Deal with Lahm falls through

Bayern have announced that they were unable to seal a deal with Philipp Lahm and have since withdrawn their initial offer. Bayern could not reach an agreement with Lahm and he announced today that he would like to go abroad.

“My plan is to leave Bayern before I’m past my peak,” Lahm said in an interview with Stern magazine.

“I played for two years at Stuttgart and I’m in my third year at Bayern, the biggest German club. The logical next step is to go abroad.”

Bayern will likely look to sell him at the end of this season instead of letting him go as a free transfer at the end of his contract which expires next season. Rumor has it that Barcelona is interested and Lahm says it’s a possibility.

  I really don’t have a problem with that. I don’t think the future of Bayern hinges on Lahm. He’s had long stretches of invisibility this season, and he doesn’t escape the blame in moments when the back line has shown weakness. The one thing that surprises me I guess is that he’s a hometown boy, but doesn’t seem to feel any hometown loyalty. You’d think this would be an instance where someone like Lahm might accept a bit of a lowball offer to stick around and see how high Bayern can ascend.

  Luke, that was the only thing that surprised me as well. I am not all that sad about him leaving either. We’ve gotten it done without him.

  Well, that’s a shame, but I don’t think he can be blamed for ambition. It’s a big step to move out of your comfort zone, away from your family and your language to try yourself on an even tougher stage. I’m actually pleasantly surprised to see him willing to take the chance he’s offered instead of waiting around for the Klinsi experiment. And I think it raises the prestige of the national team to have more players in the other top leagues.

  ….But I really think he misses his BFF, who’s having a rough bit of it at Valencia and could probably use a buddy nearby.

  Lahm is important to Bayern but at the same time he should feel that Bayern is important to him. I am particularly pissed by his comments about other clubs being bigger than Bayern..
  If he doesn’t need Bayern, we don’t need him too..Time to make some good money…;)

  at least we have Lell and Jansen. And Gorlitz will be coming back. I hope so, so that Sagnol will be forced to get back to his best, even for just two more years.
