Bayern 0 – 0 Bremen
By: Angela | March 1st, 2009
Today, Bayern are being hosted by Werder Bremen. Last match, Bremen took Bayern to school in a 5-1 victory at the Allianz Arena. Today, Bayern hope to do a little teaching of their own. The only question is, with the form they’ve had, will they be able to do it?
Werder almost go ahead at 4 minutes, but thanks to Ze Roberto, he clears the ball away and Bayern are given a corner taken by the Captain, Torsten Frings.
Bayern give a good shot from Franck Ribery and are given a corner. Nothing comes of it and Demichelis goes for a header but it’s whistled down. He takes off with the ball and gets a little scolding in which he responds like a little schoolgirl. I was waiting to see him kick the pitch and wriggle back and forth a little bit to match that smirk and the hands behind the back.
Diego makes a good effort for Bremen and takes it close to scoring, but when he sends in his cross, it’s hit away by Massimo Oddo. Bayern need to keep this man. Shortly after that Schweinsteiger takes a shot, but it sails wide.
Games between Werder and Bayern always seem to have a more aggressive tone to them. I always wait for someone to get seriously injured the way they play. I guess I’m not the only one who sees that now, Naldo was just awarded a straight red card, putting Werder down a man. Ribery takes the free kick and it goes straight to the keeper. Almeida has been substituted with Boenisch.
Oddo sets up a nice cross, but no one is there to capitalize on it and it’s cleared away. Bremen have been coming on strong and have had several good chances, but haven’t been able to capitalize on just yet.
A great setup from Roberto to Ribery and back to Roberto in which he picks up Borowski, but Boro’s shot is stopped by the keeper once more. Bayern come right back with another attempt, but it is taken away by Bremen. Bremen take it down the pitch, but Bayern take the ball back and start another attempt back to the goal. Ribery takes a shot, but it’s once again stopped. It seems as though this game is going to come down to whichever goal keeper messes up first.
Bremen would’ve had a chance right at the end of the first half, but they mess up a bit and Bayern clear it away just before the whistle is blown for the halftime break.
Podolski coms on in the second half for Bastian Schweinsteiger. I hope that he didn’t pick up some kind of injury from that hit by Naldo. Bremen didn’t make any changes for the second half. Podolski takes a shot just two minutes into the half, but it sails high over the posts.
Oddo has really put some nice crosses together but no one is ever there to pick it up. Ribery puts a nice shot up for Podolski and he screws up and kicks it pretty much back the way it came instead of to the goal. For someone who wants more playing time, he sure doesn’t play like that.
You can sort of tell that Mark is Miro’s best friend these days. Miro seems to be taking a couple pages out of the old van Bommel play book and has been quite the aggressor in some instances. Mark must be so proud of him.
The keepers for this game have been absolutely brilliant. I wish Rensing would play like this every match. van Bommel has had a very good game as well, but that usually goes unnoticed by everyone except me. That’s okay though, I have a lot of love for the Captain.
There have been some wasted opportunities by both teams and neither have been able to find the back of the net with 70 minutes gone. Mark van Bommel just received a yellow card which means he’ll have to sit out the next match against Hannover 96 at home. That was his fifth yellow card. I don’t agree with the card since some of the stuff that has been pulled has been much worse and hasn’t been carded.
Pizarro had a good chance to score with Rensing nowhereto be found, but he blew it. Ze Roberto had a brilliant chance, but Vander is there once more. Battle of the goal keepers. It’s been a good give and go by both sides. Lot’s of back and forth action currently. 75 minutes in and Landon Donovan comes on for Hamit Altintop. Oddo made a nice shot on goal, but once again Vander is there to stop it. 77 allows Andreas Ottl to come on for Tim Borowski.
Podolski isn’t doing himself any favors this game. He really isn’t playing well and there is no reason for Bayern to do anything but keep him on the bench until he leaves for Cologne. He very clearly doesn’t have the desire to play regularly for this team.
The game ended with no extra time added on and the teams walking away with a draw. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t normally watch Bremen play so I don’t know how they usually play. To me, whenever they play against Bayern it always seems very aggressive, but not in a positive way. I’m always under the impression that they are out to hurt players. I don’t like that. Bayern almost need to throw Lell in and let him throw some punches as well, but that wouldn’t make me happy either.
Great game by both Rensing and Vander. They earned their money today. Someone that watches Bremen regularly, can you tell me why Vander doesn’t play all the time and Wiese does because I have never been impressed with Wiese.

