Champions League & Goal Keepers
By: Angela | April 14th, 2009I haven’t yet had a chance to watch the game from today, but I DVR’d it and will watch. I already know how it turned out because between meetings I was checking live score. My question to you readers is what did you think of overall game play? I’ll offer up my comments after I have a chance to watch the match.
On a different subject, Klinsmann has decided that Butt will be the main goal keeper for the remainder of the season and not Rensing. I’m hearing murmurs that Klinsmann never wanted to give Rensing the number one spot because he thought he was too unstable, but was pressured by Uli Hoeness and other upper management because they promised Rensing his time would come once Kahn was gone. Thoughts?

Here are my thoughts:
- Sosa had a great start to the game. That cross to Toni should have been finished off. He hustled and harried Barca, although he faded towards the end, that can be said about Bayern as well.
- Toni miffed an easy header, that he possibly would have finished off last season. Something’s up with him, he’s just not finishing consistently this season.
- Ribery was the catalyst, and he dribbled like one would expect him to, but lacked that one killer pass. His goal, was an example in patience and intelligence.
- The central D made some key stops, but the shakiness was evident every time someone was poised to make a run. A lot of the challenges seemed last-ditch.
- I wish Lahm was fit for the first leg.
- Lell moved forward with purpose, but not much else. Bayern needs a legit right back. That foul on the edge of the area on the right was quite unnecessary and stupid.
- Ze wasn’t bad, but Central midfield was possibly the weak link going forward.
- Overall, a better display, but that’s not saying too much. That could also be attributed to Barca taking it easy. When they stepped up a gear after Bayern scored, it was easy to see it was only a matter of time before a goal came.
- Lots of sloppy passes by almost all the players.- Bayern lacks strength in depth, but everyone knows that.
I must also confess that after Barca scored, and even a little before, I sneaked in some Chelsea-’Pool, because that match was sick!
I hope you DVR’d that too, Angela.

I wathced this one last night and I agree with the previous comment that last season, Toni nails that header. There is something wrong that we don’t know about. . .

i think luca toni has been pretty rubbish all season. i hope whoever the manager is next season has the guts to bench him and try out klose and olic as a strike pairing.
it’s not all rensing’s fault that we’ve conceded so many goals – the defense has been shaky as well. i feel like we should have loaned rense out last season to gain some confidence and gain more experience before being tossed into the mix to fill kahn’s shoes. i do feel sorry for him, but i’m also not angry at klinnsman for wanting to put butt in goal.

it’s rather ballsy of klinnsmann to blame his having to play Rensing on upper management… not sounding like he expects to be retained for next year. I do however find it to be the right move. Yes, the central defense has been suspect at best this year, but it still does not excuse being out of position all the time, charging and not charging balls at the wrong time, fisting balls right to opponents, having no clue when clearing balls, etc etc etc… Rensing earned his spot on the bench, hard to feel sorry for him.

Actually not just the central defense… only place we’ve been set all year is Lahm when healthy… he is world class. Also, Klinnsy’s system may get a lot of blame for the defensive woes this year but one of the more astute readers pointed out that the blue print started at Zenit last year. You really can’t coack speed, or in Bayern’s case, lack there of. Lucio and Demichelis are both fine defenders, but not together because neither guy has the speed so really needs to be paired with a much faster option, and Breno is at least a couple years away from being ready.

Roger: I agree with you on Rensing. My problem with him being number one hasn’t really been so much with him (until lately) s much as it has been with the fact that he never had to try for that spot. He was handed a position he didn’t earn and really didn’t deserve. He had nothing to work for and has had no reason to try and better himself because he’s always been relied on no matter how terribly he’s performed. Now, maybe he’ll start trying a little harder.

It just occurred to me today wouldn’t this be an interesting scenario? I remember sometime back Uli Hoeness was openly discussing Oliver Kahn taking over his position as Manager of Bayern Munich when he retired. Cause in Uli words “Kahn has a degree in Business, and would be perfectly suited to this line of work because of his background.” We’ll, with Klinsmann as coach wouldn’t the shoe be on the other foot if Kahn did indeed take over from Uli Hoeness next season!!! Remember what happened in the World Cup in 2006 with Jens Lehmann and Kahn duelling for the no.1 goalkeepers position???
With Regards to next season I wish to see the following players leaving Bayern in the summer to be replaced by:
Sell Cristian Lell Buy Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow
Sell Lucio Buy Michel Bastos from Lille
and buy a faster seasoned Central Defender who is not in his thirties!!!Posted from

I can agree with you there Zermatt, but what about goaltender? Do you really want to go into next year with Rensing and Butt again? But has not played that poorly, but in order to win and win in Europe, you need to have that goal tending that can pick a team up when they are not playing that well.
I have not scoured the differnet sites to see who might be available, but with in Germany, Enke, as previously discussed, might be a good solution, and I’d have to guess he’d be more than happy to get out of Hannover. But Bayern certainly should not limit their search to with in the borders of Germany.
Defensively, we not only need a premium right or left back. Left would be fine since lamm has expressed a preference for the right side anyway, but we need depth. DVB is really the only quality player we have on the bench. Breno does have skills and has shown that in flashes but he is still too young and too raw to be depended on.
There are a couple good articles on ESPN SoccerNet from this week to read. One about Ribery expressing his wanting to stay in Bayern, in which he states if 2 or 3 players are out, Bayern becomes pretty easy to handle which is pretty true. We are loaded in the midfield, but not much else. The other article has Toni backing Mancini for the Bayern post should Klinsy be fired… I didn’t realize Toni was playing so well that he should get to pick the next coach.

And not sure how the rest of you feel, but I sure have grown tired of Toni’s one dimensional game. He asks for an Italian compatriot on the team and rewards us with half the performance of last year. Maybe if we bring in an Italian coach, he can score half of this years total!
I’m for bringing in a Brazilian (Graffiti) just entering the prime of his career to bring up Lucio (if we can’t get more speed) and Breno, and selling the Italian (how has Serie A done in European football this year) back to Italy.

Roger, I agree with you about the goalie, but I consider that Adler, Enke and Neuer are great options and is not necesary go abroad to search for a solution, my order is this one, except for money (Adler)we should not have problems to sign one of them. As I see it we need another 24-year-young-Kahn, and for me the name is Adler.

If I had to pick a goalkeeper my preference would be Sebastian Frey from Fiorentina! But I think our biggest problem area in the team right now is the pourous central defense, and we desperately need a replacement for the continuing hapless Lucio who is not interested in the bundesliga anymore!!! Maybe we should call Lucio Mr 50% because he only turns up mentally for Champion League matches!!!

Im always surprised at the crazy hatred for Lucio. Sure, the guy can make some bone-head errors but he is without question the best central defender on this team. It’d be nice to replace him with a better central defender, but still the guy takes way too much heat.

Adler would be an awesome option except hasn’t he in the past expressed an immense hatred for Bayern? If he hates Bayern this much, he probably would not want to be there.
