10 thoughts after #10’s day in the sun
By: Luke | August 30th, 20091) A day later is perhaps a better time to write, letting the euphoria of a skillful, beautiful, exciting victory sink in a little bit. But as fans, we’ve got to try to maintain some balance to things. Just as last weekend should not have sent us looking for a ledge to leap off of, this week should not find us dreaming of rainbows and lollipops and free Paulaner forever. This was reflected by Mario Gomez’s post-match comments. As critical as I am of Gomez at times, I have to say that I’m always impressed by the maturity and insight of his interview comments. This is a refreshing change from Podolski, who I am not sure is fluent in any language.
2) As I was watching Ribéry and Robben sprint side by side down for the third goal, it made me think of this tangentially related scene. We’ve got to come up with the right nickname for these guys. I’m not sure I like “Robbery”. Rib-Rob, which immediately reminds me of “Jib Jab” (but not enough to create an old-timey animation of Arjen and Franck), seems like it would catch on better with Germans at least. “7-10 split” seems like it could carry some weight. Please weigh in with your ideas guys, this is a creative group, and now is the time, before some annoying moniker we all hate takes hold.
3) The most encouraging thing is, I believe this match could have been won without Ribéry and Robben. We saw a lot more stability out of the defenders, Tymoschuck had one moment where he was too late getting back and allowed Dzeko a free header, but was otherwise solid. The difference yesterday was, we went from competent to stellar with our playmakers on the field.
4) Perhaps the only player on the field who didn’t improve over the Mainz match was Ivica Olic. And yet, you’d be really stretching things to say he had a bad day. He was adequate, nothing more, which was just fine on Saturday.
5) The once heir-apparent to the 10 jersey in Munich, Toni Kroos, had an assist on the game-winning goal for Leverkusen, just 6 minutes after coming into the match. Kroos has remained mostly in the background this season, he was subbed in after the 80th minute in the two previous league matches. Perhaps Saturday’s effort will see him increase his playing time, but following the Robben acquisition, it seems more likely that Kroos’ loan spell has a better chance of becoming permanent. Meanwhile, Bayern’s last #10 also played the part of hero in the dying seconds on Sunday.
6) Almost lost in the excitement of the victory was the goalkeeping change. Hans-Jörg Butt replaced Michael Rensing in goal, after playing in the mid-week friendly. At that time, I was convinced he was simply getting some playing time in a meaningless match, but LVG stated on the club’s website that he will go forward with Butt. Say what you will, about how much a good offense makes a good defense, but Butt kept a clean sheet against one of the fiercest attacks in the league. However, he might owe that to Philipp Lahm’s clearance off the line and well constructed posts as much as to his own performance.
7) Champions League Group A roundup: Maccabi Haifa overcame a deficit, scoring 3 goals in the last 23 minutes of the match for a 3-1 victory at Hapoel Raanana. Juventus has defeated AS Roma by the same count, and Marseilles hosted Bordeaux in a Ligue 1 showdown..which ended like so many of them do over there, 0-0.
8. Multiple sources have indicated that the Rafinha transfer rumor is dead. It seemed to be more than a rumor on Saturday, when Kicker broke the story. Rafinha would have been a much more logical transfer to have undertaken right when the window opened. You’ve got to wonder what those conversations with Magath are like on these topics, there’s got to be some interesting psychological dynamics.
9) Saturday was also a banner day for FC Bayern II. Mehmet Scholl and company got their first victory of the season, defeating recent DFB-Pokal opponent Wuppertaler SV, 3:1, surely to the chagrin of the entertaining proprietor of the Abseits Guide to German Soccer. Despite the Robben debut scheduled for just a couple hours later at the Allianz, 1,700 turned out at the Grünwalder.
10) I wasn’t looking on my calendar when I kept talking about “next week, next week”, as next week is an international week! Bayern will be back in action, September 12, at Dortmund, with a start time of 9:30 Eastern. As you look ahead on the schedule, the weekend of September 26-27 sees the club visiting Hamburg. Although not officially announced by the DFL yet, that match in Hamburg will almost surely be played on Sunday be played on Saturday at 12:30 EST. So, adjust your American college football watching schedule and other commitments accordingly!

