Great start to the CL. This game was nerve racking. Easily could’ve lost or drawn. Couple nice saves from Butt. I feel like Robben/Ribery got really slowed down by the soggy pitch and were having a tough time beating their man, making runs and through balls.

I think a Olic/RObben/Ribery front line could work, but it looked bad tonight and I chalk up part of it to the pitch. Gomez when he came on played very well. I like all the great options we have at striker.

Tymo with a solid game. He made a couple of very poor give aways that led to dangerous Haifa chances though. Schweini played better in 1st half, fine game though. Mueller again excellent in putting away games for us. He’s the man who puts in the dagger.

3 games in a row now with similar plot line. Poor 1st half with us trailing or tied 0-0. Waterfall of goals late in 2nd half to win comfortably.

Thanks for the analysis Shane. I missed it too, and am very likely to miss the weekend’s action as well. I will be looking here to get a proper analysis.

I actually thought they played better in the first half, they just didn’t finish. In the second half, Lamm and Van Buyten both made huge mistakes but Butt bailed them out…

After following many text feeds during the match and getting to review a lot of video, I’d have to agree with you, Roger. But Shane has a point about the pitch as well. I can remember a match a couple years back in Belgrade where this was really an issue too. I guess what bothers me the most is a blundering Lahm. Maybe more so because he’s got the armband, maybe because I have higher expectations for him. With DVB, I just hope for competence, and if he exceeds it, then I count myself pleasantly surprised.

Yea, definitely a better 1st half. We had a goal that was extremely close on offsides called back. On replay it really looked like it should have been allowed. Haifa had very few decent chances in 1st half. Ribery was too unselfish and should’ve taken his own shot a few times instead of trying to lay it off. Olic with better finishing should’ve put 1 in. There was one through ball where Olic beat the keeper and knocked it over and it felt 100% like one of those goals Gomez would’ve somehow snuck in the net. I’m a huge Olic fan, and I still think the world of him, but he did not have a great match.

Robben had a poor match. Couple of bad passes and usually lost when trying to beat his man. Again, probably lots to do with the wet pitch hurting his technical skills. Also, it felt a bit remiminscent of the Dortmund match where our left side got very little supporting runs from the full back. Like Braafheid, Pranjic did not do much going forward. Defensively I thought Pranjic was very solid though.

As much as Tymo had an excellent performance his two clumsy passes set up arguably the two best Haifa chances and Katan nearly made us pay. Butt with a nice performance. Didn’t make any incredible saves, but had 3 good stops, controlled his area well and didn’t do anything reckless like against Dortmund.

    In Other news:
    - Van Buyten looking for a contract extension. He played the Ribery and loyal to Bayern card. Amazing how he has gone from villain to hero. 3 terrible matches to start season capped by catastrophe in Mainz and then 3 excellent ones in a row including a crucial goal in Israel. He had a nice game against Haifa again captaining the defense. Maybe he just plays much better when he is “the man” in the backline and doesn’t look up to his CB partner. I’d like to see him get an extension. It can’t hurt the Ribery situation :) .

    - Also, Uli praises Mueller but also tones down hype on him citing what happened to Rensing and partially to Kroos.

We must remember though Luke… EVERYONE makes mistakes, We are still dealing with humans here. One thing I have noticed is Tymo has been playing better every game as he gets more acclimated. It’s hard to find stats on it, but seems to me, he’s gotten at least a couple assists the last three games, and is one of the reasons teams have not been able to counterattack us down the middle as has happened since Zenit St Pete, a couple years ago. Tymo is not at all flashy, so he doesn’t stand out at all, but he is getting the job done now, and realizes his defensive midfield role and rarely gets caught out of position.

I was watching several of the CL games and the weather sucked everywhere. Rain can be the great equalizer in soccer, and it was nice to see Bayern still play well in it.
