A quick update…
By: Angela | December 20th, 2008The CL draw has been released and Bayern have gotten Sporting Lisbon. At first glance, one wants to say fantastic, this is the best possible situation for the team, but at second glance, it leaves me weary. Bayern are notorious for not giving enough respect and laying back on their heels for the less competitive teams. It could be good, but it could also be very bad. We’ll see what happens.
Mark van Bommel and Ze Roberto are high on the priority list of re-signings. They’re trying to extend Ze’s contract by a year and there has been a new offer for Mark, but he has not made a decision. He will give them his answer after the winter break. However, some interesting teams (Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool for example) are all interested in my Captain, so we’ll have to see what happens there.
Bayern will be looking to get rid of Jose Ernesto Sosa for the time being. Saying he hasn’t established himself and they’re starting to lose patience with him at Bayern, they are looking at letting him go on loan in the winter break. There have been some inquiries and Bayern are exploring the options.
And in the meantime, Michael Rensing and the big guy are exchanging jabs. Unfortunately, on this one, I can’t say I’m too much on Rensing’s side.
That’s all I have for now. I hope you’re all enjoying the winter and have a great holiday season!

Seems like Ze is having a change of heart. If he stays, along with van Bommel, that would leave an embarassment of riches in midfield, which is not very good news for Kroos and Boro.
I agree with an old assessment of Rensing by Sepp Maier that he is too quick to punch the ball away. He is a decent shot stopper, but otherwise he seems to be what Claudio Taffarel was as the Brazil and Galatasaray netminder: A Vampire (because he could not handle crosses!). Hopefully he improves over time.
Enjoy the holidays everyone!

Rensing has not been that good so far… Yes, the defense has not been as good this year as it was last, however, even a 39 year old Kahn would have stopped at least half the shots Rensing has let in. In fact, since it’s the holidays, I’ll give my grades to the various units and maybe make this become a debate unless everyone agrees with me (Gasp, i hope not).
Forwards – C
Klose, Toni, and Podolski should have more goals with the talent they have. This grade would have been a D or D- a month ago. At least they improved the last quarter of the season.Midfield – A
This is the ONLY reason Bayern are where they are now. Ribery is looking more and more like one of the top 5 players in the world and has been mostly spectacular since coming back from the injury. The team has looked totally different since his return. Ze Roberto has been consistently good since the start of the season, and is possibly having his finest season yet. Shweinie has been good, though i do expect more out of him. Borowski has been great off the bench and doing anything the club asks with total professionalism. Van Bommel has been his consitent self and seems to be playing with less temper issues. All in all the midfield play has really shined this year, you can hardly ask for much more.Defense – C
Like the forwards, they have really raised their grade the last quarter. Lucio looked hurt the first half of the season and was out of position or just plain getting beat regularly the first half of the season. It just looked like the entire unit didn’t ‘get it’. DeMichelis is better than he has played. Lamm has been decent but also has more game than he has shown. Oddo has been a really solid pick up, though he does make his share of mistakes. DVB has been solid when asked to play.Goaltender – D
Would have been an F if not for the Hoffenheim and Lyon games. Even when he has made the stops, he looked shaky doing it. I think Kahn would still have been superior to him this year. Now, my best moments of the first half. First half of the Lyon game. Not so much that they played that great, but they made every chance count. The injury time goal versus Hoffenheim was really imprtant.
And the worst… The Werder game almost made me want to cry and even worse, blowing 2 goal leads against bottom feeders, Bochum and Monchengladbach. Giving up late goals has been a rather disturbing trend.
Anyway enough blabbering and happy holidays to all.

Roger: I completely agree on the midfield with the exception of Schweini. I am just not impressed at all with his performances. He has some good outings occasionally, but more often than not he seems to slide through a game playing very lax. The latter half of the season he has been better. Ze is brilliant. I can’t believe how his quality of ball progresses each time he plays. And as for Mark, I think he’s absolutely brilliant and the anchor of the team, but we all knew that already.
I am very disappointed in Rensing and only hope that the second half is MUCH better.

Roger, I disagree with your assessment on Michael Rensing and the defense. For one reason the defense have left Michael too exposed on far too many occasions. Two no matter who had followed Oliver Kahn they were always big shoes to fill. Three I think Rensing has improved especially in the last five games on the first half of the season as he has come to grips with being Bayerns No.1 shot stopper. Therefore I give him a ‘C+’. As for Lucio and Co in the centre of defense. Lucio gets an ‘F’, Demichelis ‘D’, and Van Buyten a ‘C’, and for the few occasions Breno has had the opportunity to play a ‘B’. Lahm and Oddo both get ‘B-’ ratings in my opinion.
For me the defense has conceded way too many goals especially when you cast your eye back on the Lyon 3-2 victory. We should never have given Lyon so much hope if the defense had worked as a tighter unit with better communication between them! Games against Bochum and Moenchengladbach are other examples where the defense has gone too sleep thinking a game was already won! Overall the defense is probably closer to a ‘D’ rating!Posted from

People, people, please lay off Rensing for a bit! come on, this is the guy’s first season as number 1, and he’s done a pretty good job so far. Anybody remember when Casillas was starting out? he took a 4-1 and 4-2 loss against Bayern! and look at him now! Just give Rensing some time. He needs a bit of experience. and take it from a former keeper: it is NEVER a good idea to diss a goalie. it only messes with his confidence which is THE most omportant thing for him. So please, give him some time and you’ll see he’ll be great.

Happy new year to all of my fellow fans.
May this one bring us a B2B domestic double ( which is definitely attainable) and at worst, a CL Semifinal.
Good on my team for ensuring that Schweini stays a few more years.
Let’s hope that Real or Manchester (either one) do not unsettle Ribery with wild transfer talk.
Lahm…. How about him or Klose as National Team Captain? The Baby Kaiser needs to go while we still have time. (Just Rambling on that one, I think there’s more qualified players on the team).
Summer transfers I think will be minimal depending on if we can keep the core team. Ze’ is a core member. Hopefully ZGod tells him to stay in Munchen.
Hope you all rock in the new year in a fitting way, and watch out if you’re on the road. Most Dnagerous night of the year.

Not to underestimate Sporting Lisbon, I reckon Bayern Munich should be able to go through to quarter-finale easily.
