Player Profile: Mark van Bommel

By: Angela | August 4th, 2008

Mark... because he's my favoriteSince Dish Network has disappointed my Bundesliga Loving American self by canceling their contract with Gol TV, I am going to start my player profiles to console my broken heart. You’re all fabulous readers and really up to date on the team, but maybe I will tell you something you didn’t quite know yet. This is the first entry in my new Player Profile section and you’ll be none too surprised that I started off with my favorite, the lovely Mark van Bommel.

Full name: Mark Peter Gertuda Andreas van Bommel
Date of birth: April 22, 1977
Birthplace: Maasbracht, Netherlands
Nationality: Dutch
EU passport: Yes
Height: 187 cm (6′1″)
Weight: 84 kg (185 lbs)
Club: Bayern München
Position: Defensive Midfielder
Number: 17
Contract expires: June 2009
Previous clubs: Fortuna Sittard > PSV > (free) Barcelona > (€6m) Bayern München

He commands presence when he’s on the pitch. He’s a leader, he pulls his team together. He’s the first one to argue when a foul has been committed against his mates and let’s face it, he is good at taking a foul and initiating them too. When there is a game of importance that he can not attend, like during his suspension last year for the Champions League, he sends the entire team individual inspirational text messages even though he can’t be with them. He is the care-giver of the team and no matter what happens, everyone knows they can count on him. He’s got great air game (which has lead me to dub him the flying dutchman™) and couldn’t play without his tongue of wonder™. Have you noticed how often he sticks his tongue out? He may not be the Captain of the team yet, but he definitely fulfills that role. Whether he wears the ‘C’ or not this year, you can be assured that Mark will continue his on pitch dominance and off pitch guidance. He’s got a style that is unique to him. When new team mates come on board, such as Miroslav Klose, he is the first to take them in and make them feel welcome. Forging a great professional relationship as well as a true friendship. Miroslav Klose has said that Mark was the first person to make him feel welcome at Bayern. He goes the extra distance even when he doesn’t have to. Aggression accompanied by compassion. Not many people can pull that off.

While his on pitch antics haven’t always been favorable, there is no doubt that his passion for the game is something that sometimes carries his emotions to a boiling point. He’s gotten better over the years, but there are still moments when his better judgement takes a vacation and he reacts before he thinks.

Position: Midfield
Midfield general Mark van Bommel is a tremendous talent who complements his consistent displays with trademark goals from distance. There is even training footage of him set up at a distance of 30-40 from goal just launching shots into the net. I wonder if Klinsmann will continue this training regimen for him.

Club
van Bommel developed into arguably the Eredivisie’s foremost midfield player during a seven-year spell at SC Fortuna Sittard, his first professional club, after breaking through at RKVV Maasbracht in his hometown. He moved on to PSV Eindhoven in 1999 and was a league champion in three of his first four seasons. van Bommel enjoyed a superb 2004/05 season, helping PSV to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals and claiming a hat-trick in a victory against AFC Ajax that proved crucial to regaining the Eredivisie crown from the Amsterdam club. Fourteen league goals was a personal best, earning him both the Dutch Player of the Year award and a three-year contract from FC Barcelona having bade farewell to PSV by lifting the Dutch Cup after a 4-0 win against Willem II. More glory followed in Spain as Van Bommel helped Barça to an 18th league title and finally got his hands on the UEFA Champions League trophy. But he was falling out of favour and joined FC Bayern München in August 2006 for a reported €3m on a three-year deal.

van Bommel was signed by PSV in 1999 where he formed a midfield partnership with Swiss international Johann Vogel. He won three Eredivisie titles and two Johan Cruijff Shields with the club. He was also named Dutch Player of the Year in 2001 and 2005.

In his final season with PSV, having assisted the team to the Dutch league title and a Champions League semi-final place, he was expected to join his father-in-law Bert van Marwijk who currently manages the Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, but van Bommel opted to stay at PSV until the end of the 2004/2005 season.

After the Champions League semi-final loss to AC Milan, he was linked with a move to FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan. With the Eredivisie title in PSV’s hands at the end of April, he confirmed he would join FC Barcelona in May 2005 after the Catalonian club captured La Liga.

FC Barcelona

With Frank Rijkaard as his new coach at Barcelona, van Bommel played 24 matches scoring twice in his first season, winning La Liga and the UEFA Champions League with players such as Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Ludovic Giuly.

