Bundesliga Kickoff: Bayern 2 – 2 Hamburg

By: Angela | August 15th, 2008

Before I start this post, I would like to with regular offside reader, Diana, a very happy birthday!

What an opener by both teams. Both teams were offense oriented and immediately took the ball back towards their opponents when they cleared it from their side. I was really pleased with this match and wasn’t the least bit bored even for a second. What can you expect from a game filled with four goals, two penalties and five yellows?

Bayern: van Bommel (C), Rensing, Schweinsteiger (Borowski 65′), Lell, Lahm, van Buyten, Zé Roberto (Ottl 81′), Kroos, Klose (T. Müller 80′), Podolski
Hamburg SV: Jarolim (C), Rost, Trochowski, Boateng (Demel 30′), Olić, Benjamin, Reinhardt (Kompany 52′), Mathijsen, de Jong, Pitroipa (Atouba 76′), Guerrero

The game kicked off rather quickly and the pace was up from the start by both teams. I wasn’t sure what to expect given the fact that Bayern are missing Demichelis, Ribéry and Toni. And then you take a look at a somewhat discouraging performance during the midseason and I was left wondering how this game would turn out. It was clear from the preseason that we have some holes that need filling in our midfield and that was painfully obvious today. Lucio got hurt early on in the match, but due to Demichelis being injured and the lack of defensive players, he had to stay in. For the remainder of the first half, he pulled back quite a bit and left van Buyten to cover virtually every spot on the back line. van Buyten did a good job, but you have to wonder how long they can play like this. What I mean is, Lucio can’t take a recovery match because there is no one to play his spot. van Buyten has a lot of skill, but he’s not Demichelis. If Lucio gets injured furthered, Bayern is going to be in a tight spot.

Twelve minutes into the game, the Uli Hoeness warning shows its effects on Schweinsteiger when he finally scored a goal. Evidently the ultimatum of Schweinsteiger playing National level football at Club level or his contract won’t get renewed was enough to put a little giddy up into his step and make us all remember why he can be such a valuable asset to have on the team.

Fifteen minutes into the match, Bayern were awarded a penalty when Mathijsen took to Schweinsteiger like glue and didn’t let up until he took him down to the pitch. Podolski took the shot and scored. In the fifty-fifth minute Lell pulled a similar maneuver on Olić, bringing him down in Bayern’s box. Trochowski took the shot and scored to draw even. There were two handballs against Hamburg that didn’t get called.

I still think the biggest problem with the team is within the defense, but I hope that Klinsmann will get that worked out. Lucio had some good moments, but he also was the reason that Guerrero was able to score the first goal. Granted, he was facing injury, but he was still right with Guerrero and didn’t make a move to defend at all. That goal was partially his fault.

The five yellows for Hamburg were awarded to Benjamin, Jarolim, de Jong and Guerrero. The lone yellow for Bayern went to none other than my favorite Captain, Mark van Bommel. I know, contain your shock. Even the commentators were thoroughly shocked responding with ‘the first card of the season to Bayern though it certainly won’t be the last for that man’. They were obviously incredibly surprised to see van Bommel get carded just like all of you were. ;)

Overall, the match was an improvement from the preseason and I’m feeling pretty positive about the teams efforts. There is still some work to do, but with Klinsmann’s plans you can’t expect it to be perfect over night. It was a good outing and a promising showing for future matches. Besides, after spending last season on top all of the time, it will be nice for them to have a little challenge.

John I am sorry that it ruined your day. I think it was an improvement but I agree with you about the lack of organization. Their defending and strikers have been a problem for awhile now.

I have to agree on it being an exciting match. The first 30 minutes were riveting. The penalty we were awarded was very light but it made up for the previous handball non-call that should of been a PK.

John: No Positives? Klinsmann looking for a new job in 2 matches if this keeps up? That’s a bit drastic haha. We’re under a new coach and we’ve got numerous key injuries. Granted, we didn’t look great today or even good but we played ok. I wasn’t expecting much more after the pre-season and I don’t envision this team getting off to a smoking hot start like last year. If we’re not playing a lot better than today in 2 months then I’ll start being more serious about performances like this.

