Podolski injury woes…again

By: Angela | April 1st, 2008

Podolski celebrats after scoring against NurnbergDuring the match with Nürnberg we saw Podolski shine and give the equalising goal to bring Bayern a draw. We also saw him take a knock that left him on the ground for a few minutes and still carrying a limp after the match. Now, it comes out that he’s doubtful for the UEFA match against Getafe on Thursday. He was unable to take part in Bayern’s training on Monday due to a swollen ankle. He went to the medical unit for treatment, but it’s still unsure if he will be fit for Thursday’s match.

“He’s doubtful. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s fit to train tomorrow, or at least take part in final training on Wednesday,” assistant coach Michael Henke explained.

Good luck to Podolski. Here’s hoping he’ll be okay for Thursday match and get a start. That much is deserved right now.

Last month I endured a sprained ankle that hobbled me for about a week. It will get better on it’s own, and probably relatively quickly. But for a big game like the Getafe match, I think we’ll want to have our most fit players available, even if that means our most skilled need to sit on the shelf. I don’t like the idea of starting Podolsk and then having to use a precious substitution by halftime against such a dangerous opponent. I’ve commented before about how I think Poldi is easily distracted, and while playing with injury can sometimes help a player focus, I’m not sure Podolsk is that kind of player.

I’m sure we’ll cover this in more depth as this draws closer, but for me one of the keys to the Getafe game is the play of Schweini, Sosa, Lell, or whomever else gets the start on the wing opposite Ribery. We’ll need some real swashbuckling play from that position, including challenging possession when they are building up in their own half, and being able to provide enough attacking runs to ask questions of the defense. Lahm can do a bit of this attacking as well, but he’ll need to have a good understanding with whoever is starting with him on that side.

…And of course the play of Miro Klose replacing our hobbled Podolski.

I was hoping that he will get a start against Getafe..This is not a good thing for Poldi. He seems to manage an injury as soon as he makes a good impression on the coach.
Anyways, here’s for KLONI!!!..I hope we bang in at least 4 goals and wrap the tie before the second leg. My brain tells me that its tough. -:)

Aaron: I agree whole heartedly with you on all points. Including Podolski’s distraction factor.

I am hoping that Mark is well enough for the match (he’s suffering from a bad bout of the flu), but if I know Mark he’d have to be bleeding out his eyes to stay away…

We need all of our top players against Getafe. It’s going to be a tough match.
