Bayern 7 – 1 Sporting Lisbon

By: Angela | March 10th, 2009

This was an interesting match for me because the only stream I was able to get open had absolutely no sound. Bayern routed Lisbon in a 7-1 defeat today. Goals were scored by Lukas Podolski (x2), an own goal by Polga, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mark van Bommel, Miroslav Klose and Thomas Müller.

van Buyten made the start alongside Lucio, Lell got the start in place of Oddo. Hans Jorg Butt also made the start in goal. He looked good. At the half Lucio was taken off for Breno. I haven’t seen a lot of Breno, but to me he plays a little far up in the midfield rather than holding the back line. It seemed like he and Andreas Ottl swapped places quite a few times. I would like to see a bit more of Müller.

The game itself wasn’t all that impressive to me. There were a couple sloppy mistakes on both teams parts. While the score doesn’t reflect that, you’d think Bayern had a great game, but I’m still not entirely happy with the way they’re playing. And I know I’m absurdly biased, but the goal by van Bommel was impressive and I was completely certain there was no way it was going in. Color me surprised and pleased.

Podolski… I’m still really confused about. He plays well when he wants to. Like the beginning of this match. Then he disappears for awhile and you forget all about him and what a good player he can be when he wants to be. Then he shows up again later. He took a boot to the thigh near the end of the match and went off the pitch for a few minutes. He came back on but continued to limp and was still limping post game so here’s hoping he didn’t pick up a major injury. Bayern can’t really afford any more striker injuries.

Schweini had another decent game. A couple players seem to have come on form. It would just be nice if the rest of the team would catch up and they’d start playing the great football they are capable of. It’s funny how a team full of top stars plays like they’ve never seen a football the majority of the time. No team cohesion these days. The CL is where Bayern excel. Here’s hoping they can carry it on into the Bundesliga matches as well.

12-1 aggregrate win, absolutely insane!!!!! Could not have even dreamed of a better result than this, awesome!!! Even Podolski managed to find some form,
and better still no mistakes from the hapless Lucio in the 45 minutes he played which was even more of a surprise to me than anything else!!! Wow, what a game!!

The whole 12-1 aggregate was insane indeed. Some of those goals were insane as well. That goal by van Bommel I was certain wasn’t going to end well, but man did he prove me wrong. Good for him.

mark’s goal was incredible! what brilliant control – that’s something that SHOULD be replayed on football highlight shows, but won’t be because nobody here seems to care about bayern in the CL…

Bayern seems to be the counterpoint to Liverpool this season. Similar woes in the League, but playing pretty well in the UCL.

Except of course ‘Pool is defensive and extremely dour (today’s match excepted) while Bayern really has 4 players playing behind the midfielders who I can’t really call defenders.

I was happy to see the juniors get a chance and Mueller actually do well. That run was pretty darn good.

Here’s hoping for a favorable draw next week! Looks like Bayern’s going to play an island club…

And Angela, Bayern’s website had live webradio, so you could have played that except of course for the synching trouble.

jamie: I agree completely. It was an amazing goal. I was very pleased with it considering he’s my favorite player. :)

A Kap: I wasn’t aware of the live webradio. I will have to keep an eye out for that in the future. I don’t know what it is, but I hope they can carry the CL momentum into the BuLi with them. However, I am doubtful.

I was very impressed with young Mr. Müller and would like to see more of him. He definitely deserves it after today’s performance. Still not happy with Lell and I am glad to see that Demichelis got sat out because he has been making some critical mistakes as of late. However, his mitakes pale in comparison to Lucio, who surprising didn’t slip up in the 45 minutes of play time he was allowed. That was probably the most surprising thing to me today. ;)

Yes Angela, Marc Van Bommel’s goal was truly amazing today, and I agree with Jamie’s comment! Unfortunately in Australia we have the hideous SBS TV Channel, who are run by the pro-Italian Les Murray and his clueless side kick analyst Craig Foster! Both of whom clearly hate Bayern, and I dislike them of course too, because of that fact!! They never have a nice word to say about Bayern!! Even when we turn on the style like this morning!!!

to win 7-1 without Ribery and Toni is a great resault and will give a much needed boost to the team,I hope they will carry this form with them to the league.

it was nice to see Poldi score again this week .

nice to see both Poldi and Schweini score for Bayern.
Schweini played very well on the left and better when Ribery was absent.
hope Bayern bring this form to Bundesliga.
will be very happy if Poldi scores again.

Poldi’s second goal was quite spectacular too though it was a huge defensive error… that bicycle kick was quite spectacular. It’s hard to say anything bad about a 7-1 game except maybe we gave up a goal…lol Here’s mud in the eye for all those who think Bayern can’t play without Ribery. 12 goals in the last 2 games without him is pretty spectacular. Bayern’s schedule in the Bundesliga gets quite easy for awhile now, so if we can beat up on all the bottom feeders, we should be able to catch and pass Hertha unless they keep getting lucky. However, as we Americans know, Hertha is like the Chicago Cubs of the Bundesliga. Choke and gag the few times they get in position to do something. I am most worried about Wolfsburg than anyone right now. Good players playing great right now.

Hoping Bayern draws either Porto, Villareal or Arsenal for the next round. Hoping they don’t draw Barcelona or Manchester United for obvious reasons. Liverpool and Chelsea would be a difficult draw also. There are no real pushovers here now, but I feel the first three teams are lower quality than Bayern, player to player.

The Klose injury is enormous. A lot of the season now hinges on Podolski who has never been loved by Bayern and is leaving in the summer.

I’m ambiguous about signing Van Bommel to a year extension. He’s good, but Tymoschuk is better and should be starting. Van Bommel will resent riding the bench which will cause tension and it having a negative impact on the locker room.

The Hanover and Bochum wins were really important and impressive. We were missing key players and using a hodge-podge lineup (Demichelis at midfield is laughable) and still came out with convincing wins when the pressure was on. We’re fortunate to have a cake schedule while Toni, Ribery, Altintop and Borowski recover, but hopefully they are fit soon because after Karlsruhe we get a massive game against Wolfsburg and then CL quarters.

This is a fun year. Can’t wait for the next 2 months.

How about that drawing!? FCB VS the other FCB. SHould be a good game. The away leg first helps, we just need a goal. Hopefully we can do that and as much as I hate it, defends with 11 men at home. Following that, odds are we play Liverpool, however an upset would be breathtaking.

Well as the seasons start the final leg things get real as we yanks like to say.

At least Barcelona is not playing particularly well since January. We’ll need to be at our best for those games. Really need Ribery and Toni back. I’d much rather be without Toni than Klose, but we have no choice in that. Let’s hope we get the best out of Poldi, and he decides he has to show Bayern what they are losing and plays his heart out like he is capable of. I guess we can take solace that at least we didn’t draw Man U, though man for man, Barcelona has more talent than anyone… The best I can say here is at least their goalie is not up to the standard of the rest of the team. Kind of like Rensing… lot’s of talent but 0 confidence and sometimes have to wonder if his head is in the game. If there were ever a time for Rensing to get the team behind him, this would be it. Otherwise you may see Bayern shopping for a keeper during the summer transfer period.

@Tajh The way the goalies have played, we may see two very high scoring shootouts… I’ve watched a lot of Barca cames and I just absolutely love watching Lionel Messi play. He is at the least one of the top 5 players in the world and is a joy to watch though I can’t wish him too much luck, as I would love to see us advance. :P
Would have rather seen you guys in the final where we only have to play you once. :P
