Luke has brought this up before and I agree with it: Poldi is great at forward on the counterattack when the other team has the majority of possession. With Bayern in the Bundesliga 9 out of 10 teams we play sits back with 10 behind ball and in this setting Podolski cannot use his speed/skills to shine. The reason we need him next season though is for Champions League where will be facing squads that are going to out possess us and box us in and here Poldi would be marvelous for the counter attack.

I hope we keep him but if he REALLY wants out and Klinsmann can't find a way to motivate him then it is better off selling him now while the stock is still high post the EURO's.

Luke: We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. ;) I think Poldi is a great player when put in the right circumstance. However, I do not think he plays up to Bayern standards and I think there are a lot better players in Bayern's squad that will keep him on the bench far more often than on the pitch. Maybe the Klinsmann factor will make a difference for him, but his performance at Bayern isn't up to par. And why would it be when he's said Cologne is the club for him. His heart isn't in it at Bayern and I just can't see him playing for them.

timochang: Poldi is a class player. He was one of the top goalscorers in the Euro's. Granted, the top scorer didn't score a lot of goals either, but that's not to say Poldi isn't a good player. He is a good player. I just don't think he's cut out for Bayern. This will be the tell tale year for the young Podolski.

i don't think poldi is a good player, even after seeing his match in ec.what's special with him?a powerful left foot, just this one.he can only play well against team such as poland and austria.when he is facing salgio ramos,he can do nothing.so germany lost the final, although others also shall be to blame, but poldi is
really not a good player who can be think as highly as frank ribery or miroslav klose.

Angela: My assertion is, that as long as he's at Bayern, he will always be better on the European stage than in the Bundesliga. Certain players have the set of skills that break down the 11 man defensive encampments that Bayern often sees, and Poldi is not one of them. Let's remember he had no trouble scoring in the league his last season in Köln; so his league troubles are unique to playing at Bayern. If we judged him on the UEFA Cup alone (5 goals in 12 matches), I think it can be considered acceptable progress for a young player. In a season ahead where there should be much more importance placed on the Champions League (they should honestly not even worry about winning the Bundesliga), Poldi is a guy you want on your squad.

Luke - My problem with Poldi is that he just doesn't perform at club level. You put him in the NT and he shines brighter than the majority of the team, but when he's given the opportunity with Bayern, he fails miserably on most occassions. Now, that's not saying that he won't do fabulous under Klinsmann.. we'll have to wait and see.

I am sure Poldi knows who Owen Hargreaves is. He should probably call him and get a clue about his situation. I'm not sure why we are just assuming two over-30 strikers will be as good or better than last season. Especially so for Klose, who I would argue has been in decline for 2 seasons (true that a declined superstar is still a star). Bottom line, there's a need to have him around. Lukas needs to play like a young superstar this season, and if he does, and still wants out, fine--he then can go anywhere he wants; Bayern wins too, if his value is driven up and he can be sold with a year left on the contract.

Podolski can play in midfield and with a counterpart like Mark he could vastly improve and learn there. It would be a good position for him and I'm sure that Klinsmann will find a spot for him because he believes in Poldi. We'll have to wait and see what happens, but I'm sure he's not very happy with the club forcing him to stay right now.

If Poldi's unsettled right now, wait until after another season of sitting next to Toni Kroos for 85 minutes every weekend. I just can't see him staying until the contract is up, as the situation will just get worse this year (barring an injury to Toni or Klose). Klinsi is a master motivator, but this will be a challenge. But we did just see that Poldi in the midfield works fairly well.

And we know that Frings and Mertesacker were talking to him constantly over the last month about coming up North, but can't see that happening either. Werder are obviously interested, by Bayern would let him rot on the bench before selling him to their chief rival.