FC Bayern Munich
On August 26, 2006 Bayern Munich team manager Uli Hoeneß announced van Bommel would be joining the Bavarian side. Media reports speculated that the move was influenced by the ongoing Owen Hargreaves transfer saga, but Hoeneß insisted the club intended to go forward with both players. Bayern Munich paid $7.7million to Barcelona in the deal.

National team
His debut for the Dutch national team was on October 7, 2000 against Cyprus which was won 4-0. However, for ‘Oranje’, he did not make an appearance in a major tournament until 2006, with the Dutch national team failing to qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and injury preventing him from playing during Euro 2004 in Portugal.

The Dutch national team manager Marco van Basten was dissatisfied with van Bommel’s defensive performance in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Romania and was subsequently not selected for the rest of the qualification series. With many Dutch football observers believing van Bommel’s international career to be over, he was selected back into the Dutch side for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

In the 2006 World Cup, van Bommel played in all the games for his country except the match against Argentina of which both teams have already, by then, sealed their passage to the knockout stage of the tournament. His position in the team was as right-half. His duties were mainly to play the anchor role in the Dutch 3-man midfield in their usual 4-3-3 formation.

He was the first of many players booked in the second-round match Dutch team defeat against Portugal dubbed ‘The Battle of Nuremberg’ by the press. After the World Cup, Van Bommel was not called up for the Euro 2008 qualifiers versus Luxembourg and Belarus. In September 2006, after his move to Bayern, he was added to Van Basten’s squad to face Bulgaria; however Van Bommel stated (alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy) to no longer intend to play for ‘Oranje’ as long as Van Basten is in charge. Van Bommel has won 40 caps and has scored 7 goals for the Dutch national team.

Did you know?
Having joined Barcelona, van Bommel was taught Spanish in a convent just outside Eindhoven.

UEFA Champions League (2006)
Dutch Eredivisie (2000, 2001, 2003, 2005)

Spanish Super Cup (2005, 2006)

Dutch Footballer of the Year (2001, 2002)

Other:
He is married to his ex-trainer’s (Bert van Marwijk) daughter.
October 01 2006: Mark van Bommel has told Netherlands coach Marco van Basten that he will not play for the Oranje under the current coaching staff, the Royal Netherlands FA has announced. The good news is that now his father in law has taken over and there might be a chance for us to see him back in the Netherlands line.

If you’d like to check out a good interview with Mark, go on over to the FCB TV Homestory at Youtube.

A short clip of him speaking English because I adore him and his need to think as he speaks.

And just for humor sake; I am not the only one that thinks he’s a sexy bastard ;)

The last video is quite funny. I guess Mark is in the Oranje and Drogba is in the National Team of Cote d’Ivoire. But when did this two team play against each other? On the World Cup 2006?
Anyway, Drogba can often react before he thinks, so they’re similar in this aspect.

    1. Mark looks good in orange.
    2. Drogba. Uh–he always is a physical person.
    3. I can’t wait until you do Miro! (:

Harry: You went from being my hero to crushing me by comparing Mark to Drogba. ;)

Lynn: Mark looks good in everything, but I am so completely biased it’s not even funny anymore. ;)
Miro will be soon. Either next or third. :) Probably next since he’s Mark’s BFF. ;)

Harry, correct. The two sides did played each other during the 2006 World Cup. Forgot which round though.

    ‘Probably next since he’s Mark’s BFF. ;)’
Pretty please, Angela. Because Miro was actually my most favourite player during the 2006 World Cup. :) Ah yes, I am kind of biased in my reason over there. ;)

Well, the big news of the day seems to be another crippling injury to Willy Sagnol. I’m sure Angela feels just a touch of schadenfreude seeing the longtime heir-apparent to the captain’s armband out of action for an extended period. Actually, one has to think we’ve heard about the last from Sagnol in a Bayern jersey with this development, and it is sort of a reflective moment, given that he’s the last man left from the Champions League winning squad..

Luke: Yes, I’m devestated can’t you tell? I don’t think he would’ve gotten the armband anyways, but that’s just my opinion. I really, quite obviously, hope it goes to Mark.

Angela: I’m sorry to disappoint you, I didn’t want to compare Mark to Drogba. The difference between them is obvious, I just wanted to say that both of them are warm-headed or hot-blooded (actually I don’t know which word is better), however I haven’t known this of Mark yet, and it was hard to believe, because he is a friendly guy from pictures or videos. Today I saw the summary of Bayern-Bochum (last season), and I saw Mark getting two yellow cards, so I have to believe he has this mentality on the pitch. Anyway, I like both Mark and Drogba, and Angela, you made me really like Mark Peter Gertuda Andreas van Bommel ;)
Will you do Oli Kahn as well? Summarizing his career, maybe. I’m waiting for everybody since I don’t want to make comparisons between the members… :P Errr… What is BFF?

