Lucio gone for good.

By: Angela | July 16th, 2009

Bayern have agreed to release Lucio from his remaining year on contract which has led to him signing either a three or five year deal with the Italian side; Inter Milan. The team refused offers from Inter in the beginning as they were only offering to take Lucio on trades of other players. However, Bayern declined saying they would only accept cash. Inter returned with the cash and now they have agreed. They will not disclose the transfer fee amount though.

I can’t say I’m saddened by all of this. I have never really liked Lucio much anyways. I’m really glad he’s gone. And I can’t say my DvB loving heart is disappointed by the departure of Lucio either. ;)

Aside from the ongoing Lucio saga, we’ve also had to deal with all the rumblings of interest in Franck Ribery from Real Madrid. You might be happy to know that the internal club deadline for Ribery’s transfer expired on Wednesday so he will be with Bayern for at least one more year.

louis van gaal is too old fashioned (coaches chose center backs based on their preferred foot back in the 60s)…. his desire to have a left footed left center back and his general dislike for Brazilian players(he had similar problems with Rivaldo) has cost Bayern Munich their best defender (no matter what is said about lucio a champion club like Inter Milan would not be interested in signing a poor player to play in a league where defense is the main focus)… and if they don’t find a good left footed replacement then Bayern will struggle in the champions league…. thing is there are no really good left footed center backs and that youngster thats being looked at(Badstuber) and Braafheid(who is left footed and Van Gaal thinks should start at left center back) are not good enough to play competitively against champions league strikers… and Angela, Van Buyten wont start more anyway since he is right footed. he, Demichelis and Breno are now competing for the right center back spot so he will probably start in the same amount of games this season as he did last season. Van Gaal has certainly not lost his controlling nature and similar crazy moves will probably be made throughout his tenure at Bayern, hopefully his irrationality brings some sort of success before the inevitable collapse it always brings.

I for one are so glad to see we are getting rid of some more dead wood from the side! Lucio has not performed at any level of competance for the past 12 months, making blunder after blunder! You could tell he was only interested in playing in the Champions League, as on the domestic front he only played to 50% of capacity, when he felt like it!

That’s why I have been so critical of him! He’s 31 now, been milking the system, so it’s time for a change and bring in younger blood! So John, what would you have Badstuber do? Sit on the bench for eternity?

All younsters need to start somewhere, they need to be blooded and gradually given real bundesliga experience! So in years to come if they’re good enough they will be the players of tomorrow we all talk about!!

Well if you lower your price and sell us Ribery for 50 to 60 milion Euros you can go out and build a fresh new team. Chances are Perez would probably throw in Robben and van Der Vaart into the deal and you (Bayern) are well on your way to being competitive on the European stage again. Maybe you have failed to notice but you did not win the Budesliga last season ad got murdered by Barca. Yes we also failed miserably but at least our future looks brighter. With the additional money that you would garner from selling oF ribery and the inclusion of VDV and Robben you are well set for a competitive team. 60 mill can get you a new defender and you couls probably attract one or two more players as well. Barca just bought Zlatan !!How the fck are we suppose to win la Liga or the Champions League without Ribery. The player obviously wants to play for Real. Give him his wish.

How often has Robben played really? He might be talented, but the kid’s made of glass!

I agree with Zermatt, that Lucio was over the hill. The Confederations Cup was also an indicator, especially the games against Egypt and the US.

I think its good to have younger understudies in central defense. Bayern has had quite a few players come through the youth system, even if they don’t end up playing in Munich, so I do have hope for Badstuber, and to a certain extent, Breno.

Although by the contract (which I believe ran through 2012) they could have held Lucio for another year and then tried to sell, this was a wise move financially regardless of the tactical implications. This was the last chance to get anything for him, and I would submit that although Braafheid is a relatively unknown quality, I find it unlikely that he will blunder as frequently as Lucio. There may be something to John’s point about Braafheid’s ability re: Champions League competition. But frankly, I don’t think Bayern have deep CL ambitions for this season. When they add a competent right back, they will have enough talent and depth to win the Bundesliga, and then LVG can blow up the Hitzfeld-Klinsi remnants after this season with the Ribery money and take a couple stabs at it with his guys. I’m thinking LVG will last about as long as Magath.

Actually Luke, Lucio’s contract only ran to June 30 2010. Therefore we had to sell him now, otherwise he would have walked as a free agent this time next year and we will have got zip!

As for Muhammad patience is a virtue!!! Madrid will have Ribery next year and we will be selling him no doubt about it! I seem to recall a woeful Real Madrid were thrashed 6-1 at home in the Bernabeu last season (OUCH!!!!) which makes our loss of 4-0 at Camp Nou pail into insignificance!

Bayern are wise they didn’t want your injury prone Van Der Vaart and Robben neither of which are worth 2 Mil. No wonder why you’re struggling to offload them at present!

