Because we could all use a little pink panther too cheer us up and get us through what is sure to be a wacky transfer window in Bayern.

We Juventini have been tracking Schweinsteiger closely. Can you tell me what his situation is with the contract? Is Bayern not offering him one, is he refusing to sign, or is it a question of terms?

alessio: Right now, they are in talks, but that’s about it. He says he wants to go abroad, but that Bayern is his first priority so who knows. No one is really giving a straight answer, but I think it is the goal of the administration to keep him on. We’ll have to see what happens I think. For now, it’s a waiting game.

i guess if Bayern sells or buys any players in the winter will come down to economic conditions in Germany and by extension Europe and so far things are not looking positively economically in Europe or Germany so player prices will be inflated and Bayern will probably wait until summer to make any signings or sales.

    Alessio:

Angela is correct, Bayern and Schweinsteiger are in talks, but nothing firm has come out of them. Schweinsteiger is in a good position for himself, because Bayern do want to re-sign him, but Juve and now Real Madrid are probably going to push the price upwards. Kicker reported that Juve are willing to give him 3.5 mil Eur/per season over 4 seasons (my understanding is that he currently makes 2.2 mil/per). Bayern are set to shed some big salaries–Sagnol will likely be gone, and he is the 2nd highest paid player on the team (incredibly). Van Bommel, Van Buyten and Lucio all currently earn significantly more than Schweinsteiger as well, and I think any of them would be sacrificed in order to re-sign Schweini. So, I think Bastian will be laughing all the way to Hypovereinsbank thanks to the foreign attention, and I expect he’ll be in Munich for some years to come.

Poldi difinitively says that he wants to leave this winter…. LET HIM GO Klinsi! You have Donovan and he will be perfectly happy sitting on the bench, unlike Poldi. Poldi needs more playing time so that he can compete on the national team.

Game starts in about an hour…. I CANNOT wait, I have logged into Premiere.de and am streaming it now, although all I am seeing is the banner for the game since coverage does not start for almost 30 minutes… I was supposed to BE at this game, but work kept me from getting there in time.

    Laurie: Steal away!
Jocamryn: Poldi’s biggest problem with Bayern is NOT that he doesn’t play. He has a much bigger and much more mature reason for wanting to leave Bayern. Everyone is just tuning out the real reasons and blaming it on the lack of playing time.
Luke: You’ll have to be my wingman if van Bommel or van Buyten or BOTH leave in the winter or at the end of the season. My heart won’t be able to take it.

    DAMN happy with tonight’s results

First Half…ehhh, should have been at LEAST 3:) Bayern.

    2nd Half, good to go.

I’m happy that SOMETHING went well for me today.

Oddo is my hero and nice to see Klose getting back into form.

Ok guys, celebrate the moment–Van Buyten and Lucio together in the back AND a clean sheet?? I didn’t think it was possible! So much for Romania overtaking Germany in the UEFA coefficients!

Jocamryn–I was stuck with the Konferenz feed, so I didn’t get to see a *whole* lot, but I thought Oddo was a little off in the 1st half, but really picked it up in the 2nd. In the CL, you need your stars to play like stars, and that’s what they did tonight, even though they basically accomplished what they should be expected to accomplish against Bucharest.

Someone check my math, but I believe Bayern will finish first in the group with a win or a non-scoreless draw in Lyon. I’m encouraged, I believe that’s a very possible result.

Angela: I gotta comment on Podolski. First of all, Cologne’s management confirms they have had talks with Bayern. So, we probably can’t put any credibility in anything coming from Bayern management at this point. I’m sorry, but Podolski is a whiny SOB, bottom line. I know that you always tend to side with the player in these disputes, but management, especially management at a club like Bayern (who will always be looking over their shoulder for Spanish or English giants swooping in for their talent) simply cannot allow themselves to be leveraged by players who have signed contracts. The whole Hargreaves affair was a perfect example. Bayern played it wonderfully–and the result was came out of it with the ability to acquire Ribery. So you have to consider that in these debates. Believe me, I can understand his feelings if Podolski is simply homesick and just wants to spend more time around his kid, etc. But he ought to have thought about that before agreeing to a 4 year contract and having the club spend 10 million Euros for him. Be an adult. Know your responsibilities and carry them out. It’s time that he grows up and learns this is a business, and I hope Uli Hoeness will teach him that lesson over the next 6 months.

