Phil: The CL is going to be tough, but I have faith that we'll put up a fight. I don't know that we'll win it, but I think we'll make a good effort. It's no secret here that van Bommel is my favorite Bayern player, but that isn't why I think he'd be a good Captain. There are many reasons why I think he should be the one to lead the team. He is a natural leader. Even if everyone else in the league hates him, his teammates have a huge respect for him. He motivates them, he pushes them to be better players and he takes them in when no else will. Miroslav Klose stated that Mark was the first one to welcome him and make him feel a part of the Bayern team. Now they're good friends. He texted all of his teammates during the Euro's to wish them luck and see how they were doing. He is in contact with them just as much on the pitch as he is off. And when Oli Kahn pulled a disappearing act at the Team Christmas Party, Mark stepped in and made an impromptu speech in his absence. He is meant to lead the team with or without the C on his arm.

It's also no secret that I am not a fan of Lucio. I think he screws up more than he does anything good. I would be very sad to see him given the C.

Ali: I agree with Luke on Miro. He is a great player and I have a great deal of respect for him and they way he handles himself off the pitch, but I don't know if he'd be able to handle Bayern as Captain just yet. He could prove us all wrong though who knows. :)

Ali: I think the main argument against Klose is that he's not very fiery. I mean, it's sort of a good thing to have a superstar who is quiet and boring. We don't hear more about his off the field antics than his goals, and I like that. But I'm not sure that's the kind of guy who rallies his teammates in a tough spot, for example.

Also, I really dont think Lahm would make a good captain. Dont get me wrong, He's an AMAZING player, but he really isnt experienced enough, and doesnt have leadership characteristics.
How come no one has given Klose a thought? He's experienced enough, plays well, and seems to get along with everyone.

I'm definitely glad that Bastian is staying. He was great in the Euros, and he made me feel very lucky since he suddenly started scoring ( Portugal) after the Schweinsteiger jersey I had bought arrived :)))
Now I gotta wait for the new kits for Bayern to get a number 31!
Lets just hope that he does just as good in Champions League. I think he will.

I don't think Lahm nor Demichelis have the qualities necessary for a captain, and both of them have had some awkward moments with the team over the last few months -- though, to his credit, Demichelis has said he is a son of the club. Lucio is the captain of the Brazilian national team, which is quite something, but he's also made some want-away noises. Van Bommel, OTOH, has said he could imagine finishing his career at Bayern. Though hot-headed, I think he's got the right attitude and natural leadership charisma to be captain. I also think Klose could be in contention, but maybe he'd be better suited to a vice-captain role.

Angela: Van Bommel is a good player but I recall that about 2 months ago, Bayern was trying to replace him. Gattuso was to be the replacement, when he refused to come, they set their sights on Cristiano Zanetti. Now it looks like we might not get a major midfield signing so Van Bommel comes back in the picture. Lahm might not be ready but he's from bayern whereas Van Bommel just came two years ago. A year ago, sagnol was the favorite to take the armband but, he didn't play much. And besides there are a few players who would be better suited to be the captain. Toni would be good but, he says that he wants to go back to italy in 2-3 years, sagnol would be a good choice, lucio would be good but he's starting to loose his concentration (ie. the getaffe match). Nevertheless, you made some very good points about Lahm being to quiet but a leader can lead by example and charisma. I do hope they make a major signing though or else the champion's league is gonna be tough.

Phil: I disagree on van Bommel being easily replaced and I also disagree with Lahm being the choice. In my opinion, Lahm is nowhere near being ready to Captain a team. He possesses no leadership skills on the pitch. He's far too quiet and reserved. Bayern Captain's have been anything but reserved. Mark, however, is consistently the one that pulls the team back together. He is the one that continually steps up and takes care of the team. While he may have some temper issues, last season was a vast improvement and while his tactics may not always be right, he does motivate the team. Last season, when van Bommel wasn't in the lineup, midfield was a mess. We have the addition of Borowski which might help with that matter, but last season, when he was missing we definitely hurt from it. More goals were scored and more games were lost when he was out of the game than when he was in. He is an asset to Bayern.

Luke: I've seen a photo that is supposed to be "leaked" and it looks like they put the four stars in a row rather than that weird star on top. We'll have to see soon enough. I look forward to another season of hanging out here at the offside with you.

Though there might be something to Phil's comment about Klinsmann's innovation-focused mentality carrying over to the selection of a captain. But it's just nonsense to say "You can't have a captain who cannot keep his cool on the pitch," especially from a Bayern perspective. After all, our captains over the last 10 years have been those pillars of emotional control Oliver Kahn and Stefan Effenberg! I suppose you could debate whether that's been a detriment, but I don't think it's much of a debate.

On another topic, the FCB newsletter states that the new away and CL jerseys will be available in the online store on Tuesday! No word yet if you can get a Butt jersey with an arrow pointing downward. Somehow I don't think they're going to top last year's merchandising frenzy though.

Its pretty clear that Lahm will be the captain. Klingsman is an inovator who likes young players. Van bommel is just to old and not skilled enough to be the captain. Plus there is the issue of his discipline. You can't have a captain who cannot keep his cool on the pitch. Van Bommel has shown us that he cannot control his emotions. A notable example was the ban that he received for making insulting gestures towards the crowd in Mardrid during the CL match against Real. I also remember him getting a red card last season. Lahm on the other hand has no disciplinary record. In conclusion if you look at both players, Van Bommel is expendable, he can easily be replaced but Lahm is on of the very best leftbacks in Europe certainly top 3. Plus, making Lahm the captain will ensure that her will not leave the club in the future.
