Bayern wins, Mark win… sort of
By: Angela | March 2nd, 2008Bayern took a win over Schalke 04 yesterday. I’ll be honest, aside from the first half, I didn’t see the game. I wasn’t home during the first airing and the second one was late at night after a really long day that started at 5am, I was beat. I saw the goal by Miro Klose and the goal that was disallowed by Toni for being offside, again. The midfield seemed to be a mess without Mark. Schalke had a lot of opportunities, but never seemed to capitalize on them.
The news is in that Mark took his case before the dfb and has won his case, but still has some time added on to his suspension. He will miss out on Karlsruhe at home and away to Energie Cottbus and has been fined 15,000 euros ($22,790) by the DFB.
Sorry for such a short update on this one!

An unusual alignment by Bayern, one that I don’t believe we’ve seen before. Apparently Hitzfeld wanted to take advantage of Van Buyten’s size in opposing Schalke’s header prowess. I thought Jansen was very quick to the ball, and this might have been the best performance of the year from Lell, who was constantly in the mix on the offensive end. As has become standard, a lot of missed opportunities for Bayern, and the obligatory disallowed Toni goal. Nevertheless, there were long periods where Bayern were in complete control and looked the dominant team from the first 8 or 9 matches. The substitutions really seemed to help Schalke-while they had some good opportunities early on, their best sustained pressure was in that 65-80 min area of the match. The Bayern midfield seemed completely lost when Ribery was taken off-but then again, the quartet of Ottl, Schweinsteiger, Demichelis and Altintop is probably another grouping that we have not seen together at any time this year. Jan Schlaudraff (whose nickname should be Waldo) was allegedly spotted on the pitch late in the match, and duly missed a golden opportunity. Don’t worry Jan, this is STILL better than being a “Kartoffelkäfer”. A somewhat improbable victory for Bayern, and now BVB fans can revel in the fact that not only will Schalke not win the Bundesliga, they might not make it back to Europe next season.

And the race toward the title is on! I wasn’t able to watch this game either because of network issues, which was a shame because I was looking forward to contrasting this year’s teams against last year. Is it really Slomka’s fault Schalke need 30 chances to score 1 goal? I can’t say.
Tangentally related: What a surprise that Leverkusen fell to Bochum! Didn’t see that coming.