I can’t believe you girls…I mean Angela and Diana, enjoyed watching this video of Drogba touching Van Bommel’s private area. Maybe you girls do love bad boys and thats why you enjoy football so much!!!Bad Girls!
By the way, this was the 2nd game of the first of WC2006, and we won 2:1 against a very good Ivory Coast.
By the way, its half-time between Bayern and Inter, and the score is 0:0. Who is the Captain for Bayern?
Why is Sagnol still playing for Bayern? He retired from International competition at the 2008 Euro after a bysmal defensive showing against the Dutch, without Van Bommel.
    Nice blog Angela!

Harry: I’m not disappointed. I was just giving you a hard time. ;) Mark has definitely had a temper in the past on the pitch. He’s getting better, but it’s not uncommon for him to get carded. He’s settled a bit, but still gets into trouble from time to time. I will certainly add Oli to the list of player profiles. :)

Van Basten: We enjoy the game just as much as the players. There isn’t anything wrong with that. :) Currently, Mark has been the only Captain in pre-season games. It has been handed over to other players, but never when Mark has been on the pitch. In his absence, it was Lucio and Demichelis. They have yet to name the permanent Captain, but I’m hoping the preseason will be the trend we continue to see into the season.

I don’t look for Sagnol to be playing much longer. Especially now that he has picked up another injury. That doesn’t bode well for his career.

I’m glad you like the blog!

Very well written article but let’s agree on something here, now I don’t know about you girls and how you define “sexy” but Van Bommel is nothing near that word. He’s not even close to half handsome if that can be said. In other words he’s an ugly b@stard, however, we do agree that he’s an outrageous player, outstanding leader, and the right man for Every job. I can never stop thanking Barcelona for selling him to my one and only team Bayern.

Too bad we lost against Inter Milan today but hey, we played pretty well and that what really counts. We have a whole new season to make up for losing friendlies. :)

Looked like a standard Bayern game: gave up a completely stupid goal on another defensive marking error then proceeded to dominate possession and chances but failed to make anything great develope in the final third. Both teams were playing at about 75% pace and nobody seemed to care a bit about who won.

Only bright spot was Kroos who continues to impress and was unlucky to not score at least 1 goal. The second shot had one heck of a save.

MachaholiQ8… stick around and you’ll see, Mark is the epitomy of Sexy to me. I’ve got quite a big crush. That will be evident the longer you read the blog.

I didn’t think today’s match was spectacular for either side. Rensing was great most of the time and Inter’s keeper was top notch. Some of the passing was terrible, some of the defending was terrible. I’m working on a post about it all though.

LUKE: I have to agree. I really wished Sagnol would transfer out of Bayern this summer, but I guess given how poor his recent form has been, there were no takers for him. But he used to be one of my favourite players for Bayern in former years - and regardless of his most recent performance, it’s really sad to see a former great end his career (pure speculation, of course) on this kind of injury. Does indeed give pause for thought.
SHANE: I just got back home from the stadium, and sadly have to agree. How frustrating to see Bayern dominate, yet fail to score a goal. Not to mention having to suffer through was it 2 or 3 scenes of Lucio plowing blindly forward and then losing the ball?! I also have to agree that Kroos was indeed the bright spot of the evening. He’s definately caught onto the quick one-touch passing system - it even seems he’s a bit too quick for some of his teammates. Hope they catch up soon.

What did you guys think of the 5-3-2 formation? I thought it was fantastic - gave Lahm and Lell lots of room to play forward. What a shame Demichelis had to leave the match so early, when they switched back to 4-4-2 the match seemed to really run out of steam.

Let’s hope that this is just an example of what Klinsman meant when he said his preparations are designed to have the team in shape by the 15th of August - and let’s hope we see a different Bayern on that date!

    :)

Anyhow, van Bommel is back in the international fold once more with the Dutch national team, Angela. Or at least Bert van Marwijk (or the father-in-law) has named him in his provisional squad in a friendly against Russia on August 20 - http://www.sportinglife.com/football/overseas/germany/news/story_get.dor?STORY_NAME=international_feed/08/08/06/SOCCER_Ned-Holland_Squad.html&TEAMHD=germany

August 15 will be when the final squad will be announced.
