Bayern bids a legend Farewell
By: Angela | March 11th, 2008
It’s official. Oliver Kahn will step down as Bayern’s keeper and retire from football this year. The announcement came today from Bayern’s director Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Among his achievements, Kahn was voted the best player of the World Cup in 2002, seven German championships, five German cups, the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup. He was also the first choice keeper for Germany’s National Team from 1994 until 2006 where Jens Lehmann took over. His last professional game will be played on May 27th in India. In September, Bayern will honor him with a game at the Olympiastadion where Bayern will take on the German National Team. Which should be interesting considering a lot of the line up for the NT currently plays for the FCB.
His character, passion, anger, and personality will be missed.

‘Which should be interesting considering a lot of the line up for the NT currently plays for the FCB.’
I was thinking the same thing too, Angela.
Ahh…still remembered when was the time I first heard of his name. The 2002 World Cup. He and Michael Ballack were the two most prominent names on the German national team for me then. But then again, I only first took notice of the NT back then and those two names just stood out for me for some reason.

Diana: It will be interesting to see how he arrange the lines with so many players being at FCB. Also, it will be interesting to see who leaves in the summer and if any of those players are part of the NT. I look for Klinsi to hang on to as many as possible though.
Harriet: He’s definitely earned his due as a keeper. He’s still very impressive at times and I am certain he will be missed. Even though we have a very capable #2.

Until they teach a baboon to play GK, there will never be another like him.
Seriously Olli, you’re a treasure and will be sorely missed.
