Bayern loses to Inter

By: Angela | August 5th, 2008

Mark maintains the pre-season Captaincy.Well that was a somewhat dismal game. I was expecting a lot more from this match-up and my expectations were sorely disappointed by the lack of exciting play by both teams. The keeper for Inter really was great though. Rensing had some great moments. Lucio had some rather… Lucio moments. Neither team seemed that motivated to win, which I suppose is what happens when it’s just a pre-season friendly, but I had hoped to see a little bit more sparkle from both teams in this matchup. van Bommel came out with flare and ended up hurting one of Inter’s players. He apologized a lot and got pet in return, but really, who are we kidding, this is how Mark plays and one of the many reasons I love him.

Currently, there is no selection for Captain and I try to be objective as I watch the game and see who will make a good Captain and I really don’t see anyone showing the type of leadership and direction that Mark does. He’s been the captain for all of the pre-season matches. The only other people that have worn the armband are Demichelis and Lucio, but only when Mark was off the pitch. I wonder if that means he will be the next Captain. I don’t know if Klinsmann cares or not, but it has to mean something to someone that Oliver Kahn said he’d make a great Captain. Doesn’t it?

Daniel gets bum rushed...Did you notice that Willy Sagnol wasn’t in the lineup? He’s injured again. I’m starting to wonder why we keep him when we won’t play him anyhow and when he’s afforded an opportunity he’s injured anyways. It’s sad because he use to be a class player and I hate to see his career end this way, but it’s time to hang it up. And here I go disappointing you all, but I’m sometimes convinced that Lukas Podolski plays poorly in certain matches on purpose. I thought that against Cologne and he only proved my point by scoring twice in the last match, but getting credit for three. Then he came back today and was pretty non-existant in what I seen. Did Schweinsteiger even play this match?

The funniest thing about that question is that for about the first forty minutes, the commentators on the stream I was watching kept on calling Christian Lell, Schweinsteiger. It wasn’t until about forty minutes into the match that he had discovered he was calling Lell wrong and corrected himself. What’s worse is he read the starting line at the beginning of the match. Perhaps he read Lellsteiger instead? ;)

Mark tries for the ballLuca Toni, Tim Borowski and Franck Ribéry were all in the stands. Probably severly disappointed that they couldn’t be on the pitch to help out their team. Ribéry, at one point, looked like he was trying to find a quick exit from the arena. I am looking forward to his comeback. Toni will be out for a couple more games. The bright spot was Kroos. The first formation gave Lell and Lahm a lot of opportunity but that came to an end when Demichelis had to come off early. Lucio’s loss of the ball was the point above for the Lucio being… Lucio. I can not stand when he plays like this.

The pace wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been and in the latter half of the second half, Bayern picked up their possession dominance, but it was a little late and you have to give credit where credit is due, Inter’s keeper made some great saves when we were on target.

Overall, I wasn’t completely pleased with the match, but I wasn’t as disappointed as I’ve been in previous pre-season friendlies. And well, when I got a little upset by the performance Captain Mark was there to save my day. :D

    Bah!
Bayern are my favorite Bundisliga team.
Inter my most hated team ever.
    Should have destroyed them.
Or broken their legs to sabotage them in the upcoming Serie A season…

Toldo was spot on today. I fully support Inter but I was not expecting a win today. I think Bayern was jetlagged from Japan and you were clearly missing some of your key players. Oh, Inter also made like 4 more substitutions than Bayern.

We will see you again in the Champions League. Everyone will be well and in-form. Then we will have a true game!

Hey pal, I know it’s a defeat for your team but how about giving the score and the goal scorer ?

Because I didn’t see the goal and I don’t know the Milan team. I figured Johonna would have it on the Inter blog.

Johonna, you are right, we were missing some players and jet lag could be a factor, but I expected a bigger performance today. Not as bad as it could’ve been, but still not what I was hoping for. :)

Pretty much agree with the match analysis. I also was a bit perplexed by the Lell/Schweini mix up b/c I missed the starting line ups and on the little computer feed couldn’t make out the players too well.

For some reason this game really bothered me since it comes so close to the start of the season and we looked totally lackluster. We haven’t made any real transfers or changes to the line-up this off-season. Borowski is something but not much for an already crowded midfield where he will see limited time. And I’m just not confident in this team going deep in Champions League and that’s compounded by an unimpressive preseason where we look like the same old flawed Bayern.

These players have a tendency for mental lapses and spells of indifference that really hurt us. Yes, we’re certainly strong enough to repeat as Bundesliga champs and probably the DFB, but I think when we’re really tested by the strongest teams in Europe in the knock-stage and even Group Stage our weakness is going to show. Maybe Klinsmann can kick our motivation into gear by then. I hope so.

Shane: I agree. I hope that things will look better when the season comes. We definitely little a little help. The strikers haven’t been strikers. Podolski only shined in one game and I swear he is on a strike or purposely plays bad. I know I won’t win any fans by saying that, but it’s the way I feel currently.

Hopefully things will shape up quickly once the season starts.

I only had the highlights to go off of, but fairly unremarkable. I say, look at this compared to the drubbing they took at the Nou Camp in the Beckenbauer Cup two seasons ago. That match against Barca was *awful* and it really was a preview of the lackluster season to come, despite the relative success in the Champions League. Here, you can’t really say Bayern was vastly outplayed. From what I could see Inter camped out in back quite a bit–this is not the type of match where Podolski will succeed. Before any of us climbs out on the ledge, let’s remember this new brain trust is focused on success in Europe, and that will mean peaking in March and April. I actually won’t be surprised if they drop the Pokal match, for the same reason.

I was also confused with the Lell/Schweinsteiger mixed up–it’s bad enough I was watching it with a half-awake mind at 2.30 am in the morning–and pixelized, courtesy of TVU. But it seems as if it doesn’t matter whether people realise Schweini was there or not since he seemed pretty invisible anyway.

The only two things I like about this match is Kroos and that little moment in the second half when Bayern picked up the pace and looked offensive enough as if they were about to score an equalizer.

And was the referee quite… bleargh? I thought there were a few moments when he could have awarded Bayern a free kick here and there…

My bad. Schweini’s down with the flu bug apparently. So it WAS Lell.

Yeah it was Lell, but the announcers called him Schweinsteiger for about 40 minutes. Then they figured out it wasn’t Schweini. What’s worse is he read the starting line which clearly had Lell and not Schweini in it.

I agree about Kroos being a good thing in this match. It’s why I said he was the highlight, though the girl in me says the highlight of the match was a very shirtless van Buyten at the end of the match. ;)

shirtless?! Damn transmission ended before anybody could strip. -_- (btw, does miro believe in exchanging jerseys with the opponents? I swear, a topless picture of him is as elusive as a giant squid!)

Lynn: Yeah, Daniel was exchanging shirts, but it took him a little bit to put the other one on. Since he is right up there or pretty close in second with Mark for me, I was pleased. ;)

Miro does exchange jerseys, but the problem with Miro is the same one that Arne Friedrich fans face, he typically wears an undershirt. I might have an old shirtless one of him that I could dig up for you. ;)

Inter played very negative football which kinda spoiled the entertainment side of the match… after inter scored and put everybody behind the ball… Bayern quickly lost interest in trying to break down Inter’s defense but i guess with a competitive match on Sunday they could not waste their energy. I think this match should not be taken as an indication of what will happen in the coming season because Bayern had no great desire to dominate and win this match and neither did Inter.