Angela, what are you thoughts on Bayern keeping ahold of Donovan now that his time is winding down? I think if Donovan had been able to score a goal in any of these games, he’d be offered something. But since he hasn’t, it doesn’t look good. I find that disappointing, because it would’ve been really neat to have a major American player bringing attention to soccer in general and Bayern in particular. *sigh*
It does seem Bremen always play Bayern to injure them. When it comes to Bayern, the Bremen fans I’ve talked to seem to have a collective chip on their shoulders…

Juliet – In all honesty, I had great hope for Landon when he joined Bayern, but I have been very disappointed in his play. There seems to be a reason that American players don’t really bode well in Europe… they just don’t play at the same level. It’s a very different style of play and I don’t think that he has given Bayern any reason to try and keep him. However, Klinsmann seems to be a big fan of his so who knows what will happen. I’m not a very big fan of Klinsmann these days so I will stop there.
I agree. I don’t get it, but then again, I have the pleasure of being removed from such drama being in the states.
I’ve just noticed that they always seem to want to physically hurt someone and I didn’t know if that was their style of play or just how they approach Bayern.Posted from

I saw the Milan – Bremen match and also a few other of their matches this season. They certainly don’t play an aggressive-out-to-hurt people football. But against Bayern they probably also want to make a statement that Bayern can’t just come and play their football like they want to.
I think Donovan came at the wrong time. The winter break was very positive for Bayern. They won all their matches, Donovan scored the odd goal and then they demolished Stuttgart in the Cup. Had their season continued like that then Donovan would have had a much better chance to secure a permanent deal. It’s much easier to come into an intact team and perform up to your potential. But the season took a different direction. Players were/are bitching about tactics, each other and the coach. Players weren’t playing up to their potential. And now Donovan had to prove himself in such an environment.
Anyway, Bayern take quite the gamble with their strikers this season. Donovan will be gone soon and Podolski doesn’t look like he is particularly motivated to prove something to anyone at Bayern anymore. Which means, Bayern is in a position where they have to play in a system with one striker, when Toni is injured. Bayern can be happy that Klose isn’t injury prone…

Just some random thoughts:
*At least Naldo waited a few more minutes before unleashing a dirty move (you’ll recall his “welcome back to Bremen” hack on Klose last season in about the 2nd minute). But the red card helped Bremen. Any reason for Bayern to ease up is enough. Apparently getting humiliated at home on the last day of Oktoberfest no less AND a man advantage for 75 minutes are just not enough motivation when you are dreaming of Los Angeles or Köln or Barcelona as the case may be. I remember Bayern teams that would have been merciless in this scenario. No longer.
*Has the though crossed your mind that Jogi was the genius for the national team all along? Or, are we going down this same road with Klinsmann, where just when you are ready to say that the guy doesn’t know what he’s doing, he produces a triumph?
*Is it too late for a contest to add a fan to the squad and give him #11? They ought to send Poldi home now, or let him ride to lovely places like Burghausen with the amateurs. What a waste of space.
*Rensing has made it through 2 consecutive matches without a blunder. Expect one against Leverkusen.
*Bayern’s offense is like playing basketball with a kid who only knows how to dribble with one hand. No matter how much you overplay to that side, the kid stays with the strong hand and can’t find an opening. For Bayern, it’s the left, as nothing creative is even attempted on the right.

No, ever since Euro 2008 (and with the benefit of hindsight also the months before the tournament) and everything that followed, the thought and common misconception that Jogi was the genius behind 2006 never crossed my mind again.
But the two probably just complemented each other very well.

I think the Donovan is just not up to snuff, especially in big matches. I remember watching (unfortunately absolutely nothing else was on TV that day) LA versus some other team, where Donovan one-on-one with the GK managed to go round him and then proceed to completely mishit the tap-in allowing a defender to clear. For the rest of the match, he was being fed enough passes for even Pippo Inzaghi to remain onside with and score, but alas.
Ever since, I’ve had no faith in Landon Donovan. So far I’ve been proved correct.
As for Klinsi, I think the Martin Vasquez experiment is the problem. I’m assuming the same hierarchy as with the Nationalelf, with the assistant coach setting up the tactics. I’m not railing on Vasquez because he’s north american, but tactically, he’s not up there. Bayern’s still in the same formation as last season and the only difference is an attempt to force the pace. All other formations have ended up with disaster. That along with the simple plan opponents have to hang back and hit on the counter. At that point the CB’s have no idea what to do!
The 4-5-1 worked for a while against Bremen, but it led to the midfielders breaking, not Klose (maybe once?). I’ll give Klinsi the benefit for now, but Vasquez has to go.

Nick, I am with Jan on Jogi. Whatever happened at Euro 2008 had made me changed my opinion on the Bundestrainer – forever. He is not going to get sympathy points from me unless I see something improve with the national team during the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Mini rant over.

A Kap is hitting on more of what I was trying to get at. As an assistant, Jogi had been a coach in the league and knew how to tactically prepare a side for matches every 3 days. The N. American contingent on Bayern’s staff simply don’t have that experience. I know, JK is trying to do something new and revolutionary (at least he thinks so), but maybe it’s time to admit he needs an old German hand assisting.

Luke: I’m wondering how the numbering system works in the Bundesliga and if Klose will be able to adopt the 11 once Poldi is gone.. I don’t know exactly how that works.
As for Klinsmann… I’m not a fan of his as a coach and never was so I’m more frustrated by all of this than anything. I don’t understand the hype. But then again, I’m fairly new (a few years) to the whole thing.

Well TWO MORE Lucio clangers have led to Bayern being dethroned and losing their DFB Cup crown! How many more blunders do we allow Lucio to make before he his answerable to the fans and club hierarchy? Klinsi needs to bench him like Beckham!!!!!

I didn’t see this game because I was working, but I am so tired of the 83rd minute substitutions of Lucio. I am so sick of seeing him screw up all the time. I have never been a fan, but this is getting downright ridiculous.
