Despite Long Line, Butt Remains on Throne
By: Luke | January 20th, 2010It seems these days, that everyone has got their candidate for who should be FC Bayern Munich’s next goalkeeper. There’s no question management was interested in Manuel Neuer. Rene Adler gets mentioned in the next breath by many fans. Since Bayern will be visiting Bremen this weekend, you’ll see the mention of Tim Wiese here and there. Oliver Kahn would apparently like to see all that Audi money go into bringing Gianluigi Buffon to Munich. The list goes on and on. Steve Mandanda, Igor Akinfeev, Thomas Sorenson, and (perhaps more realistically) Samir Handanovic have all been linked with varying degrees of believability.
Publicly, Bayern’s leadership is not persuaded that Butt is merely a stopgap placeholder for the next German superstar keeper. When asked recently, Nerlinger was quoted on the club’s official site as saying “If we go into the next season with Jörg Butt as the keeper, I have no problem with that.”
You wouldn’t hear a lot of fan and media support for that position. So where is the disconnect? Why are the media and a large segment of fans just not sold on Butt keeping his job for the next 2-3 seasons?

Butt: With a new transfer suggestions each day, is it a question of respect?
The stats are deceiving; Bayern have just 5 clean sheets on the season versus 10 for league leader Köln and 9 for Leverkusen. And yet, Bayern and Leverkusen have allowed the same number of goals, (15) and Koln has allowed 18.
Perhaps it’s Butt’s adventurism. There is no question that he has kept the team in matches against opponents great and small. But pretty much every week, you’re guaranteed to see him coming out a little too far, inducing a cringe every time, but never yet paying a price for it.
Maybe it’s long memories. After all, it was Butt’s total blundering in the preseason Audi Cup that cemented Michael Rensing in the starting role at the start of the season (Rensing was named the best player of the “tournament”–how unbelievable does that seem now?). There may be something to be said for a keeper gaining his position through strong play, rather than the weak play of the man in front of him. It would be hard for anyone to say that Butt played his way back into the lineup, there simply wasn’t any alternative but to put him back in at the time. But Butt had played for keeps, that is for sure.
Whenever the time comes for Bayern to start a new star goalkeeper, one thing seems certain: he won’t have come from Bayern’s youth system. It seems a strange imbalance; Bayern’s system has produced a wealth of talent at every other position. But for as long as anyone can remember, the youth system hasn’t produced a keeper that could stick for the club. Oliver Kahn already had years of Bundesliga experience when he came from Karlsruhe; Raimond Aumann mainly developed in FC Augsburg’s ranks, whose youth team regularly outshined the senior side until recently. Even Sepp Maier had to give up playing midfield and come from across town into the ranks. A week ago in Basel, two of Bayern’s more recent young keepers were in attendance: Michael Rensing sat rotting on the bench, and Stefan Wessels was allowing silly goals like Klose’s first Interestingly, both came to Bayern from TuS Lingen, which should probably removed as a feeder team for keepers at this point.
UPDATE
On Thursday, Butt’s thoughts on the speculation over his future were featured in interviews with the club’s official website and other published reports. Nice of them to finish my story for me a day later!
More one liners
Bayern and Wolfsburg have pledged that they will play a friendly match “sometime in the next six months” to benefit the victims of the Haitian earthquake disaster. Look for greater cooperation between the two clubs in matters like this as the Audi-Volkswagen relationship translates over.
Ivica Olic was named Croatian Footballer of the Year, so čestitam! to Ivica.
Köln is rumored to be interested in Mehmet Ekici. To me, now doesn’t seem to be the right time to send him off, even if he does get very limited time with the first team. I just have the feeling that if he does get sent out on loan, he’ll be one of those guys that never comes back.
ESPN has not confirmed Saturday’s match schedule, but you can pretty much bet on Bremen-Bayern showing on ESPN 360 and ESPN Deportes in the US.

The thing is, we need to start seeing Bayern shape themselves into a GREAT team that can confidently go in and challenge for European glory, and Butt doesn’t feel like a champions league quality goalkeeper. I do think Neuer is, incidentally. Buffon is a proven keeper but he’s not exactly young at this stage.

