It wouldn't hurt if we dropped either Robben or Meullar and played ' Golic ' upfront. I mean change the style of play a little. Week in and Week out we play the same. The almost same 11 and same stratergies. If we dont change teams will form their own against us. And God forbid if Stuttgart scores, we all know what that means … parking of a big fat bus in front of their goal and us having 95 % pocession and not doing anything with it.

Jupp should try Golic upfront for a change. Olic's shown glimpes of his 09/10 form and he deserves the start. Moreover Olic does move around the pitch. gets back to defend as well.  I hope we go for a 4-4-2 just for a change. Catch Stuttgart offgaurd coz am pretty sure they expecting the standard 4-2-3-1.

what was the actual tactic that arsenal and marseille used to beat them?

I like your idea a lot ( and the “Golic” I have heard the first time, it's great:) )
In the second half we can bring whoever was left out (Muller, Robben, Kroos or whoever), depending upon the situation.

Agree 100%, Muller is not necessarily the problem, but the position is the linch pin of the attack.  That position needs to play strong to make Ribery and Robben/RW to play as providers instead of defactor strikers starting from outside.

I prefer Ribery, as well, but both of them are trying to be the game changer/goal scorer instead, of providing the front 2 in the middle of the pitch.  And, I think it's the competition of our 2 wingers screwing things up.  Kroos/Muller need to be more demanding/aggressive to get the ball played into the hole.

That's why maybe pushing Schweini up could help.  LvG did it, and it helped spark Gomez' season last year.  JH has done it, but primarily as a conservative holding tactic.  I've always wanted to see more interplay up the middle which is why I push for Kroos in the hole with Schweini/Tymo.  I want to see if Kroos and Schweini can swap roles midstream with Kroos slipping back beside Tymo for stretches of the game.  Get Schweini making runs linking with Ribery and the RW, as Kroos drops and opens space for Gomez to get away from his markers.

It also has to do with the players you have in your squad.  This is more about the players, than the coach.  Teams were parking the bus against us in the 1st half of the season… did we all forget about Napoli… one of the best park the bus and strike on the counter teams in Europe.

(rubbing hands together) okay, well, let's see how we do.  One hopes that with XShaqiri lined up for the summer, FCB will be in a better position to demand more from Robben.  I just don't want him making our locker room smell pissy, thats my fear.

good game, only came in to the see the second half. I didnt even realize schweini was missing until the commentator stated it. However it is Stuggart, but we need him back as soon as possible. It was good to the see the passing and fast plays working again. Phil your right, the Muller – Kroos – Ribery is always a great combination, and Alaba is working harder than ever as a player. Most importantly I hope to see more of the wings switching from time to time, especially when Muller and Ribery switched wings. Lets hope this is enough confidence booster for the rest of the season!

Totally agree, Alaba was excellent! The problem is that when you have a player like Schweini coming back after injury, he needs lots of game time to get back to form. We all know he was far away from his best but we hoped he would come back quickly. Now with this injury it may or may not be a big problem.
What is a coach to do.
If I was Jupp I would decide on Alaba and let him play until Schweini is 100% himself again, which could be weeks or months. At this point Schweini needs full recovery and get his game practice with the FC.B 2 until he feels confident again.
We have too many high stakes games coming up to play rank.
This, more than ever is the time to manifest team confidence.
Alaba is quirky, improving every time I see him and better than a Schweini out of rehab.

You've got Modric's game all wrong, Phil. Modric is seldom the provider of assists – he's got a grand total of 8 in his last three years in the Prem, averaging just under three a year, with his best year as a player producing only one assist. Modric is a poor shot, too, 8 goals in the last three years and not a notable from range. He is a good dribbler, but his real strength is a simple passing game, focus on ball retention, and offering himself for the ball. He's a playmaker not because he breaks the defence but because he always gives a teammate a pass to make, and circulates the ball accurately, but he's not really a goal provider with assists, late runs, or long-range shots. His style of play is very similar to Busquets and Xavi, and Schweinsteiger is very capable in that role (though he has been more aggressive this year). He's a deep lying playmaker but not in the mold of Pirlo or Guardiola.

To break down a parked bus there are a few things to do. The most important is to expand the active playing area, generally by stretching the play with attacking fullbacks (which we have, but seldom use to rampage down the touchline). This allows the wingers to play closer to the center without the ball and pins back opposition wide players. The second is to shoot from range if the opposition doesn't close down aggressively (Barca did this in the CL final against Man U well, scoring two from range amongst numerous good efforts). The third is to use fluid movement to avoid players being stuck in marked zones. If a player is in a fixed role, they should be ambiguous in their position and difficult to pick up. An example of the former is Man Utd's quick one touch passing plays (especially earlier this year) where a couple players would stand in close proximity and overload a zone, much like Germany, with Khedira and Lahm supporting the right flank, while Oezil and Klose further drift right. For the latter, Robinho's role with Brazil at the 2010 WC is exemplary, neither Left Striker or Left winger, he drifted between the CB and RB zones, clogging up both while being able to beat whichever was closest with his fantastic dribbling. The final way to beat the parked bus is to play around the defence, by swinging crosses around a defender in order to meet late runners.

