Fear for van Bommel

By: Angela | August 8th, 2009

According to kicker and the FC Bayern website, there is concern over an injury to Mark van Bommel. During the teams match against Hoffenheim, he was asked to be taken out of the match at which time he was substituted for Anatoliy Tymoshchuk. After leaving the pitch, Captain Dutch was taken directly to the hospital for a thorough check of his foot. At this time, it is unknown what his condition is. I will keep up to date and let you all know as more information comes available.

Hopefully all will be okay. I will dearly miss my favorite Captain if he is set for an injury layoff. :(

I’ll respond to Shane and Angela’s comments on the previous post here wrt MvB.

I think the Tymo situation can be put down to a bit of bad luck. When the Tymo deal was done, Klinsi was still the manager, and the formation he preferred required 2 DMs, essentially the same template as Hitzfeld, but with a far more offensive philosophy.

With that in mind, Tymo would have undoubtedly slotted into the spot vacated by Ze Roberto. With everything that’s happened since it is unfortunate that Tymo will have to ride the pine for a while, although he might get playing time till MvB gets back.

I can’t entirely agree with you about MvB playing ahead of Tymo, because the Captain needs intangible qualities beyond the direct performance on the pitch.

Roy Keane at Man U would be the best example of this situation. Of course I’m not saying MvB is the same class as a leader, which is not really a knock on him as much as it is an opinion on how respected Keane was despite his obvious thuggish approach. From whatever I saw of the EPL, Keane’s performances on the pitch were not too much to write home about, but with him around, Man U knew they wouldn’t be bossed around.

The question now is, how will Lahm respond?

Apparently, Van Bommel only suffered a bruise to the foot.

I just don’t see it besides a big propaganda campaign from LvG who likes Van Bommel because he is Dutch and enjoys their dinner conversations. Besides, the one anecdote of Van Bommel driving Tymo from the airport I haven’t seen any other instances or players speaking out about how much they enjoy him as captain. A strong captain can be a great thing for a team, but we have none of those personalities on this team. Give it to Lahm who probably can grow into the role and it will lock him up to Bayern for his career. Unfortunately, this will not happen. So I’m preparing myself for many sub-par performances in the future as LvG refuses to put our best line up on the field b/c of a dutch connection.

It has nothing at all to do with the Dutch connection and everything to do with his leadership. It’s fine if you don’t see it, but his team does and that is all that matters. Tymo isn’t the only one that has talked about him. Klose has said the same. Ribery has talked about what a great Captain he is, as has van Buyten. The list isn’t a short one. Lahm even talked about how well respected van Bommel is by his teammates. It’s pretty clear that they’re all happy with the choice no matter what anyone outside of the team may think.
