GOLTV shuns Bayern again

By: Luke | August 11th, 2009

GOLTV’s weekend Bundesliga schedule is up, and once again, a big Bayern Munich match is not in the listings. The network will show Hamburg-Dortmund live at 9:30 Eastern Saturday, Cologne-Wolfsburg live at 12:30 Eastern Saturday, and Schalke-Bochum live at 11:30 Eastern on Sunday.

Last week I mentioned that I thought a chimp must be picking the matches. Actually, that was a bit too strong of an insult, as I now see a method to this madness. It could only be the work of a higher life form (left).

ESPN Deportes has not listed their matches for this week, but ESPN 360’s schedule already contains a spot for live Bundesliga matches on both Saturday and Sunday. The Sunday match can only mean that ‘Gladbach-Hertha will be shown then, and I would find it highly likely that Bayern-Bremen will occupy the Saturday spot. If they hold to form, Bayern-Bremen will also be live on ESPN Deportes on Saturday.

It’s been a little tricky to get a handle on the new Dish Network “German Sports” channel. I can’t make sense of their schedule for Saturday just yet, but perhaps if any of the readers is a subscriber, they can shed some light on it.

Although GOLTV has been pretty dim-witted in the past, it seems really unlikely to me that they would choose to air 3 live Bundesliga matches (a commendable improvement), while passing on Bayern. Could it be that part of the sub-licensing agreement with ESPN gives ESPN first dibs on which match to air? The answer to this question may greatly influence how many Bayern matches will end up on Deportes and how many on GOLTV.

I thought GolTV had 1st dibs on Bundesliga matches, but I can’t back that up with anything concrete.

In regards to Dish Network. Apparently, there is a new german sports package, but no one seems to have a handle on the listings yet either.

That was my impression too Shane, and although Hamburg-Dortmund isn’t chopped liver, I just don’t see how it’s a bigger draw than Bayern-Bremen. The only possible angle I can see if they had the 1st choice, is that somehow GOLTV thinks Paolo Guerrero or Nelson Valdez are a bigger draw to their Hispanic audience, as Bayern’s South Americans are more in the background. Still they’re passing up Marcelo Moreno for Bremen then, someone who I think would excite their target audience.

I kinda prefer the Spanish broadcast, especially if the English options are JP Dellacamara, Tommy Smyth and Co. Those guys are utterly useless. Even the English commentary on the internet feeds are just passable. At least the Spanish guys are excitable.

Yea, I’m really surprised no Bayern 2 weeks in a row when it has been two excellent games. At that time slot and removing my Bayern bias I really felt those were the best games to show. I dont mind ESPN Deportes but my service doesnt have ESPN 360 so that is a pain.

At least they have to show the Wolfsburg vs Bayern match in 2 weeks. If they dont show that then something fishy is going on haha.

I’m happy that GOLTV has been playing 3 games each weekend so far, but I bet once the Spanish league starts up, it’ll be back to 2 games per week.

Also the team selection has been pretty weak. After this coming weekend, GOLTV will have televised both games by Wolfsburg (decent), Dortmund (passable), Cologne (passable if Podolski wasn’t injured), and Bochum (boring). No Bayern, Bremen or Hoffenheim. Crazy.

Any idea where I can get the Bayern game in Canada? We don’t get any of the espn channels and espn360 is not available either.
At first I was happy to here about ESPN picking up some of the Bundesliga games, however this has become a problem since TSN and TSN2 (ESPN Canada if you will) are not showing any Bundesliga games.
Last year despite the fact that Goltv would show one game a week it was guaranteed to e the Bayern game.

If this is a program decision by Gol TV it makes zero sense. Bayern has more international fans (and far more haters) than the rest of the Bundesliga combined… Whether people tune in to see them win or see them lose, I am sure their audiences are close to double any other bundesliga teams. Bremen is also not chopped liver, though didn’t they lose Diego to Juventus? Those will be very hard shoes to fill. Hamburg and Dortmund probably are also in the top 5 international draws for the Bundesliga. I mean what they have chosen for their game is not a bad game, but I just fail to see how it would have a bigger audience than any Bayern game.

    @RD you can try livesoccertv.com.

@ Angela: I know it saddens you that Capt. Dutch is down, but it is going to be great to get Tymoschuk some playing time early in the year so he can be ready when needed.

I think Neuer is the better keeper. He seems to be the more confident of the two. But if you’re talking German national team, I like Robert Enke 1st, and then Neuer 2nd. Not a fan of Tim Weise. Just my 2 cents!

@ Barin I personally think Adler is the better of the two at this time. Neuer has worlds of talent but makes a lot of mistakes still.

http://www.goal.com/en/news/12/spain/2009/08/13/1438720/real-madrid-to-include-wesley-sneijder-arjen-robben-in hehe the rumors won’t die, will they? First of all, they say the value of the deal then becomes 60m which is ‘close’ to the 80m Bayern is requesting… 60m is not even close to 80m in my book… Also Sniejder does not want to leave Madrid. In saying this, I don’t have a problem with this deal if they can get Sneijder and Robben on board. Ribery is injured far too much to not take deals like this, especially if you can add 2 world class midfielders and 30M to spend on a goaltender.

@ Mark I agree about Weise, all he does is makes impressive but futile dives to make opponents goals become highlight material.
