The home 2009 jersey… Thoughts?

I still think the Captain looks good.. but then I’m blinded by the awesome smile and dimples. Yes, we all know, I’m very biased.

It’s Official – Bayern have signed Gomez for next season!
I know a number of other bloggers to this site have wanted this transfer, but I’m not so sure whether this is the right move for Bayern? I think I will sit on the fence and see how he goes next season before voicing any more opinion about him!

I guess I’ll add my usual positive outlook here. First off the new kit has got to be one of the UGLIEST things I have ever seen. Don’t know what Adidas was thinking this year, when I first saw it leaked in Chelsea form a few months ago I was like “Thank god Bayern has their striped one” then a week or so later I saw a leaked Bayern one and was disgusted. Honestly the only good thing I can say about it is that the FCB logo looks good, other than that, total crap. Secondly Mario Gomez. NEVER been impressed with him. Period. I think he’s a waste of money and a waste of a spot on the Bayern bench. However.. If he scores a ton of goals this year and does great for Bayern I’ll retract my statement but I’m betting I won’t have to. He’s overrated and a waste of good transfer money for FCB.

I think the only question with Gomez is how big his impact will be in the Champions League. Will he be the type of player that will be able to score in a clutch second leg match? And I have to say, he has as good a chance as anyone. I don’t know, maybe you guys are thinking of Podolski in looking at this transfer, but I am convinced that we’ve signed the best young German striker out there, and what’s more, he’s not still sucking his thumb, as Podolski was. It’s easy to judge Gomez on the basis of the Euro; even I made wisecracks. But I don’t think you can argue with an average of nearly 20 goals a season in the league the last 3 seasons (that in spite of missing a quarter of season in the two seasons prior to this!). Bottom line: A 23 year old with this kind of talent is worth every penny.

@Luke: >>Bottom line: A 23 year old with this kind of talent is worth every penny.<<

    I agree with that.

I was away for awhile in Nevada (very Rural uncivilized Nevada at that) so I missed some stuff, but will be catching up and blogging my thoughts soon enough…

With Gomez in, maybe Luca Toni is gone since Bayern might need to offload that wage packet, and honestly, I think his stint has run its course. If that does happen, Bayern will need another back up striker.

Midfield seems to be set, but the defense needs shoring up. Depth primarily, because I’m still not sure how much of Bayern’s defensive woes can be attributed to tactics and how much to ability.

Of course GK is another concern. Rumors of Neuer seem to be interesting. Breno needs more practice, maybe a loan would work out well, but that leaves depth issues. Sell Lell, hell pay to ship him out.

I’m of the opinion that with a basic shape in mind, 2 players for every spot, i.e. 22 first teamers would be ideal for an assault on the triple crown. It will be an exciting off season for Bayern…

A Kap: That does seem to be the question, what happens with Toni. There’s some speculation he goes back to Fiorentina, basically in exchange for Sebastian Frey. I just don’t know that Fiorentina are all that eager to move Frey. Frankly, even if Toni goes, I don’t think they need to buy another striker, they should just elevate Müller, and see what happens. If they don’t get Neuer, I think they’ll be looking at a keeper from outside Germany. Given the past van Gaal-Enke connection in Barcelona, that makes me think Louis is not impressed with him, and there seems to be a general feeling in the Bayern front office that he’s too old anyhow.

Very exciting signing. Yes, I think Luca will be out. He is the opposite of the kind of striker Van Gaal likes. I agree with Luke that I don’t think we need another striker. Olic, Klose and Gomez will be fearsome and Muller can be the back-up if (when) injuries occur. Now it is time to zero in on a right back and goalie. I don’t expect them to buy a center back but I’m not looking forward to another season of trotting out Demichelis or Van Buyten. Nice guys, but they are too slow.

Hopefully, the Gomez transfer with Tymoshuk/Olic and a couple more to come will motivate Ribery to want to stay. The likely removal of Toni will probably dim his spirits though as the two are good friends.

Last reports seem to discard the Neuer transfer, it is funny that Magath considered Benaglio the best keeper in the world some weeks ago when rumours linked him to FCB, and now it seems the same, is it a personal problem with our team?…..Anyway I agree with Luke as far as it concerns to Enke, still we have Adler, present number one in the NT gate. As I see it, when a player hesitates having the chance of joining FCB he must be discarded.

