Hamburger SV vs. FC Bayern Munich: Preview

By: Luke | September 25th, 2009

Suddenly, the injury sheet takes a front row seat. Daniel van Buyten’s appearance is still in doubt after a training ground injury Thursday. The team’s website reported that he took part in training on Friday, however. This is a bigger deal than just being without an in-form player. There’s a reason he’s played every minute of every match since Micho was injured–there really isn’t anyone else to play there. A few less-informed English-language sources seem to be suggesting that Micho is fit enough to step in, but fail to take into account that he started training again on Wednesday . So no, I don’t think so. Therefore, if you want a right footer in there, you’re really down to Görlitz, who hasn’t played central midfield since before he went to Karlsruhe. Otherwise, you’d have some combination of Badstuber, Breno and Braafheid. Let’s not contemplate this any further and hope Daniel is completely up to speed on Saturday. Hamburg appears to have some new problems of their own beyond their existing injuries: although Mladen Petric and Joris Mathijsen seem to have overcome their knocks, Ze Roberto is a game time decision after a calf injury forced him out at halftime of the Pokal match on Wednesday.

Of course, the media can’t go through the buildup to this match without obsessing over Ze Roberto. You can read a paint-by-numbers interview with him at the official Bayern website. I only ask one simple question: has there been a single moment this season when you’ve said to yourself “I wish Ze Roberto were here”? I didn’t think so. A personnel move can be sentimentally wrong, but structurally correct. We did not need to tie up 2 seasons in a guy who was clearly declining in the 2nd half last season. He might make a nice contribution here and there for HSV, he already has. But HSV fans, of all fans, should be familiar with pointing at long-ticking clocks, but in this case seeing that time is not on their side.

Making some waves in the tabloids was Louis van Gaal’s decision to send Luca Toni back to the reserves for the weekend. Why this surprised anyone, I’m not sure. Toni had been sidelined a lot longer than Klose had, and clearly the Pokal match was not Toni’s finest moment. Let’s rejoice in the fact that we’re good enough to say “Luca Toni, eh, we don’t need him this week”.

When you look at a long term rivalry with so much match data behind it, it can be difficult to pick out what is meaningful. The next temptation then, it to write in the monster-truck rally promoter style, something like “throw out all the stats, this is going to be an all out brawl for the top of the league!” Well, that misses the point even more. So without any further ado, let me give you the stats that I think are most pertinent going into this match. In 6 Bundesliga matches, HSV has scored 7 goals within the first 15 minutes. Bayern on the other hand, have scored a big fat 0 in the first 15. Conversely, Hamburg have allowed 5 of their 7 goals in the 2nd half, while Bayern have, you guessed it, 10 second half goals on the season. Six matches is enough of a sample to give you a good sense of what game flow is like. If you’ve watched Bayern this year, you know they are especially slow starters. However, Bayern have the luxury of willfully adapting away from this tendency–simply by starting Robbéry. Meanwhile Hamburg, who have seen the injured Paolo Guerrero and the gimpy Ze Roberto score nearly half their goals, don’t have much other option than to put their trust into the Bergs and Elias of the world and hope the early scores continue. Something is going to change in these opposing dominant trends, and I believe Bayern have the greater ability to affect that change.

Key matchup: Eljero Elia vs Philipp Lahm

Lahm is our leader on the pitch in Van Bommel’s absence, and he is coming off what was arguably his most offensive-minded performance of the season against Oberhausen. He’ll need to play his best defensive match of the season to bottle up the speedy Dutch left winger. Perhaps LVG and Braafheid will have a few instinctual tips for containing the former Twente product, but keeping Elia out of the flow would go a long way towards denying HSV the ability to reform their suddenly ailing attack.

Prediction
Hamburger SV 1:2 FC Bayern Munich
By now, my prediction section is becoming pretty comedic. At least I predicted a significant header last week. I have the feeling that I’m not according enough respect to HSV based on recent results. They’re a good team, especially at home. But, I think we’re determined enough to be better.

