Hitzfeld says goodbye
By: Angela | January 2nd, 2008And so the words that the majority of us thought were coming, but hoped not to hear have actually come to pass.
From Sky Sports:
Ottmar Hitzfeld has confirmed he will be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
The Bayern coach returned to the club less than a year ago and is under contract until the summer.
There had been suggestions that he could extend his stay at the Allianz Arena, but Hitzfeld has opted to quit the current Bundesliga leaders.
“I made my decision known to the club’s officials three weeks ago,” Hitzfeld told SID sports agency.
“I want to leave the job at the end of the season.
“I will now do all I can to win trophies for Bayern in the time left to me.”
Hitzfeld is now expected to become coach of the Switzerland national team when Kobi Kuhn leaves after Euro 2008.
Swiss national team delegate Ernst Lammli has confirmed that informal talks have already talken place, while Bayern’s executive manager Uli Hoeness expected Hitzfeld’s departure in the summer.
He’s been an excellent coach to Bayern and I hate to see him go, but wish him well. I do hope we’ll find someone, that isn’t van Basten, to fill his shoes.

While Hitzfeld has been good, I think somebody with more energy could reinvigorate Bayern. Since his return, there’s been a steady stream of speculation about the short-term nature of Hitzfeld’s tenure and his exhaustion. Someone with more enthusiasm will be a welcome change.
That said, I’m worried about reports that Van Basten is Munich’s top choice — mainly for the impact it will have on our midfield general Van Bommel. AFAIK, unlike with Van Nistelrooy, they haven’t kissed and made up yet.

Julie: I really worry that van Basten coming on board will mean the end of van Bommel at Bayern and I would really hate to see that happen. People can say what they want about van Bommel’s way of play, but there is no one else on this team that fills out the leadership role the way he does. He has a very good feel for what the team needs, the direction they need and he has no problem providing it. Also, who else would send their mates inspirational texts before a major game while serving a suspension? I don’t think anyone else has done that except Mark. I will be very sadened if he leaves.