Finally, for the “right back hole” (Hoeness dixit)those who could see last week the UEFA cup final should agree that Dario Srna is a first level player, I was impressed with his performance, I consider him the best option

Shane: There’s actually a 2nd leg, but given the scoreline, you are right, the promotion is pretty much a fait accompli. While I do think it’s important in a certain cultural sense to have Ossi representation in the Bundesliga, I will dance on top of FC Energie’s down elevator, because they are really not a good representative for that role, considering how little growth potential a team based in Cottbus has. Beyond that, they really lack much of a tradition, and it can be hard indeed to find the Germans on their roster. I’m sure teams will prefer going to Freiburg for their “trip to a distant corner of the country” next season, and it will be nice to have Bayern derbys too!

“While I do think it’s important in a certain cultural sense to have Ossi representation in the Bundesliga,”

Well, Hertha Berlin are in the east of Germany and is no longer part of “the West” since 1990. Although this fact hasn’t arrived in people’s heads yet, as the majority of Hertha fans still come from districts once known as West Berlin.

Anyway, Dresden and Leipzig are the two big cities who would make perfect east German additions to the Bundesliga, but that will take ages to come to pass.

Looks like our old friend Felix is the only one standing in the way of a Neuer transfer..that Magath’s statements are so obstinate actually make me hopeful..ask Hamit, you can only stand to be in Gelsenkirchen up to a point, even if you were born there!

I would agree Luca Toni’s days are probably numbered if someone comes up with proper cash for a transfer, as Mario Gomez is very much the same type player as Toni… great finisher, very average at everything else… but many years younger and much more upside. I’d really like to see a right back and a goaltender soon though as it would be nice to see what we will be going in to next year with and I will vomit if they trot Lell out on the field next year.

The acquisition of Danijel Pranjic really throws open the door to a lot of speculation. Bayern have not had a player this versatile since “Brazzo”. One thing has remained consistent; Pranjic has always played on the left. So this could signal a hedge against losing Ribery, or just as easily, a signal that LVG wants to use Ribery differently than his predecessors. If the latter is true, it may be bad news for Schweini. A further possibility is Pranjic at left back, a spot he has frequently occupied for Croatia. In that scenario, Lahm moves over to the right to plug that hole. I don’t see that as the plan personally, although I wouldn’t say we’ll never see that alignment. Pranjic is reportedly excited to be playing with Olic, and perhaps we can expect some thrills from these two who already know each other well.

Well Luke, it’s also true that Lamm prefers the right side anyway, so this also could mean Pranjic will be on the left, Lamm will move to the right, and Lell will move back to the bench where he belongs. Now all that is needed is a world class keeper and some depth to back up the outside fullbacks and Bayern will be set with the depth needed for a long champions league run.
It does appear Ze Roberto is gone now, but the midfield issues were preaddressed during the winter transfer period. As much as I loved the way Ze played last year, opening up more playing time for Altintop and Borowski won’t be a bad thing. Sosa also really took a step up during the last part of the year and showed that he may be ready to try and become the long term solution.

I agree with Luke that Pranjic might just be Brazzo Mark II, but as far as I remember, Brazzo lined up on the wing, and only slotted at the back during emergencies. What’ll happen if Pranjic goes down for a game or two? Goerlitz coming back might provide depth, but again, the coach might start looking at Lell. Lucio at right back was an interesting experiment though.

Sosa coming on now is good, and I’m glad the patience might just pay off. Micho also took a few years coming on too, and I think he’s better than he seemed this past season. Breno might be in the same vein.

With the depth Bayern has in MF, I wonder how van Gaal will set things up: 4-3-1-2, with Ribery in a joker role maybe?

Everyone keeps forgetting how bad the centre of defence were this last season gone! Nothings changed there in this department and still needs to be worked on in my opinion!

VG will need to stop the leaking of goals through the middle! Notice how no one in the marketplace want’s Lucio services after his incompetant performances this season?

If I’m not mistaken the fullbacks setup looks like this: Lahm and Pranjic on the left or Lahm / Gorlitz / Lell on the right, but that would leave only Pranjic on the left something doesn’t added up?

My feeling is, Pranjic will be used more offensively on the left, so perhaps we’re going to see a 4-3-1-2. He also slots in as a replacement for Ribery (sooner or later) in a 4-4-2. I am thinking van Gaal’s interest in him is tied to his club play, which was not at the back. So I think there’s still a right back to come.

We need a deep bench for so many games. With the DFB CL and league play we need it. Remember the “7 games in 21 days” month? Ran us ragged. Player may not like rotating but I’m a fan of it. Some more suited for CL play, league play etc…

But hey I’m not coach lol
