Bayern Bits
By: Angela | April 15th, 2008A roundup of what’s going on with Bayern.
01. They’re currently in search of a midfielder. As we all know, Roberto is only contracted through 2009 and thus far there is no news on him renewing his contract for any longer than he had intended when he re-signed. The press is doing what they do best and trying to spin it as a replacement for van Bommel and Roberto, but it’s not, thus far, a replacement for van Bommel. They have spoken to him about taking over the Captain position when Oli retires.
02. Lukas Podolski is now, officially, a proud Papa. He and Monika had their baby boy. Congrats to them both.
03. The best news, for me, aside from Bayern one day offering Mark a lifetime contract
is that van Buyten will squash every Premier League teams hopes by staying in Munich. He has publicly come forward, along with his agent, and stated that he will be going nowhere. “Bayern are changing coach next season, with Jurgen Klinsmann coming in and Daniel is keen to see how things go under him,” agent Christophe Henrotay told Sky Sports. “He is feeling fine at Bayern and he is happy in Germany.” So it looks like our Belgian will be staying.
04. Jan Schlaudraff will be leaving Bayern in the summer transfer window. He has limited playing time due to Bayern already having Podolski, Klose and Toni. Now I won’t go into who deserves more playing time in Podolski vs Schlaudraff drama, but it will be sad to see him go. He’s been productive when he’s been afforded playing time. He has asked to leave and Bayern will not fight him to stay. Bayern general manager told Munich newspaper TZ: “Jan asked us to be allowed to leave the club. We have granted him his wish.” The player added: “I asked about my prospects at the club. It was said there weren’t any. Therefore I said that I want to go.” Evidently there have already been offers for him and a pretty solid offer from an un-named Bundesliga club and he just wants things to get sorted out quickly.
05. On Wednesday, Bayern will take on Eintracht Frankfurt and for this match we will have Franck Ribery back. Franck was rested at the weekend due to a foot injury he picked up in the UEFA match mid-week against Getafe. However, we will be missing Oliver Kahn. He is suffering from a shoulder injury, that he picked up at the weekend which is why Rensing played the second half. Rensing will make the start on Wed. which could be good news. In his ninteen appearances he has yet to lose a match. Either we have a good thing going with him or it’s about time for him to take a loss. I’m hopeful the good luck will continue.
06. Though we may have Franck Ribery back, we will be without Miroslav Klose who couldn’t take part in Tuesday’s training due to injury so he is unlikely for the Eintracht match. We will also be without Marcell Jansen. Hitzfeld has said he will play all the regulars that are fit.

I think the piece that this team is missing is a world class holding midfielder. Hope to see that addressed this summer.

I think in a sense, Borowski is the replacement for Ze Roberto. But, they have a very muddled situation with the midfield in general. I think it all become clearer if/when they make up their mind on Schweinsteiger–I’m not convinced he’s staying. I think Sagnol gets the armband, if he isn’t sold–but I think he’s the most likely player to be sold.

Luke: They have an awful situation in midfield. When Mark isn’t there, its a mess.. and he certainly can’t carry it on his own. Roberto doesn’t have any intention of staying longer than he signed for. He is planning an eventual move to MLS…..
Sagnol needs to go. There just isn’t room for him anymore.Posted from

Sadly I agree with Angela about Sagnol. He was great, but I think most of us would agree that Lahm and Jansen have surpassed him at this point.
Here’s my big question: Do we need a new striker? Given the inconsistent play from Podolsk and Klose, should we sell one of them and go after some other blockbuster? I don’t think that we will since we have so much money tied up in the striker position, but we’ll want to make sure we have quality in our depth for a long Champions League season next year. Thoughts?

As long as Klinsmann only plays with two up front a true blockboster signing would bring the same problem Bayern now have with a frustrated Podolski. They should bring in two supertalented 17 year olds, who are happy to play second fiddle to Kloni for a couple of years. Give Podolski to another Buli club. There are some who could really use a quality striker.

I pity Schlaudraff. Whenever he is given more than 20 minutes to play, he shows his talent. In Bayern’s 3-1 win against Frankfurt, Schlaudraff’s run and assist to Toni ensured the win. If he goes, he will be remembered as “that player who almost secured the title for us”.
I hope Klinsmann does something to make Podolski happy. Seriously, when Klose or Toni retire, Podolski is Bayern’s future, not just a 2-3 year investment in future Champions League campaigns.

Oh, Bayern are reported to be after Mathieu Flamini of Arsenal. Do Bayern have a chance of snapping him up if he’s being chased by Juve and Milan?

Flams does like money, munichsoul, so if they get him in the same way they got Toni (giving him a very large salary) it’s possible.

Flamini would fit the bill perfectly, imo.

Jan: I agree about Podolski. The only thing that would make me change my mind is if somehow Toni can’t work under Klinsmann and Klose and Podolski find the magic they did in the world cup. Unfortunately, I don’t know that Bayern is the place for him. He can’t seem to keep a consistent form for Bayern and he just won’t get the playing time if he continues on like this. I know that Klinsmann is a fan, but being a fan is only going to go so far when it comes to coaching your team.
Aaron: I guess this is where my other thoughts come in. I really think Podolski needs to go. There is really no reason to not play Kloni, but if we could get someone younger who doesn’t mind sitting on the bench for a few years and filling in here and there, that would be the way to go. Klose isn’t really inconsistent.. he’s just in a goal scoring slump. He still provides chances for his teammates to score and still provides a lot of quality play.

hey guys, have you heard? Philipp Lahm is not signing a contract extension. Will we sell him early, when he’s worth a lot of money and big clubs are after him or play him through 2009 and fall to a free transfer? If he goes, I want to see Gorlitz back at Bayern, for ample cover and competition.

I just posted about this. They’ll sell him before losing him on a free transfer.