I will say right now that a lot of fans are jumping the gun on the goalkeeper thing right now and for the last few months. It doesn’t suprise me though because the easy thing to say is always lets just get Adler or Neuer or whoever, fans always want instant gratification and in this case it just doesn’t make sense IMO. What MORE could Butt have done this last half? Could Adler or Neuer have done more, I really doubt it! To me Butt has done everything that was asked of him and more i.e. the pk in Turin, there really wasn’t much more Butt could have done and still be human. At this point I just don’t see Bayern losing games because of his performance on the field and unless Butt has a severe loss of form I don’t think Bayern have anything to worry about for awhile. Yes Bayern could go out and possibly make a deal for Adler or Neuer this summer, but how much will we pay out for what we get back? If it was a huge upgrade to do it then I would be more motivated to spend, but right now I just don’t see it making finacial sense of any kind! There is still plenty of time to find a young keeper for down the road and hopefully we can find a really good one in the future, maybe from a lesser League where the cost would not be too high.

Kevin did you watch the CL game at Bordeaux? or Turin? How did Butt do in those improtant games?

I don’t get the crazy scramble for a new keeper. Butt has been great, the defense plays great in front of him. He is only turning 36. He can go 2-3 years for sure. This is a keepers prime. Neuer and Adler are unrealistic barring some mega collapse by their clubs. They would both be far too expensive for a minor upgrade to Butt. Heck, Magath is flat out refusing to sell Neuer no matter what.
The one semi-plausible name I’ve heard is Handanovic of Udinese. He’s still quite young, talented and could be got for a reasonable price (probably ~10-12 million instead of the crazy ~25 million for Neuer/Adler/Akinfeev). I’d be ok with getting him, but I’d like to see Butt too. He deserves it.

Well first of all; no one should ever listen to anything that Kahn says. The man is an asshat and so self absorbed it is nauseating. I am more than happy with Butt in net. By no means has he been the problem or the weak link in the team. He brings loads of experience and calm in the back. Sure the young new guns are a bit flashier and sexier of choice but all of them are terrible on the high balls and crosses, especially Neuer and Akinfeev. I think it would be foolish to try to put out a fire that does not exist but completely ignoring the fact that we still have no central defenders with world class pedigree.
BTW great work Luke on the frequent updates. How are you feeling about the Werder game?

@ED: Yes. No one’s denying Butt’s talent between the sticks. My only point is that if LvG and co. want to build the team into a CL winning team in the next two years or so, I don’t realistically see Butt remaining in the same form. He’s 36. Say we have a team worthy of CL glory in two years. Then he’s dangerously close to 40. All the while Neuer is just out of nappies and a more long-term investment, in my opinion anyway.
And importantly, I’m only arguing this case because of the topic at hand. I think the team have more pressing issues on the field then the goalkeeper.

I, being the biggest and bestest supporter EVER! lol, am in no hurry to pick up a keeper yet. Butt is confident and suitable to be our keeper right now. But we do need to start looking for the future. Whoever the keeper is, in my opinion should be German, or at the very least fluent in German.
As far as Butt taking the PK at Turin… who else should have taken it. Butt has a 100% success rate in Turin! Also, hating to bring up bad memories, but taking Henry’s boot to the face at Camp Nouvo and coming back like nothing happened was pretty fantastic. I agree with Kevin as Butt not being the weak link in the backfield… I mean at this time we all know who that is…I brought this up to Luke before and figured I would do it again. Ive been hearing a lot of stuff coming from Nerlinger about Kroos. Before it was “yes Kroos will be back at Bayern at the end of the season, bla bla bla” and now it seems the tune is changing a bit and hes saying that he really doesnt know what is going to happen with Kroos. So this kind of makes me think that management is maybe coming up with a plan if Ribery doesnt extend. One of my thoughts is if Ribery leaves, then we might go after Özil and then trade Kroos off to Bayern for Adler. This really wouldnt be too far off the wall for it to happen. As much as I like Kroos and cant wait to get him back to Bayern, this scenario wouldnt be that bad. Just a thought.

It’s interesting that no one has bothered talking about Christian Kraft. Sure he’s a kid, but how he’s rated should also factor into buying a keeper.
While the Rensing situation might leave a relatively bad taste in people’s mouths, the Casillas situation replacing Illgner when he was still ~18-19 should also be considered (I’m not comparing Kraft to Casillas… yet).
It’s still too early to consider a No.1, but I think attention should be paid to either promoting Kraft to No.2 and making some money off Rensing, or buying a new keeper outright, and deciding what to do with Butt and Rensing while keeping Kraft under development.