Lucio is not over the hill?… that is a joke… is that why Beckenbauer is now in the press talking about how hard it will be to replace Lucio? or the fact that Lucio is the captain of Brazil…. and that now he is moving from Bayern to one of the other of the biggest clubs in Europe Inter Milan, has been players don’t move to big clubs they move from big clubs to mid table and small clubs… and Bayers defense was so poor last season because Klinnsman could not organize a defense to save his life, it is the main reasons he was fired…. anyway it seems like van gaal is disappointed with Bayerns squad so lucio will not be the only one sacrificed to his system…. he says he likes to play 4-3-3 but Bayern does not have the players to play that formation so currently he is trying out a 4-2-2 diamond formation, he thinks Bayerns strikers are all too similar and that the midfield lacks creativity and add to that the fact that he only wants a squad of 23 players more players will be leaving Bayern in the near future.

    @zermatt
Unlike other outfield players center backs come into their own at a later age Maldini the best center back of the past 20yrs was not a competent defender till he was 26 and was not a great defender till he was 28… no 20 year old will be able to match a top european strikers in the champions league, a twenty year old will even struggle greatly against run of the mill bundesliga strikers, its one thing to develop youth its another to throw them against top class opposition and expect them to hold their own… and the fact that Badstuber is getting consideration purely because he is left footed is insane… starting a center back based on the fact that he is left footed is a flawed and outdated idea as all of Barcelona’s center backs are right footed and both man u’s starting center backs are right footed… i could go on and say the same thing about almost every top club in Europe. louis van gaal’s system is based on an irrational belief that a player must play on the side of his dominant foot… crazy decisions like this defensive one is one of the main reasons louis van gaal has never had an extended coaching stint at any club or national team despite winning the trophies he has.

I don’t think anyone really believes Badstuber is going to be a regular in the squad. Yeah, he might get the start against Mainz and Freiburg, but I don’t expect to see him much in the CL. To speak to John’s point, there has to be more than one way to succeed, or everyone would play the exact same style. I’m not so bold to say that every decision LVG makes is the right one, but winning trophies is more important than lasting a long time. So, if it is madness, there’s a method to it.

At least in training Van Buyten has been favored over Demichelis and Breno. Also, as of late it seems Badstuder is not as in favor. I really hope we make a move for a fullback before this transfer season is done. I loved Lucio’s passion and spirit and he was clearly our best CB last season, but he wanted out and this is the only time we could cash in on him. Sound move by management.

LvG has stated that his formation (4-4-2 with a midfield diamond) is centered around Ribery who will play at the top of diamond. From A team training they have played Van Bommel at DM spot with Tymo on right and Pranjic on left, however; Tymo is pinched in and providing plenty of defensive duties while Pranjic is wider and more attacking. On the right Lahm provides most of the width play.

    Looking forward to the season!

from what i have read from bild and TZ, Demichelis plays in practice as the right center back and Badstuder plays as the left center back and they have kept with this paring for all the friendly games they played so far and they did so in the T Home Cup though Van Buyten was injured… Bayern lost to hamburg and with van gaal saying Bayern played a bad game both attacking and defending… this loss was expected wit so many new starting players that are not accustomed to each other… but there are squad problems as well, Timoschtschuk and van Bommel play the same position , they are both defensive midfielders, van gaal only plays with one defensive midfielder so Timoschtschuk is now forced to play on the right the problem with that is that Timoschtschuk has no real flair or creative ability and it makes Bayerns attack off balanced to the left and is responsible for the lack of creativity Bayern has exhibited so far… its still early and things might change but if they don’t Timoschtschuk will probably loose his starting place and Altintop will get to start as he was the player who replaced Timoschtschuk against hamburg.

We’ll all have a better idea about the formation and line-up once the captain is named. If vB is named captain, then chances are Tymo will be on the bench. If it is someone else, then most likely vB won’t feature at the start and Tymo will take the DM spot.

I’m not sure I like the idea of Ribery at the top of the diamond. I think he’s been quite effective wide and cutting in. Otherwise he might end up like Rooney at MU, where his tactical effectiveness is diminished if he is boxed out of the center of the pitch.

I’d like to think the current formations are just to get a feel of the team, since a lot of players, especially the wide ones, Ribery, Schweini etc. are still working themselves into match fitness.

Well, that’s a little more like it! I had a real junk feed, so I only actually saw two of the goals in full motion, but it seems like a few of the boys finally got sick of running around in circles and accomplishing nothing. Not much to apply to actual Bundesliga play, but it’s nice to see Müller making some nice plays and building some confidence, and for the club to wake up and play with half the players missing. One thing of value that can be taken from this match I think, is that we definitely can be sure we have more skilled depth than last season.

I guess the question is now whether Bayern can sign a new right back before the transfer window closes. As far as I am concerned there is only one player left on the team roster whom I class as “Dead Wood” and that player is Christian Lell!

As for Michael Rensing I’m prepared to give him another season to prove us all wrong, as I still remember his fantastic displays in goal against AC Arseholes in the Champions League three seasons ago!!!

My predictions in 12 months time, is that Bayern will lose Franck Ribery, Luca Toni and Daniel Van Buyten in the transfer window of summer 2010! Simply because both Ribery and Toni will only have one season left on their contract and Bayern will want to cash in on them. Whereas Van Buyten will be a free agent next summer!

zermatt: If van Buyten goes, it is likely Ribery would follow. He has already said when Daniel leaves, he will go with him. And when Real were looking at him, he told them he’d only come if they agreed to take van Buyten – which they did, but the deal didn’t go through.
