Bayern 1 - 2 Anderlecht

By: Angela | March 12th, 2008

Bayern's second choice Keeper, Michael RensingBayern saw a loss against Anderlecht today, but still advance in the UEFA Cup. Both teams were pretty aggressive and it was clear from the start that Bayern weren’t going to lay back on their feet and let Anderlecht walk away with a win. There was, however, some very sloppy play by Bayern and particularly, Breno. I am not impressed. Again, I’d like to ask where the former Willy Sagnol is because he seems to make a lot of mistakes these days too. By rights, the two goals that Anderlecht scored should never have got past Rensing.

Something happened during the second half and Anderlecht came out strong and hungry. They were not about to go down without a fight, and fight did they. Franck Ribery couldn’t even capitalize. Anderlecht also had to change their keeper as Zitka picked up an injury in the first half so Schollen came on and had a strong second half. Bayern took a loss, but will be seen through on a 6-2 aggregate. And while he didn’t have a spectacular game, I give it up to Lukas Podolski who played through a fever and an ear infection.

Below is a break down of yellow cards as they were awarded and goals.
// (9′) Lucio, (20′) Serhat, (35′) Iakovenko
// (7′) Juhász, (42′) Iakovenko, (52′) Deschacht, (90′) Boussoufa

    You can’t expect Breno to look like he should be playing in the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup-the fact is, a meaningless match was the moment he’d get a chance, and this was it. Ribery just can’t sit still for 90 min when there’s a match going on, can he? Maybe he can take a half off in Cottbus. I don’t know, how long was Sagnol out, 9 months? I think it will take that long for him to round back into shape. Overall, Bayern played with a flatness commensurate to the occasion.

    Luke: I guess I can’t understand why they bought Breno -now- when there is really no use for him, unless, as you said, its in a meaningless match. Why spend money on people who will only get the chance to play when it’s just a nothing game for the team? Ribery I don’t think could sit still if you asked him to. The announcers on Gol were talking about how fit he is and when he was warming up in the first half that he probably just wanted to get some cardio in since he wasn’t playing. ;)
    I haven’t given up on Willy just yet. I know what he is capable of. And he’s still trying to get back into the rhythm of playing regularly, which he really hasn’t done yet either.
    In the second half, it was very much going through the motions for Bayern. There’s no denying that.

    Well, it was now or never, with all the big clubs lining up to sign Breno–he’s a top prospect. Lucio is under contract until 2010, at which time he’ll be 32, so one can clearly see Breno being groomed to take that spot. So between now and August 2010, that’s a lot of time for him to develop, and even then he’ll only be 20. Theoretically, in that 2010-11 season you’ll have both Breno and Hummels ready to contribute as central defenders–Bayern seems to be following the route they took with Lahm and Lell in developing Hummels, but it remains to be seen how they will handle Breno.

    I agree with Luke (sorry Angela), Breno is just starting and buying him now was a gr8 move from Hoeness because he will be the future Lucio…..Hummels has also gr8 potential for the future….i think this season is very important for the next 5 years for Bayern…..we are now setting up a team that will be together for long time which is very very good……Rensing will be the next No. 1, Breno and Hummels will be the future central defenders along with Lell,Jansen and Lahm (if he stays) on the defensive wings…..in the center there is Ottl (a gr8 defensive midfielder) who will replace Van Bommel and we have Kroos who should be playing the same position as Ballack (when he was @ Bayern) and we have Sosa who is a gr8 right winger in the midfield and Ribery and Schweiny……in the attack we have Poldi and Klose and Schlaudraff for the future plus we can buy a new foreign striker to replace Toni when he retires……..

    Bilal: Don’t apologize :) I welcome all opinions as long as we can discuss them like adults without attacking one another and we’ve all done that very well here.

    Hummels is out on loan to the BVB and I am not certain that he will be back.

    Breno wins no points with me for being compared to Lucio… I see a lot of mistakes in Lucio and I am just not a fan…. again, that’s just me ;)

    Schweinsteiger needs to get himself together. His form has been most unimpressive as of late and if he continues to perform badly, I am unsure where that will leave him for Bayern.

    van Bommel will likely finish out his career at Bayern, but we will need someone to step in and take his place when he’s gone. Ottl does okay, but he has a lot of room for improvement. The thing going for him is that he’s young and he’s only just starting to blossom as a player.

    The combination of Klose and Podolski was a magnificent one for the WC so I am hoping that signing of Klinsmann will mean a return to form for Lukas and more playing time for him when he gets a little more of his confidence back.
