Carl Zeiss Jena 6:0 Bayern Munich II; Lell sees red

By: Luke | August 10th, 2009

Mehmet Scholl faces the first crisis of his young coaching career after his Bayern amateur side were taken to the woodshed in Jena, suffering a 6-0 drubbing. After 3 matches, they have managed only a point. To make matters worse, Christian Lell started the match but was given a straight red for a foul in the 38th minute. The DFB has already suspended Lell for two matches. It has been said many times in these pages, but it’s high time that it be said again: it is time to ship Lell out of town. Or at least to 1860, so that he can still hang around his hometown. Andreas Görlitz also played for the amateurs on Sunday, and his performance was described as “disappointing” by the Munich press.

To Scholl’s credit, he seems to be taking a pragmatic approach, neither ripping lockers off the wall nor encouraging Zen meditation about the defeat. There is a report the squad will add 34 year old former Stuttgart, 1860 and Unterhaching midfielder Danny Schwarz, ostensibly for leadership purposes with this very young group. Each of the 4 Bundesliga amateur sides in the Dritte Liga (Bayern, Bremen, Dortmund and Stuttgart) are considerably younger on average than the rest of the teams and often lack an experienced stabilizing force. A couple seasons back, it was long-time Bayern central defender Thomas Linke, at age 38, who played this role. Additionally, the fact that the senior side for Bayern have pulled both Badstuber and Müller up to their roster makes it clear that Scholl has been dealt a tough hand. Perhaps the next acquisition should be Bastian Schweinsteiger’s brother, Tobias. The elder Schweini has scored 3 goals in 3 matches for Unterhaching thus far.

    Unrelated to this post, but newsworthy:

    Unfortunately, a ban for Van Bommel’s classy hockey check would likely be concurrent with his injury so it he won’t have to sit out additional games. Good to see the captain-like qualities he is show-casing to the youngsters.

    scholl is still learning to coach, so these types of results are expected.

    @Shane
    van Bommel is 32 and virtually at the end of his footballing carrier, he was never a particularly strong or fast even when he was in his prime and depended on tackling hard and hoping for the best and intimidating opposing players now that he is old he is now totally dependent on being intimidating and underhanded, expect more of the same from van Bommel throughout the season.

    Lell has proven he’s even not upto scratch with third division bundesliga football, I agree Angela it’s high time we offload him!

    @John it’s funny to hear you say that a central defender reaches his prime at 32, but a defensive midfielder (Van Bommell) is over the hill at this age! So which is it? At least be consistent with your remarks!

    On a side note, it looks like GOLTV is deciding to play both bundesliga games on Saturday live. The downside is that they are not showing the Bayern-Werder Bremen game. Source: http://www.goltv.tv/index_en.php

    Sorry I didn’t have it in the original article, but you can see match highlights at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki2Y5EKczko Lell gets completely burned on each of the first two goals, and his foul, while clumsy could have been much worse actually.

    @ John:

    Ya, I expect nothing less from him all season and it is going to be annoying to watch while the superior player rides the bench. Oh well though.

    Heh, Lell sucks in Liga 3, and we had him here last year… glad that he is not on the top club though i really think they could have probably loaned him to a 1st or 2nd division club and made him have at least some transfer value.