Actually Luke 3:1 for Bayern. this is the kind of game that they have traditionally gotten up for. They can see the top of the table, and although Hamburg have done a very nice job at improving their roster, man for man they are no match for Bayern. Even with injuries, Bayern has a superior squad that they put out on the field. If DvB can’t play, we may end up with an absolute track meet and like a 5-4 score or something in that neighborhood. I just wonder what we will do… Go with Breno and Badstuber or move a Pranjic or Braafheid in the middle?
Anyway, I really believe Bayern will win this game. They will score at least 3 goals. They will score at least 1 early. And if Breno is called on, he will play well. There, now you can have more goofy predictions from someone else. Oh, one more… 2 goals from Mario, he seems to want to prove something…

by the way Luke, you said 3 title contenders, who might your list be?
I think there are more than that… Besides HSV and Leverkusen (guessing those may be your 2, quick starts always seem to get people on the bandwagon).
There are a lot of contenders, but all require another slip up or injury filled year to have any chance. Bayern has better players on their bench than most have in the starting lineup. Anyway, I will give my impression on who I think is a contender and who is not.
    Contenders:
Wolfsburg: slow start but still has Dzeko and Grafite amongst others, and started slow last year to and you see where they finished.
Schalke: Felix Magath and a decent line up anchored by Neuer in goal. Will be very dangerous by the second half.
Hoffenheim: Probably did more during the transfer period to improve their team than anyone except Bayern.
Hamburg: Lots of good players but not really any great ones except for Ze, and he will show his age eventually.
Leverkusen: Adler makes any team a challenger. Really good balanced scoring up front with lots of options. See them as fading again in the second half though, not a deep team.
    Pretenders:
Bremen: Lost Diego and though they brought a few good players in, Diego was not sufficiently replaced. Tim Wiese is the most overrated player in the history of the bundesliga.
Frankfurt: Off to a really good start, but this team really doesn’t have the guns to compete for a full year.
Mainz: Have really built off of their win over Bayern, but can anyone really take this team too seriously as a contender for the full season? Will probably avoid relegation, but not a serious threat.

I’m mildly worried about the defensive situation. Even if van Buyten plays, chances are he might still be feeling the effects of the injury. That said, I’d rather have him play than Micho, since he’s been out so long.

I think Lahm will have his hands full against Elias. First, because he’ll have no support from the midfield, and second, because Elias is big and quick, and likely to cause trouble just like the Euros against Turkey and the WC semi final where Camoranesi muscled past Lahm time and again. The situation on the other side of defense is unchanged, and still questionable.

Hamburg has been hit bigtime with injuries to arguably their best offensive players. If Ze doesn’t play, this might get pretty tough for them. With that in mind, I won’t be surprised if HSV plays not to lose, with Elias providing the most impetus on the wing, and possible support from Ze. This one won’t be pretty.

@Roger: I am glad to see your enthusiasm! I’m approaching it a little more guardedly because this is a match where HSV really has to respond. As for my title contenders, they would be HSV, Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim. Wolfsburg for the reasons you state, and Hoffenheim because if they get hot scoring wise, their defense is good enough to support a long winning streak. I may reappraise HSV after his week. Schalke I think will succumb to internal strife. Plus, I can’t see them scoring enough goals. Leverkusen, you’ve pretty much said it, some good talent but not much depth. Bremen is typical Bremen, they’ll lose too many 4-3 matches. And Frankfurt? A lot like Karlsruhe two years ago.

I dunno about Breno playing well. Fortunately, he might not have to play that well. If Tymo/Schweini can dominate as they have done then they could make even Breno look like a decent CB.

    Title Contenders:
    1. Wolfsburg: People need to look at the schedule. Theirs has been absurd in difficulty. Their 3 losses: Away to a completely and utterly desperate Bayern team, a fluke loss involving several bad referee decisions (Leverkusen), and a legitimate loss to Hamburg at home. Wins away to Koln, Schalke and home to Stuttgart. Their next 5 games are a joke. They are about to rattle off 4-5 straight wins. And this is with Dzeko playing like crap.

    Outside Shots:
    1. Hamburg
    2. Hoffenheim
    3. Neverkusen

Quick first half impression. Defense played great with the exception of about a 3 minute period, where they fell asleep but Butt bailed them out. Offense… more selfishness than i have seen in awhile. Easily Olic’s worst game so far, almost invisible. Easily Butt’s best so far. Two saves by Butt may have sealed his spot as the number one keeper, Rensing better get used to his spot on the bench.
