I wonder how Luca Toni will work in this system. Klinsmann seems to value overall work rate and Toni is a pure CF, not quite adept at backtracking and defending. On the flipside, I wonder how Klinsmann will adapt to Toni as well – he’s a beast in front of goal.

Elizabeth: Oh, you can say that again! I was watching the Arsenal match too and I was pretty pissed that my favorite clubs seemed to be a little bit goal-phobic (read: embarassingly wasting so many chances) at their first matches of the season.

Elizabeth: I think given the pre-season outing, this was an improvement. As I said, we can’t expect a miracle over night. In two months time if the team still plays this poorly then I will start to worry. For now, they’re showing improvements and as long as the improvements continue on, it will work itself out.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention… I’ve been watching English football up here, Liverpool’s CL match and Arsenal’s season opener today.

Honestly? For being the top teams in the top league, they, too show some pretty scary deficits. I’m not so sure Bayern is light years behind. I guess we shouldn’t be expecting miracles, and watching Arse and Liverpool really settled my nerves.

Am travelling, so haven’t had time to read any reviews of the game (was lucky to be able to have even seen it!) And am very reassured to see a lot of comments here which echo my feelings, after watching the match.

Great comments and analysis, great blog!

Overall, I agree with those who feel it wasn’t a stellar match, but as good as can be expected, given injuries, Euros, etc… I would have prefered a win, but am not in a panic.

One question: I wonder, did Klinsman sub in the 18-year old in a tactical effort to show Bayern’s management that we really need to sign another striker before the transfer window closes? My feeling increases that heading into Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Pokal with 3 strikers, one of them being a Klose in poor form, is too thin.

I actually liked Klinsmann’s decision t sub out Klose. It just seemed obvious that Klose wasn’t going to create anything and give Bayern a chance to score. Now, putting in an untested 18 year old may be asking a bit much but really who else did he have to try instead?

On the other hand I didn’t care for the Schweini sub but oh well. I can’t wait to see what champions league draw we get, but that’s still far off haha.
