Bayern Munich 4 – 1 Hertha Berlin

By: Angela | August 31st, 2008

Now that, my friends, is how you play football. Some changes to the line and whatever Klinsmann thought up, seemed to work brilliantly. For all you nay sayers out there, this is why I blame Lucio for not being enough support for van Buyten. van Buyten had a brilliant game today. He was able to push forward, he was able to defend like he’s capable, he took shots on goal and didn’t lay back at all. And all of that is likely because he has more confidence in Demichelis than he does Lucio. Very good game overall by the majority of the team. There are still some flaws, but this performance was better than previous ones.

The penalty that Schweinsteiger received probably wasn’t waranted of a penalty shot, but it happened none the less. Ze Roberto was definitely man of the match with some shining performances by Lahm, Ottl and van Buyten.

Ribery in the stands with his family was adorable, but you can tell that he is missing the game. Mark all alone in the stands being pouty broke my heart. I can’t wait for my Captain to come back. Hertha never really adjusted their line to meet the adjustments Klinsmann made and it gave Bayern too much room. They used it to their advantage and took home a 4-1 win over Hertha.

My amusement came from the announcers calling van Buyten a big lighthouse. The names that they come up with for some of these players is highly entertaining. He looked good today. Lahm was fantastic, glimpses of the world cup player that I was so fond of.

There was a moment when Demichelis and Lucio seemed to fall asleep and were caught too far up which allowed for Pantelic to make a break and score Hertha’s only goal. van Buyten nearly caught him, but not quite. Pantelic is a quick little man. Friedrich was awarded a yellow for bringing down Ze Roberto rather harshly… see it’s not just Bayern’s Captain that gets yellows. ;) The yellow to Friedrich awarded Bayern with their second penalty shot which was taken by Klose. He found the back of the net and has finally managed to score. Good for him.

Goals were scored by Toni, Schweinsteiger (penalty), Lahm and Klose (penalty). Klose tried his little heart out, but today just wasn’t his day. He’s getting closer and sooner or later his good run of bad luck just has to break. I’m glad he was given the opportunity to take the penalty and I’m glad that he scored.

Overall, today’s game was a vast improvement from previous games and hopefully this will give the team the momentum they need to keep moving forward. Bayern remains undefeated with Rensing in goal. That’s a positive right?

I’m not going to have a lot of analysis, because I had to watch a fuzzy online feed, but I feel that Demichelis’ stabilizing force was really felt here today.. I’m not sure this formation will work against a faster overall team, but it was sufficient today. Toni seems to have rounded into form, Schweini was able to attack creatively, and Ze Roberto showed again why he was a bigger loss than Ballack 2 seasons ago. I can’t see them losing next week, worst outcome would be a frustrating 0-0. The possibilities become more exciting as players come back, and I’m hoping to see more of Sosa next week.

It was a fun game to watch, Goal-Orama. I really hope that this is a start for things to come, ’cause right now we have to keep winning while those at the top of the table fall to the wayside.

Rensing I think will blossom soon. He has a good eye and so far his record of no losses in the bundesliga stands. Let’s hope he can maintain that.

Klose, he tried so damn hard today, I really wanted him to get that goal that he lost on the followup. He’ll get back in form soon. I just think that he’s too unselfish

Poldi, he’s out there huffing, but I’m not sure that he will ever get his groove on like he did at Koln. He just doesn’t get the adoration in Munich and I thnk he thrives on that.

Schweini did have a greaty showing, isn’t it funny how he has an indignant irritated look on his face when he inititially scores?

Micho, we all weclomed his return and he hasn’t really lost a beat, he IS the heart of the midfield and it shows.

Lahm… I met him when I stopped by Sebner Strasse, he’s all class, and his shot into the net reminded me too of his WM06 opener.

Ze, I think you’re right about how key he is there. He’s a playmaker.

I cannot wait for Oddo to take over for Lell, I just don’t get him. Lahm can play both sides, why couldn’t they have flipped Lahm and Jansen and drop Lell? I’m still pissed about Jansen being released

Conversely, Freidrich of Berlin ( I know, but I’m a DFB fan also), he deserves a better team! Despite his penalty box foul he is a great player.

