Transfer Rumors

By: Angela | November 12th, 2008

Angela is not a happy camper. I will have to start boycotting Bayern I just know it. The hottest transfer rumors right now are that both my guys, van Buyten and van Bommel, will be out at the end of the season. PSV and Schalke both have been linked with van Bommel. PSV have already approached Mark’s agent about him returning when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. This doesn’t make me very happy at all.

On top of that, there is much interest in van Buyten and I hate to see him go. It’s no big secret that he’s one of my favorites. I wouldn’t blame him for leaving… he’s under-utilized and under-appreciated with his current club, but I don’t want him to see him leave for purely selfish reasons. ;)

Other transfer rumors include the departure of Lucio. I don’t know why he’d leave. No matter how bad he screws up he never gets benched so I’m not sure why he’d consider playing elsewhere. But he did cast some doubt over his future at Bayern. “I don’t have any particular plans because I want to concentrate on the season, but only dear God knows what happens afterwards. I have a contract until 2010. But I don’t know what will happen after the summer.”

If the transfer rumors are true, van Bommel, van Buyten and Lucio will be gone by the end of the season at the latest. Ze Roberto is definitely out at the end of the season. Podolski wants to be gone. And it looks like Bayern are already looking for a replacement in Landon Donovan as he joined Bayern for some MLS offseason training. His official website had this quote: “I am pleased that Jürgen Klinsmann and Bayern are giving me this chance to get to know their new performance center and stay fit alongside their great international footballers.” Could he be arriving at the end of the season if Podolski does indeed get the opportunity to leave? Jansen already left. Kroos is making noise that he wants to leave because he’s unhappy. Schweinsteiger may make Bayern pony up if they intend to keep him after 2009 when he becomes a free agent. Schweini has yet to renew his contract with Bayern and while he says it would be nice, he also says playing abroad would be “very attractive”. AC Milan, Juventus and Inter have all contacted his agent about a possible move from Bayern.

Klinsmann has arrived and Bayern has started to fall apart internally. Players that formerly wished to see their career end at Bayern are now having second thoughts and are trying to get out of their contracts. Players that formerly adored and praised Klinsmann and his tactics no longer seem happy and no longer seem to want to stand by him and play under him. Bayern are falling apart at the seams after an extraordinarily successful season under Hitzfeld and a rough start under Klinsmann. Discontent seems to be the chorus in Bavarian since the new coach took over. Coincidence?

    Yes.

Jan: Its interesting to me that so many people who had expressed their desire to end their career at Bayern are now looking at leaving. These are the same people who only made such statements last season. The only difference this year is Klinsmann. One has to wonder why so many players are upset.

OK, maybe I should elaborate a bit more :-) :
van Buyten: he had been underutilized and all that under Hitzfeld as well. In fact, Klinsmann made him stay a little longer, since van Buyten was looking for a second chance under Klinsmann. He didn’t get it and wants to leave, fair enough, but nothing Klinsmann triggered in the first place.
Lucio: Lucio had been giving interviews about his dreams to play abroad one day during the Hitzfeld/Magath days as well. So nothing new here either, and nothing linking his wishes to Klinsmann either.
ze Roberto: Ze Roberto had also always been open and clear about his intentions to continue playing for a few more years, but do so in another league/country – and he said that before Klinsmann arrived as well. Again completely unconnected to Klinsmann.
Podolski: he was discontent under both Magath and Hitzfeld as well. In fact, Klinsmann might be the reason, why he didn’t leave in the summer already, since he might have hoped for a new beginning. Didn’t work out, so he’ll leave. But that’s the culmination of two and a half unsuccessful seasons at Bayern. You can only blame Klinsmann for a half season here.
Kroos: he is only looking for a loan move. And it’s not like he got a lot of playing time under Hitzfeld either.
Schweinsteiger: we’ll have to wait and see what happens here.
van Bommel: he might actually be the only real Klinsmann casualty.

I don’t see a lot of “sudden” discontent there. You can also look at the following players:

Lahm: he was keen to move to another club, but Klinsmann convinced him, that his project at Bayern could make Bayern a real contender in Europe again, so he signed a new contract.
Toni: he had been openly talking about returning to Serie A/Fiorentina to end his career there. Now he’s talking about ending his career at Bayern.

In short, all the current potential transfer activity combined with Klinsmann’s arrival is a coincidence – or better: it has been coming for a long time. And you have actually more examples of Klinsmann keeping players quiet or happy than the other way round.

I disagree Angela. I do agree with Jan that it is a coincidence. While the only change has been Klinsmann, the difference is that a lot of these players want to move as a natural progression in their development.

Kroos wants playing time and so does Poldi, van Bommel has age against him, and it is natural the club would think of offloading him while he is still up there.

Schweini wants to improve himself and he has a right to consider that option, Bayern could get a lot of money for him, although Italy is not the place for him just yet, in my opinion.

Lucio is not going anywhere except maybe the MLS in 2010 is my prediction.

*Shakes head* I can’t believe we may be losing our team the way it is. It’s going to be hard to watch with all the ‘main characters’ leaving.

A Kap: Poldi’s main reason for wanting to leave Bayern has nothing to do with playing time. It’s intresting how many people have missed that.

    van Bommel isn’t exactly old…

I just can’t believe that all of those names are linked with exits, and Klinsmann may be thinking, “Yeah, Landon Donovan. That’s the ticket.”