    Some Concerns though:
    1. Klose looks completely off. He had 2 great chances to put goals away with literal 1 on 1’s with the keeper and was anemic. He has lost his nose for goal and has no confidence in shooting or trying to score himself. He just looks for the pass. I think this could be a horrible year for him.
    2. Our set plays were woeful. Not sure I’d want Kroos taking them much longer. How many times did we have a foul 25-30 yards out and Kroos would try to curve in a cross but sail it right to the keeper or to no one? And Van Bommel’s set play he did was even worse. Need to be much better on these.
    3. Rensing was nervous when our defenders back passed to him and his distribution needs work. Too many times he just boots to the ball up to no one giving it away.
    4. Lell is not very good. Nothing more to say there.
    5. Full agreement with Angela that we are bare thin at the back right now and if Lucio picked up an injury we are in some trouble.

Shane: I agree with all you had to say. Especially the concerns. Klose is woefully unselfish. He needs to learn to take a shot. Had he taken the shot instead of trying to carry the ball across in one instance he would’ve been able to score. Instead he carried on too long and the keeper was able to swat the ball away.

Hopefully the thing with Lucio was minor and it won’t become an issue.

Shane i am just pointing out how Bayern is run, see Klinsmann is not at Bayern to win the Bundesliga thats a given. he is at Bayern to do good in the champions league if Bayern don’t start looking like a team that is a given to win the Bundesliga, Hoeneß will start looking for a new coach. after three losses Magath sacking was being discussed and Hitzfeld was already talking to Hoeneß about taking over. Bayern is unforgiving to its managers. if Bayern play like that away from home they loose and every loss for Bayern is a step closer to Klinsmann’s sacking.

I really enjoyed this match, it was a pleasure to see the team play again even though there of course still are a few problems in the teams set up and there were some mistakes here and there.

Also, with all the negative commenting here lately I’m starting to wonder if some of the people are even supporters or are just here to criticize…

Ok, folks, let’s crawl back in off the ledge. You cannot expect thorough domination from any team missing its best striker, its best midfielder and its best defender (in my opinion).

I’m confident someone will suggest to Klose that if he doesn’t put the ball in the net, Mario Gomez will have his locker next season. It’s that simple. I’m willing to cut the Euro players a little slack through the month of August though.

Nothing is really going to change the fact that Lucio is perpetually out of position and van Buyten is too slow against good teams and plays smaller than his size. My main hope is that Lucio is motivated to sign one more big fat contract.

Schweinstieger scored his nicest goal in almost 2 years. It was certainly more memorable than anything last year, and the last “wow” goal I can remember from him was at Mainz in late 06. Even if he hadn’t scored, I’d rate his performance as a plus for today.

By the time Hamburg scored their 2nd, Bayern could easily have had 4. Ze Roberto’s sliding miss and Podolski’s rocket shot over the crossbar were particular disappointments. We need to get used to the fact that this Bayern will win a lot of 4-2 or 5-3 matches. We’ve got the all time goals allowed record, so we need to relax about that.

Klinsmann’s subs seemed like mistakes you make playing a video game. I think this is more reflective of the thin bench than some sense of incredible genius.

I’m not going to fault Rensing at all–Hamburg didn’t get anything more than they deserved.

Biggest disappointment was Kroos–of course, we need to be patient, but his preseason led one to believe that all the crosses would be zingers.

Finally, I don’t think it’s any mistake Hamburg seem to play well in Munich. Look how many former Bayern products are on that roster–those particular guys always seem to be extra motivated in Munich, and anyone can understand that motivation.

And this is why I love it when you come to comment Luke. These are the comments that I enjoy reading. You always make very valid points. As I said in my post, Klinsmann’s changes won’t take effect over night. He’s got some work to do and you can’t expect it to be perfect out of the box. It’s going to take some time to shape, but there are some holes that need to be fixed.

I do think some of the problem is the injury list. The substitution of Schweini seemed bizarre. I’m not sure I would’ve picked them but I’m also not sure he had many options at this point.

I’d just like to point out once more that you’re awesome. ;)

And that is why I like reading your analysis, Luke. I was reading around the wire news reports and it sounded a little negative. It’s only early days. For now, I am just happy to see Klinsmann in the dugout again. I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday present than that. :)

Angela, thanks for the birthday greetings.

While Bayern improved from those horrible pre-seasons and it was an exciting opener for the Bundesliga season, I–the perpetual pessimist–was a tad disappointed by the team’s performance. The midfield seemed a bit hollow at times and the offense dulled. Is it possible that without Ribery and Toni, the team quality can go several notches down? Klinsmann’s substitutions mystified me–and apparently the commentator too, who when Klose was subtituted out called Klinsmann’s choice a “unbelievable… no, I think there’s no word to describe it!”. While Klose’s been pretty much invisible, substituting a green player in is very confusing, especially since one can just give Klose more time to try and score–after all, he’s got a good track record against Hamburg, scoring 10 goals in 15 games in his career.(The commentator for my channel was very funny–he also said, “FC Bayern seemed to be FC Germany today” when Borrowski was substituted in :) ).