Just wanted to say that this page is great! Nice to see fellow Americans that appreciate “the world sport”

One thing I’ll say about Klinsmann is that he learns from his mistakes and makes adjustments. the stiff useless static Zone defense that saw Bayerns defenders draped across the box like decorations, was gotten rid of after it failed in the last two games. Bayern’s switch to a more Pragmatic Man marking system were Demichelis was allowed to do what he does best which is chase down players and tackle them that gave van Buyten the cover he needs to compensate for his lack of pace and allowed Lucio to push forward much more. Klinsmann also stoped his practice of trying to get Bayern to push as far up the field as possible, which failed against Hamburg and was already being revised against Dortmund. but the biggest and most important change of all was Klinsmann’s giving up on trying to get Bayern to attack as quickly as possible which was useless against Hamburg and Dortmund. Today in the second half Bayern played their slowest and most patient football so far and it worked! it allowed Bayerns players to get into position and it lured Hertha’s players out of position by making them fallow the ball. this is a step in the right direction but Bayern still have a long way to go. the first half was far too evenly matched with Bayern lacking creativity and only Tony standing out, when the first half ended it looked as if the match would end 1:0.

jocamryn: I agree completely about Friedrich. He is a class player. He is one of my favorites on the National Team. Like you, I would’ve rather seen Lell gone than Jansen. I guess his unhappiness is a factor though.

    That match made my day.

I’m really happy for Klose and hope he starts scoring amazing headers like he used to always do.

And I agree, without doubt Ze Roberto was the man of the match. Demichelis wasn’t bad at all except the moment where the ball got snapped and Herta scored, he shouldn’t be playing the attacking libro role all match.

MacaholiQ8: Ze Roberto is the anchor of the team sometimes. Yesterday’s match was proof of that. He was incredible. He is great.

I hope that the Klose penalty was enough to give him some confidence, end some of his frustration and get him back on scoring track.

I hope this good form will not only last but continue improving! (: and I’m so so so happy for Klose–even I was getting super frustrated with him. It was sad that even though he tried again and again it seemed like it wasn’t going his way, but it was so nice of Schweini to give him the penalty (I thought Miro looked unconfident and needed to be persuaded to take it?)!
The most exciting thing is how creative the midfield is with Schweini and Ze Roberto and imagine if Ribery’s back in the mix (:

yeah, i agree, Arne Friedrich is one of the better German defenders out there who are stick with a mid-level team. I even think he’s better than Metzelder.

All in all, Bayern were good. I say good because we were not yet at that level which we started the first three games of last season..our goal difference was 10-0… with a 4-0 hammering of Bremen AWAY. I hope we do that against Koln and Bremen. Poldi to play more against Koln. Miro to score against Bremen…a couple of reuniting games… and there’s that Bayern-Fiorentina game.

Lynn: I agree about Klose appearing to need talked into it, but I am glad that he took it. I think it’s a step in the right direction for his confidence. He completely fooled the keeper.

munichred: I don’t know about Poldi playing more against Cologne. He doesn’t play his best against teams of his heart and some of the performances that he’s given against teams like that, I don’t know that I’d play him more. I just don’t trust him sometimes.

….If only we could get Arne… But then where would he fit?

Read old Bild Sport tonight, still frustrated over the Jansen loss.

Didn’t see the Game last night, even though it was friendly how did Oddo look? No writeup?

How does one get GolTV in english? Seems like my Package (Cox) only has the spanish version of GolTV. I don’t really mind listening in spanish but I wish I could hear the sweet antcs of Ray Hudson instead.

Shane: I have it both Spanish and English. It comes with my package, but I have DirecTV. If you don’t want to go that route, there is no need. You can install a little program called TVU Player on your computer and it offers GolTV in English as one of their channels. You could stream it that way if you wanted to hear Ray. He is awesome. :D

jocamryn: I didn’t get to see the game because I was at work and it wasn’t shown on my channels. If I get a chance to see it, I will let you know.

jocamryn: Being a Bayern fan of anything outside the MLS in the US is pretty sucky as well. Most people only know who Beckham is in the state I live in. Now and again I run into people that know who certain players, but not specifics really. I went to Dave & Busters and seen a guy with a National Team jersey on for France and it was a Ribery shirt so I was pretty stoked. And today at the gas pumps I ran into a guy who had on a Germany NT jersey. We had a nice conversation. It’s a rarity though.

I’ll take GolTV in Spanish over no GolTV at all. It wasn’t until last week that GOLTV all the sudden shows up on Comcast cable and I was pleasantly shocked as I assumed cable didn’t give one crap about soccer channels. Now if we could just get Setanta I wouldn’t mind not being able to get DIRECTV where I am!! http://eurosoccerdaily.com