    Whoops, my mistakes.
About vB, maybe the club has a couple of new players in mind and he’ll just be the casualty, to take one for the team…

I don’t know about Donovan. I find it hard to believe that he’d have made enough progress in the MLS to come back to the Bundesliga after two unsuccessful stints at Leverkusen. I’ve seen him play a few times – he’s like a homeless man’s Pippo Inzaghi – he needs a lot of attempts on goal to get something on target.

I hate to think about Schweini, Podolski, and Lahm leaving FCBayern! Although I watch games in all the leagues, I love to watch these boys play for the “home” team.

Good analysis by Jan–I guess I’ll throw in some thoughts

Lahm: He’s not going anywhere, but it was a coup that we got him to re-sign. Maybe a hometown boy plays out his entire career there.

Kroos: Frankly, he deserves more playing time. I’m not saying he should be playing 90 minutes every match, but he could be put to better use. Although it was very beneficial for Lahm to get his seasoning with Stuttgart, I think Bayern ought to keep Kroos around and work him into the rotation. It seems that is already beginning.

van Bommel: You’re getting to the point of diminishing returns with him. I’m not saying we’re there, but I’d rather him go a season too early than a season too late. He’s probably got 2 seasons left tops after this one, so a move is probably justified. Bayern got a lot more out of him than anyone expected though. Still miss Owen Hargreaves?

Schweini: I don’t see how moving to Italy really helps him. I’m not sure that it would be encouraged by Jogi either. I would be in the camp in favor of re-signing him, I think he’s showing a new level of maturity.

Borowski: Given last year’s transfer purchases, Borowski on a free was a welcome, if somewhat underwhelming pick-up. However, does he come to Bayern if anyone but Klinsmann is there? I doubt it. And yet, where would these team be without him?

Landon Donovan is perfectly appropriate as a replacement for *Schlaudraff* (who was never actually replaced) but not Podolski. And, what do you expect, with an all American staff? You’re going to continue to see top American and MLS players get opportunities at Bayern, and that’s exciting as an American, even if I don’t think Landon Donovan can accomplish a whole lot in the Bundesliga. I think the only way Podolski moves in the winter is if Bayern acquires Arshavin. I don’t doubt that Bayern will *try* for Arshavin, but I think it’s likely to end similarly to their neck and neck bidding for van Nistlerooy. What’s more likely, in my opinion, is the acquisition of Tymoschuk. He’s the holding midfielder the club needs for their Champions League ambitions going forward.

Jansen was a huge mistake. We need to stop playing Lahm out of position.

MvB and vBuyten, leaving would come as no surprise

    Ze’s performance defies his age.

Lucio leaving? Well, as inconsistent as he has been playing…I’m not sure that Breno is ready to step up. Lell by default may break into the starting XI which concerns me.

Bring in Adler… he may put some fire under Rensing’s arse. Read a Bild article asking how long it will take for FCB to get him.

I’m not sure that FCB can afford to let all these people go. We’ll need to shell out some serious Euros to replace them while keeping them would be a cheaper option in the near term.

Jocamryn: I don’t think Jansen should’ve been let go. I can’t believe the brilliance that is Ze. He is like a fine wine and just gets better with age. If van Bommel and van Buyten disappear from the team, I will be too heartbroken to go on. ;) I just wish that just once someone would actually hear poor Podolski and listen to what he’s actually saying about why he wants to leave. No one seems to get it.

Jean-Pierre: It’s not that I don’t like Klinsmann…. I don’t like what he’s doing to the team. And while Jan has some good points, the problem is that some of the players were discontent before, the majority are discontent after. Players, like MvB, wanted to finish their career in Bayern, now they’re itching to get out. There is clearly something wrong with that picture.

Here’s another way of looking at it: We all know many things that Franz Beckenbauer, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness have in common–but here’s one you might have overlooked: All three of them finished their playing careers with clubs other than Bayern. So, we all need to accept that no matter how beloved or how skilled, or even how loyal to a certain club, many players finish their time somewhere else. Roy Makaay is probably a good model for the fate that awaits MvB–I don’t think he’s any less revered by Bayern fans since leaving, and it was simply time for him to move on, at age 32.

What a game… Up 2:0 and once Sosa comes in, he leave the goal mouth open for a goal. Really ticks me off! The only reason I can think that Schweini came out was becasue he is still fighting injury. Mark my words, we’re not going to see Sosa for a while.

Rensing…The first goal was not his fault, Sosa left his position! WTF was Rensing doing running out of the goal with a beehive of activity in front of it?!?!

We had it wrapped up and it unraveled in a 10 min span!

I think we can safely assume that Bayern are going to lose at least four, probably five players come next european summer. Ze Roberto, Van Bommel, Lukas Podolski
are sure bets to go, and maybe Schweini and Lucio will follow?

With three of those coming from the midfield that will only leave us with the following midfielders:

Franck Ribery, Andreas Ottl, Hamit Altintop, Jose Ernesto Sosa, Tim Borowski, and Toni Kroos.

So next european summer Bayern will be bringing in at least two new midfielders, and a striker and a defender are my guesses! Time will tell of course, but these are my predictions!

Don’t even count Sosa, WTF has he done for FCB? He has oficially become my least favorite player. What does he bring to the table?

Just becasue Maradona SAYS he’s good enough for his team… I mean really, IS he? It Better not have gone to his head becasue in my opinion, in the defense he’s a greater liability than Lell… what a dullard.