You mean Thomas Kraft. Good point. I wouldnt say hes ready for 1st team now but should be soon. I think the thoughts of selling Rensing is most-likely unanimous for both player and management… but to which club?
I have watched Kraft play for B.M. II but its hard to say how well he would do in first team since the quality is that much better and the pressure as far far greater.Posted from

@EinMuenchnerImHimmel: Thanks, and if I’m lucky we’ll get the Bremen preview out tonight. But I think this match is trouble.
@Tomas: Actually, I wouldn’t characterize what’s coming out of management as being unsure about what’s going on with Kroos. He is coming. They’re just taking pains in their public comments to be a bit sensitive so Kroos doesn’t feel like a piece of meat. Also, I get the sense that Kroos’ dad is a bit of a pain in the ass and they’re trying to placate him a bit.
The problem of course with swapping Kroos for Adler is that Adler has much more relative value. There just aren’t as many top keepers available as promising 20 year old midfielders.
Unraveling the Werder Bremen roster is complicated. They’ve got Naldo and Marin locked up long term, but they have a TON of contracts that run out in 2011. They have a lot of decisions to make soon. I haven’t been tracking them closely, but just giving the roster situation an overview, I think Ozil is going. I just don’t think he’s going to Bayern, it doesn’t make sense if you’re committed to Kroos.
As far as Kraft: I just think we would have seen him get called up for the U21 team or at least get some minutes in some of these friendlies if anyone was really that high on him. The team for Rensing could be….Hertha! Figuring they go down, Drobny will not extend and be out of there, Rensing could regain his confidence with a year in the 2.Liga. Another possibility is Cologne, where Mondragon is almost 39 and has 1 more season left, max.

Yes I meant “Thomas” not “Christian”. I agree with Tomas and Luke, that obviously Kraft is not ready for the first team call-up, and some time for the U-21’s would give everyone a better idea about his quality. He’s also not been eye-popping in training.
I also think that Bayern should make a decision soon, not necessarily this summer though, since at some point in the next couple of years, Bayern will need a No.1 goalkeeper. Rensing so far clearly is not the man.
If they go about looking for someone only when or after Butt retires, or if the management realizes Kraft is not up for the job after having sold, then Bayern might end up overpaying or just getting a bad keeper. Earmarking candidates for the summer of 2011 or 2012 could allow for more thought out negotiations, a better look at the players, and also ease things for Butt (provided he wants to retire in that time frame).

@A Kap: I think the fact that they went after Neuer shows they are thinking about the longer term. If Schalke don’t reconsider their position, then Adler’s contract runs through ‘12, and he’ll be on the radar this time next year. The trouble is, he could be on a lot English radars as well, depending on how the World Cup goes.

Why buy Oezil if Kroos is coming back and he is free? I really don’t believe that Leverkusen would do a swap and some cash for Adler with Kroos staying there anyway because as Luke said a good midfielder is easier to find than a stud goalie. Nerlinger needs to send the scouts out and let them do some roaming the next 8-10 months and see what they can find for a young and strong GK from some of the lesser clubs in Europe, somebody Bayern could develope. Butt can get the job done for at least another year maybe two.
And I am very curious to see how Ribery’s contract extension goes and if that affects Kroos at all?

@ ED, thats the whole point. Kroos isnt staying at Leverkusen, hes coming back or so Nerlinger said previously. It is true that there are more good German midfielders than there are GKs… probably about 20:1. But if Ribery does sign, Kroos will be going right back on our bench until probably after next season when some players exit.

Tomas, you may be right and there is a 50/50 chance that Ribery might stay, but even if he does stay and Kroos comes back it still just strengthens the team because you know for a fact that there is no way on earth that Robben and Ribery go through a season uninjured and Muller can come off the bench too if need be for a striker or midfielder. I don’t see why Kross couldn’t start half of the games even if Ribery stayed and if he does go then you definately need help on the left side!

Actually I’m quite comfortable if we sell Ribery at the end of this season! I would much rather prefer to put the Ribery media circus on the back burner get 30 million euro for him, and get the marvelous Toni Kroos back from his loan spell to start weaving some magic for Bayern Munich!
On the goal keeping front it has been reported that Bayern Munich scouts have been watching Samir Handanovich from Udinese in the Serie A numerous times with chief scout Paul Breitner watching him on more than one occasion! It might be a space to watch?
Apparently he his expecting an official offer to be made to udinese come next May in time for the 2010/11 season?
