to get it at Bayern and he deserves more of an opportunity than being a bench decoration.

Ribery: Every one thinks he will get through with or without their help. He does most times, but that’s no reason to let him fend it out for himself.

    Picking out a couple points:

Yeah, Rensing definitely looks like he’s lacking confidence. I can’t figure it out, because he’s played well in big games in the past, CL matches against Milan come to mind. It’s not like he hasn’t had those experiences. The rumors about Schwarzer sound good to me–that’s about the type of guy they need behind Rensing next season, H-J Butt was another I was thinking of.

Did anyone for Bayern even get their foot on a cross today? There are too many matches where there is no one moving off the ball for Bayern.

Despite what Uli Hoeness has to say about what strikers are paid for, I don’t really mind when Klose fails to score but plays creatively. But, he created nothing today. Nevertheless, I would favor him over Podolski in the 2nd leg, because I think it will be a very static match, the worst possible situation for Podolski.

Luke I agree wholeheartedly. The thing we lacked today as well, with Toni gone, is our air assault. van Buyten is excellent in the air. Without Toni we needed all effort and evidently everyone felt it was okay to just skate through. We are in for a good row at Zenit.

    2nd leg team:
Kahn, Lahm, van Buyten, Demichelis, Jansen, Schweinsteiger, Van Bommel, Ze Roberto, Ribery, Toni, Klose.

I hope Van Buyten plays against Stuttgart to prove himself better than Lucio at the moment. Klose over Podolski. I’d prefer an assisting Klose than a wide-shooting Poldi.

Looks like the whole Podolski-Klose argument is moot now. Nose broken in 3 places requiring surgery doesn’t sound like something you can come back from in 6 days.

schweinsteiger had a good game, and i think he was just tired, at one point a close up showed him just pouring sweat. i think the point of subbing in lell was to allow schweinsteiger to come out knowing that kroos could be brought on for attacking pressure if the game didn’t break. then lell could take over in defense for lahm, or whomever. hitzfeld’s been having an uphill battle trying to force his defenders to be midfielders (demichaelis drama, sagnol in midfield).

Klose is definitely out for the match on Sunday. The next one is an uncertainty, but he’ll likely miss out as well. I think he just didn’t want Mark being the only one with a broken nose…. ;) Talk about Team Dedication.

munichsoul I love your line up, but Klose will likely be out due to the injury. Kahn is also facing an injury, but we’ll see how he fares by then.

I would love to see van Buyten get a shot. I personally think Lucio is a big screw up and an own goal is definitely deserving of bench time in my opinion…