Let’s hope its not Robbery or Ribben… (Ribben is Dutch for ribs so not sure that’d be a good idea) Though I haven’t thought of anything at the moment.

this is not good news. From Ribery’s comments, him and LvG already have a feud going. If they do not repair this relationship soon, there is really no way we will be able to keep Franck past next summer.

There’s no way they’re keeping him after this summer. Unless his knee explodes at the World Cup. You know, I tend to side with LVG in all this. How many times now has Ribery gone back and forth publicly on what he really wants? I always harp on it, but getting tossed out of the Schalke match last year made him lose credibility with me. He simply gave up in what was the most important match of the season at that time. You want things to be fun Franck? Try playing 30-40 more matches like Saturday, and I guarantee you’ll have some fun. Then in the summer time, you can tell your story walking..

I actually like Robbery (props to Big Soccer, do you post there by the way Luke?).
On Ribery:
At least the uncertainty, rampant media attention, and general annoyance is mainly past us. Ribery is here for a year and we get to enjoy the awesome Robben/Ribery spectacle for that long. I still think Ribery will for sure be on his way to Real Madrid after this season barring strange events like injury, Bayern winning CL, an odd World Cup, crazy stubborn-ness from Uli, etc. Then we can likely begin round 2 of prima donna saga with Robben taking over the mantle.I’ve been watching Elia at Hamburg a lot this season and hot diggity that kid can play. Not sure how realistic it would be to snatch him from Hamburg but I wouldn’t mind seeing a Ribery exit and then a huge bid for Elia.
All of this is pure speculation way off down the road. For now let’s all breathe a nice sigh of relief. We played excellent in beating Wolf 3-0. We have Ribery. We have Robben. We have a 4-3-3. Things are coming together after disaster against Mainz. Let’s hope none of our guys get injured on international break and get ready to put the hurt onto Dortmund.

Bayern might be the fifth biggest club in the world but since Ribery joined they have done nothing to indicate that they are translating that revenue and prestige into results in fact they struggled with clubs 1/10 of their size and failed in Europe. that is not the way to keep high profile players especially mercenaries like Ribery who have played in many teams, other than his contract he has no real ties to Bayern. Just as he moved to Bayern because Bayern is bigger than Marsille and would pay him more, he will move to Madrid or Barca from Bayern for the same reasons. the Bayern board will try everything to keep him because it is in their best interest to do so but its in Ribery’s best interest to leave so he at the very least wont renew his contract.

I’m actually not too concerned if Ribery stays (unlikely) or goes next summer (most likely)! Cause with Robben in the side, playing a 4-3-3 as indicated previously by John, Ribery will need to keep performing at a high level for Bayern over the next 12 months!
Cause comparisons with Robben will be made even by Madrid when weighing up their purchase options next season.
So if Robben can be wrapped up in cotten wool and remain relatively injury free, Ribery now has some form of competition in regards to capturing the crowds attention and imagination, not to mention the interest from scouts from other clubs?
It all could end up being quite healthy for Bayern, time will tell though?

As much as I admire Ribery, the constant stream of effluent emerging from the Spanish and French press is tiresome in the extreme. One can only imagine the effect this negativity is having on the harmony of the squad, and I for one would not be excessively saddened if his departure occurs in 2010. There are no straight replacements for Ribery, investment in balancing the squad would seem a more worthwhile endeavour.

I agree with Shane. Ribery has no choice but to play well, which will only help his cause if he seeks out a move after the WC. All the speculation will start again towards the end of the season, and through the WC, which will in turn unsettle France, assuming they make it (remember the Scolari saga?), so I really will not mind.
Cristiano Ronaldo was also subject to intense speculation, but he ended up having a pretty good season, and Man U did well, so if Van Gaal man-manages the team well, Bayern could do well too.
I will say this though, I don’t completely disagree with Ribery’s comment about “fun”. Besides the tactics and discipline, I think there should be something around that allows the team to break the ice. Van Gaal is known to be dour, so a little goofiness here and there might also help the team and his image.

How about that Lell? Dipshyt went AWOL and the team wasn’t able to offload him because of it. I can’t believe that he’d rather stay and not play AT ALL than go to another team and start.
