Demichelis and Lucio
By: Angela | March 18th, 2008So we all know that Martin Demichelis received a suspension for insubordination when he refused to play a position that he was asked to by The General, Ottmar Hitzfeld. We all know that the team as a whole looked sloppy and took a loss while some key players were missing at the weekend. After that, Demichelis apologized to Hitzfeld and he was back in training on Monday and will no doubt be in the starting 11 for the next game. All is well that ends well right? Wrong. Evidently now Demichelis is rocking the boat even more. If you all remember, a few weeks back Bayern banned Mark van Bommel from playing in the Olympic games because they conflict with the start of the Bundesliga season. Demichelis has come forward and said he would play for Argentina. Bayern have said no, Demichelis has basically said too bad I’m playing. It’s causing quite a stir in the Bayern camp. It will be interesting to see what happens, if anything. Everyone knows that Demichelis is pretty passionate about playing for his Country. After all, when he was dropped from Argentina’s 2006 World Cup team, he took it pretty hard.
“It’s not only that I don’t have any desire to play anymore — I don’t have any desire to live,” Demichelis told German journalists in May 2006 after he was unexpectedly dropped by then Argentina coach Jose Pekerman.
We’ll have to wait and see how it all pans out. I don’t see how a team could explain allowing one player and not allowing another. I don’t think they will. I think it will come down to Bayern saying no and Demichelis once again going against the decisions of his employers. I am unsure what that will mean at the time… after all, Bayern will be under a new coach then.
It’s not even the end of the season yet and already the transfer rumors are heating up. The biggest one going around right now is that Lucio will be on his way out and off to Barcelona at the end of the season. His contract with Bayern runs through 2010, but he has expressed an interest to leave Bayern and I am unsure whether or not Klinsmann would fight to keep him. After all, if Lucio leaves, this opens up another spot for someone he (Klinsmann) has an interest in…. Per Mertesacker, who has not yet renewed his contract with Werder Bremen.
Lucio hasn’t confirmed or denied the rumors about Barcelona, but has only had this to say at the moment:
“I have already said the leagues in Spain, Italy and England – three of the strongest in the world – all interest me” Lucio told the Munich newspaper.
“If interest is shown from any of these countries, I would be very pleased.
We’ve got Tim Borowski coming on next season and if Klinsmann brings on Per that will be another international on the roster. That honorary game for Oliver Kahn is looking more and more like Germany vs Germany….

‘That honorary game for Oliver Kahn is looking more and more like Germany vs Germany….’
Look almost like it, Angela. Already back then when I read that Kahn’s testimonial match will be against the German national team, I was wondering how it will all turn out. Going to be interesting.Anyhow, nice to see how you thought of all the news that has been coming in lately.
So much news these days.Posted from

About Dimechelis and Lucio: Players hold a lot of power over clubs. This is just the way it is, so Bayern may not have much leverage in these situations. Martin should just understand that there probably won’t be a place for him immediately when he returns from Argentina duty, so that is a sacrifice he must be willing to make. If he has any other expectation about this, he’s simply misguided.
About Lucio: I know Angela’s not a huge fan, but I am. I think Bayern must think long and hard about this, since I don’t think it is any coincidence that our defending has been superb this year. Obviously it’s a team effort, but having Lucio makes a lot what Bayern does defensively possible.
About Mertesacker: There may very well be a bidding war for him, so I don’t think it’s etched in stone that he will be with us next year. I think many Premier League teams are going to be interested in him as well.
Wow! Given the uncertainty now surrounding Demichelis, Lucio, and van Buyten, there is now the chance that these three each may be wearing a different shirt in a different league next season.
On the bright side, we shouldn’t have any trouble attracting quality players since it looks very much like we’ll be a Champion’s League team next year.
On the other side of the coin, our defending (with a few exceptions of course) has been utterly dominant this year, and with a new keeper coming in next year we’re going to need this unit to be as steady and reliable as possible. This sort of turmoil could hurt us significantly as we look to the future.
Fingers are crossed…

Aaron: Couldn’t agree more on the defending account… It has been solid and you can’t deny the fact that it has to do with the players. I’m not a fan of Lucio and probably never will be, but that doesn’t mean I don’t see when he does well… he just makes a lot of mistakes.
I am uncertain if Bayern will even make a bid for Merte, but I know Klinsmann is a fan.

Don’t know if Lucio is really what Barcelona is looking for, mainly cause of his age. They seem to be after a younger guy.
What about Lahm and Sagnol? Both are said to be on the Barcelona list to replace Zambrotta at the right back. There’s a chance they will leave? And could Lahm do well at right back, mainly having played at left back in recent times?