‘First of all, Cologne’s management confirms they have had talks with Bayern.’
No wonder I was watching CNN World Sport (we get the CNN’s international feed here) and it mentioned that before reporting on Bayern’s 3-0 win over Steaua. But then again, I am not surprised Cologne had made the move.

Man, I missed the Bayern game since Nevada Smith’s decide to show the match on a delay. The one day I am in New York and able to watch and I’m shafted :(

Anyway, the only way Poldi will be allowed to leave is if Bayern gets a replacement who is legitimately ahead of Landon Donovan, if he shows up at all. what complicates the move further is that Donovan will be around only through March, beyond which the MLS has seemingly set a ridiculous asking price of 10mil or so.

There is no way Bayern can succeed with 2 and a half strikers if Poldi leaves and Donovan stops by for a brief visit.

Plus I can’t remember the last time Bayern closed out a major player deal in January and rightly so. I read a “study” a few years ago that for all the transfers completed in the January transfer window made by big clubs (mostly English), nearly all were failures…

A Kap: I would tend to agree with your last point about major January deals–except that I think the Russians are an exception, given their league schedule. If Bayern added one of the Zenit players being rumored, I think the Bundesliga break would be just enough time for those guys to recharge their batteries and make a contribution.

I really don’t understand the CL group stage tie breaker process. So it is not goal differential? Im told it is most away goals. If that’s the case then we need to win in Lyon to take top spot (Lyon has 8 Away Goals and we have 2, I’m not envisioning a 6-6 tie).

Luke: How did you come up with a non-scoreless draw puts us top of group?

Regardless, of whether we finish 1st or 2nd the draw is going to be brutal. It looked like there could be some cinderella teams in the final 16 but over the last 2 weeks most of that has faded and we are left with a group of juggernauts. It should get very fun come 2009.

There’s still a chance for Anorthosis or Bordeaux to sneak in and steal a place though. Top spot in group would give us the opporunity to have a draw against Panathinaikos/Anorthosis, Sporting Lisbon, or Porto all of which I would be happy with, although none of those are slouches. I wouldn’t mind facing Real Madrid or Roma at the moment, but in 3 months they could be out of their current slumps and on a roll. If it has to be an English team I pray it is Arsenal.

Shane: This is my understanding: in the group stage the first tie breaker is points gained against the tied opponent. So, if either team won in Lyon, that would break the tie. The second would be away goals *against the tied opponent*. Right now Lyon have 1 on Bayern. So if Bayern were to score 2 or more goals in Lyon and draw, Bayern wins on that tie break. But what if it’s 1-1 again? The third tie break is goal differential for the entire stage–again advantage Bayern. A 0-0 draw would give the group to Lyon based on the 2nd tiebreak, as they would win on head to head away goals, 1-0. Hope that’s more and not less clear! The knockout stage is a bit easier!

I agree with the above comment that short of another more permanent forward, Poldi is going nowhere. I really don’t see much happening transfer wise until summer.

The main concern for Bayern needs to be getting Schweini signed more long term. This summer has potential for being very turbulent, so whatever they can do for continuities sake needs to be explored, and at his age and talent, Schweini is mega important.

Read no further if you’re watching on delay: We’ll give Angela the opportunity to do a post but I just have to get it out of my system…That was the match of the season right there. It may not have been the best-played or the prettiest, but it shows this team is serious about being Meister again. Again more analysis later.

Zermatt: I wonder where they get that number. Well, it would double their investment, and Man City would probably pay it, so maybe it’ll happen.

Luke: I didn’t see the CL match. So thanks for the comments. On Podolski, I don’t like him. BUT, I have issues with everyone only talking about him complaining about not getting playing time when that ISN’T the main reason that he wants to leave. What he has said, on several occasions, about why he really wants to leave, everyone is ignoring. That’s what aggravates me. I am not a fan of his at all.

I’m watching today’s match now and will do a post shortly.

WHat a game… Actually, it was methodical and rather boring. Lucio stopped play due to injury, and then when VanBuyten actually took a knock it brought jeers from the crowd.

Toni put it an opportunity goal and Klose forced in a good one. Both good ones since we won.

Ze’ hooked it up, I sure hope that God tells him to stay at Bayern. He’s such a force on the field.

    Please PLEASE, let Poldi go.

Now… on to Hoffenheim. I think we can beat this team of nonstars. Sure they have rocked the 1st Liga, but they just AREN’T FC Bayern. As long as we’re firing on all cylinders, all their “team play” sin’t enough to overtake us.

    We’ll be Herbstmeisters

Rensing earned a clean sheet which makes me happy.