Truthfully, I was hoping for a win, but it was well-deserved for Hamburg to draw. I love Klose and all (understatement of the year), but this is what I’ve been worried about–he seems to have lost his old goal scoring touch.

And I agree that Kroos should stop taking the set pieces. I’ve been very excited about him after his pre season performances but this one was a let-down. But he’s still got time to improve himself. But since Schweini’s done such stellar set pieces during the Euro (read: against Portugal), I suggest he should be the one doing them?

And Clauw, I think most if not all of us are big fans of Bayern, but when you are fans, you don’t just take in every victory or draw the team makes, but you also wonder about the what-ifs and what-could-have-beens that happened in the course of the game. And there are always things that the team needs to improve on in most games, and some of it may seem like ‘negative criticisms’. I guess it could sound like ‘tough love’, like how mothers and teachers may negatively criticise their charges too. (:

And I actually had a bet with my brother that Mark would take up a yellow. Now I’m 5 bucks richer (:

Yeah. :) What a small world. We both watching the same channel! I think it’s not only the Football Channel showing, Lynn (considering the channel was originally set up last year showing mostly Premier League matches). If you have the Telescope magazine (for everyone else on the Offside, it’s the name of the magazine for the pay-TV here), it did mentioned that the matches will be shown on SuperSports as well. It said that up to four matches per week.

Football was the original reason why we have pay-TV in the house. :P It was my father’s idea some years back to sign up (he’s actually a bigger football fan than me).

Lynn: I don’t think Clauw was saying you can’t be critical, I am critical when they need it. It’s a fact that this game was an improvement. Is there still work to be done? Yes. But with Klinsmann’s style, you can’t expect the first game out of the box to be spectacular given the pre-season history. I think what Clauw was getting at is the perpetual argumentative comments. I was surprised by the Klose substitution as well. And the Schweini one. It didn’t seem right. And Lynn, you know I was horribly shocked that Mark got a yellow. ;) I adore that man. I don’t think they should be allowed to give yellows -after- the play, but oh well.

John: Altintop experienced some pain during the Erfurt game and evidently it was caused by a surgical plate inserted to speed his recovery from when he fractured his metatarsal last March. I don’t know that it’s too serious because he was expected to play yesterday, but they didn’t play him. Perhaps they just gave him a little more recovery time.

I actually liked Klinsmann’s decision t sub out Klose. It just seemed obvious that Klose wasn’t going to create anything and give Bayern a chance to score. Now, putting in an untested 18 year old may be asking a bit much but really who else did he have to try instead?

On the other hand I didn’t care for the Schweini sub but oh well. I can’t wait to see what champions league draw we get, but that’s still far off haha.

Am travelling, so haven’t had time to read any reviews of the game (was lucky to be able to have even seen it!) And am very reassured to see a lot of comments here which echo my feelings, after watching the match.

Great comments and analysis, great blog!

Overall, I agree with those who feel it wasn’t a stellar match, but as good as can be expected, given injuries, Euros, etc… I would have prefered a win, but am not in a panic.

One question: I wonder, did Klinsman sub in the 18-year old in a tactical effort to show Bayern’s management that we really need to sign another striker before the transfer window closes? My feeling increases that heading into Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Pokal with 3 strikers, one of them being a Klose in poor form, is too thin.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention… I’ve been watching English football up here, Liverpool’s CL match and Arsenal’s season opener today.

Honestly? For being the top teams in the top league, they, too show some pretty scary deficits. I’m not so sure Bayern is light years behind. I guess we shouldn’t be expecting miracles, and watching Arse and Liverpool really settled my nerves.

Elizabeth: I think given the pre-season outing, this was an improvement. As I said, we can’t expect a miracle over night. In two months time if the team still plays this poorly then I will start to worry. For now, they’re showing improvements and as long as the improvements continue on, it will work itself out.

I’m glad you enjoy the blog :)

I wonder how Luca Toni will work in this system. Klinsmann seems to value overall work rate and Toni is a pure CF, not quite adept at backtracking and defending. On the flipside, I wonder how Klinsmann will adapt to Toni as well – he’s a beast in front of goal.
