News and Notes 8-7-09

By: Luke | August 6th, 2009

Just as Louis van Gaal was settling upon a roster, injuries have forced some last minute juggling. The big news was the ruptured ankle ligaments suffered by Martin Demichelis. A six to seven week recovery time is the early prognosis. We will find out early on if management has made the right moves in improving the central defense.

Miro Klose and Jose Ernesto Sosa were added to the injury list after a practice squad collision. If they are unable to go, Alex Baumjohann may be forced into the starting 11, with Thomas Müller up front. Another possibility would be to push Ivica Olić into the starting lineup along side Gomez, with Müller playing behind them. Van Gaal seems to be ruling out any starting role for Franck Ribéry, if in fact he is fit enough to be in the squad.

Transfer rumors continue to swirl around Luca Toni, the latest have him moving to West Ham. Christian Nerlinger has vehemently denied the rumors in the Munich press. Meanwhile, Breno’s rumored move to Fiorentina may be on permanent hold after the Demichelis injury.

Jogi Löw named his roster for the August 12th World Cup qualifier in Baku. Not surprisingly, Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Klose and Gomez will all be making the trip.

FC Bayern II will play away against Carl Zeiss Jena in a 3. Bundesliga match set for Sunday at 7 a.m. Eastern time. Mehmet Scholl and company will try to pick up their first win of the season. Scholl also turned up in a list of “100 most popular Germans” published by Bild this week.

Chances are they might drop Badstuber into the deep end or play Braafheid in the middle with Pranjic at LB. You are correct, Luke, in saying that hopefully this spurs management to do something about the central defence.

Word was that Klose would be fit for the match despite the collision. Mixed bag start, so far with injuries, but I can’t wait…

Another piece of news dropped recently is that Schweinsteiger has been named the third captain behind Lahm and Van Bommel.

Hadn’t heard that about Schweini, but it’s good news if it’s true. I’ve been concerned about his place in the side since Van Gaal came out saying he’d decided upon Altintop for the right side. Guess we’ll see tomorrow. (yay!)

Ya, sorry about that. I should have provided a link to substantiate that claim: (if you can read German)

Well here are my random thoughts on the topics of discussion. Yes, I will stay on topic today and not talk of ugly kits!

    1) I really do hope that we do transfer Luca as he is most likely not going to play much and it would be nice for him to get a change of scenery… West Ham though? They barely stayed in the premier league, you’d think he’d have higher aspirations. Anyway, it would be nice to sell him to someone, and put money in the bank so if Rensing/Butt stink up the pitch again this year, we can go out and make an emergency move midseason.

    2) Even though he has received his share of hate here, losing DeMichelis is a huge deal. It does seem they have a lot of options though. Badstuber and Breno could both be given shots… Pranjic could be played in the center defense, or moved to the left and Braafheid moved into the center. Though I thought both of the kids did really well in the Audi Cup, it’s my personal opinion that Pranjic be the one who sees the lion’s share of the time. Nothing beats experience, and with Breno and Badstuber both under 21 and defensemen typically maturing later, maybe against the top opposition Pranjik would be the better option, and versus lesser teams give Badstuber and Breno both some time and see how they handle the pressure of games that count.

    3) According to Bayern’s website, Ribery is not even being brought along to Hoffenheim so that settles whether he will play or not.

    4) Seems that a lot of the kids will see action early on, this could be a blessing in disguise for later in the season, as more will have seen time under the gun.

    5) Have I said yet that Rensing in goal again brings the taste of bile into my throat?

    6) With Schweini being 3rd capt, I guess he is certainly a starter… Being he is one of my favorites, I’m happy.

Let’s hope for a really good start to the season this year, and though I am very hard on Rensing, I am really hoping he makes all of us naysayers eat our words. I would be very happy to say I was wrong.

Considering that ESPN360 is limited to only certain ISP’s, its out for me. I wish they wouldn’t do that and would rather open it up to the whole of the US, but oh well. I think I might be able to catch it anyways elsewhere.

Thankfully for me, comcast finally added it this month. It’s a matter of them paying fees to ESPN.

@Roger: I live in a tiny rural community that has its own internet, not one of the big guys so it will never happen. ;)