In terms of our team, we could use dual attacking fullbacks, but it would leave us more vulnerable to the counter, so it isn't really that viable away from home (which is where most of the problems have been). Long-range shots are good, considering the prowess of Schweini, Kroos, and Robbery, but low percentage. Overloading a zone is probably our best bet, considering we have a lot of players who are multipurpose and technically good. Indeed, earlier in the season our quadrangle of Kroos (playing a leftish AM role), Ribery, Schweini, and Lahm was a more conservative version of this. Crossing is viable but would require Robbery switching flanks and committing at least one of our holding mids into the box, in all likelihood.

It is also possible to use long direct passes, but obviously you need a very good aerial team for this (i.e. not ours).

lets see what the injury is first.  Alaba had a great game and i agree with you mostly.  I just don't know if its that bad, and i don't think schweini can be stopped from starting asap.  just strikes me as in that kind of a must win focus for the upcoming year.

It was a bit disappointing that he didn't bomb a long one on his return, but he's just showed such maturity when it really matters in the past that I want him in asap as well.  Whatever his physical weaknesses before this tweak today, it was not what was bringing the team down, he just wasn't as big a bonus (or compensator for all the other problems the team has been having) as we hoped.  that was likely an unrealistic hope; but really he is the best.

The tactic was let BvB have the ball possession and create tons of openings and miss all of their shots wide or high! which is pretty much what happened in the first game with Arsenal because no one on Dortmund could put a shot on goal, nobody! It ended in a draw, when in reality Dortmund should have had a 2-1 or 3-1 win. It wasn't what Arsenal did
although RVP did have a nice finish on his lone attempt for a goal, it was what BvB didn't do in the end that hurt them.

    And cheaper too!

Which should leave us plenty of room to get another quality central defender and maybe a striker too.

I liked what I saw out of the whole team today as they seemed a more cohesive unit than before, more willing to fight for balls and make extra runs off ball and to get back on defense. Our passing was crisper and at a better pace for most of the match, Kroos, Muller and Gomez all seemed to be on the same page and we were linking up much better than any of the previous three contests. What we lacked in Robben not being there skill wise Bayern made up for in teamwork, Muller had two very nice balls in to Gomez one of which he scored his goal on, Kroos hit the crossbar again with a fine strike and Ribery did a lot of running/dribbling trying to create openings. Gustavo again impressed me with his defensive skill because he has attributes that Bayern needs on the field of play i.e. it is like we have a third central defender on the pitch to create havoc on the other team. Gustavo needs more minutes the team is just that much more secure to me when he is on the pitch. No slight on Tymo in any way, but that is what I see in the team chemistry when Gus is out there.

Alaba keeps playing above his years which is very nice to see and he gives us everything he can coming off the bench. Bayern just looked much more fluid in this match with VFB then we have lately and I hope that this carries over to the Bundeliga game this weekend.

Am with you on this .. Alaba was simply amazing. I mean i was a little sceptic when he was brought in for Schweni. I thought it'll be either Robben or Tymo on. But Alaba was good. He was strong on the ball, Strong to hold off challenges and excellent in dribbiling . His vision to find Gomez in the build up for the second goal was really good. Man he can replace anyone at CM and keep Kroos at CAM/Second Striker. Which looked very good for us yest. Meullar looked very comfy at RWM.

between coming to the build up for the second goal , though Gomez passed it to Meullar and he returned the favour by playing in gomez again for the goal, a much simpler option would have been was to pass it to Ribery ( i dont think we was offside). Ribery was in a more advanced position and could have scored more comfortaby. This move could have been messed up if the opposition had better CBs marking Gomez better. Just a thought.

very true….Gustavo's passing and positioning improvement are amazing compare to last year when he was first introduce….

Alaba give us more spark on midfield especially on offensive and defense with quick movement. his control and vision are also above average on counter.

i think for now on we need different paring for CDM to cater specific opponent.

What a game. This game wasn't a step in the right direction, this step was 2 or maybe even 3 steps in the right direction. The entire team improved big time. From front to back great performance. I would have wished for more goals but good game. At times they showed their old dominance. Now I just hope that 2 things are going to happen:
    1) Hopefully our midfield general did not get a serious injury.
    2) Hopefully Robben will think about what he did wrong and instead of raising a big stink about how he didn't play I hope he will learn and improve.

Yeah I kept thinking that too as I was watching. I kept thinking old man made a ballsy decision to bench Robben. Good for him, good for us. He showed he'll do what it takes to win.
