Poldi, Lucio and Willy
By: Angela | January 19th, 2009It’s finally official, Lukas Podolski is set to leave the Bavarian Giants in the summer. Over at the FCB website, there is an official announcement about the move. “We have accommodated Lukas Podolski’s explicit wish for a return to Köln,” commented FC Bayern Munich AG board director Uli Hoeneß. “This brings to an end all the rumours of recent weeks.” The 23-year-old Podolski said he was “delighted that a decision has been taken regarding my sporting future, and that the speculation about me will now end.” So finally Lukas gets to go home and Bayern have officially let go. It’s about time the break-up came to a resolved end.
Another of the big rumors swirling right now is that Lucio wants to leave when his contract expires. Good news for van Buyten, who wishes to sign another contact with Bayern and the other defenders (Breno) to start fighting for a position within the team that is long overdue.
Uli Hoeness also announced that it is his understanding that Willy Sagnol, who has been struggling to recover from an Achilles tendon injury, is going to put his career to an end and will be retiring. “I had a chat with Willy Sagnol this week and it is my understanding that he will end his career,” Hoeness told German tz newspaper. “I feel very sorry for Willy. This is a very sad fate.” Willy has not yet officially announced his retirement. The 31 year old Sagnol has been capped 58 times by France. He has played for Bayern since 2000, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2001 and a 2006 World Cup runner-up. Other career highlights include winning the German championship five times and the German Cup four times.

I think Sagnol deserves a testimonial match. He’s been a fan favorite and is probably the longest serving player in the squad at the moment. Shame he has to go this way.
Technically, it could be argued that Bayern is an aging squad, but with a decent mix of youngsters in some places. It is going to be imperative to not let players like Kroos go (except maybe on loan, Lahm is much better for that too) since keeping players like that will save tons on the transfer market.
I won’t be too upset if Lucio goes – he won’t get too many starts at many of the clubs on top of Bayern in the prestige pecking order, so I wonder where he might end up eventually…

Sad news about Sagnol. Unfortunately, I can barely remembering seeing Sagnol play for Bayern. I remember being impressed by him in the World Cup, but he’s been fighting injuries for a long, long time.
I guess I’m not surprised they wouldn’t let Poldi go before the end of the season, since they don’t know for sure if Donovan will stay beyond March and Olic doesn’t arrive till the summer. Still, I’d had big hopes for Poldi two years ago and I’m sorry that it hasn’t worked out. The Germany fan in me would’ve loved to see him go to a high-profile team, but it seems refreshingly perceptive of him to see beyond the years he’ll spend playing and instead opt set up a good personal life.
I think pretty highly of Lucio’s skills, but he’s been making noise for a while and maybe he’s just looking to move back to somewhere warm, where he can take on a less demanding role.

I agree with A Kap, sorry Juliet, in that I will be glad to see Lucio go at the end of the season. Hopefully we can offload him to AC Arseholes for an exorbitant price! His lazy performances this season warrant Bayern offloading him, especially since we have a ready replacement already waiting in the wings with the classly Breno! Not to mention Angelas favourite Van Buyten!

Honestly I’m not sad in the slightest to see Podolski go. He’s amazing internationally but has been a huge dissappointment for Bayern. However maybe if he put half as much effort into FCB as he did into bitching about how he wasn’t getting enough playing time he would have actually been playing. I don’t think his heart has ever been with FCB.
As for Lucio, if he needs help packing tell him to give me a call and I’ll be right over to help him get outta town. Not a fan!

Adam: You just won yourself a big fan. Not a fan of Lucio either. I would be glad to see him go, but I’m not completely hopeful because he pulls this gripe every time it gets cold in Munich.
Jocamryn: Why do they keep hanging on to him?
Juliet: The problem with Podolski, in my opinion, is that his ego got a little bigger than his game. In Cologne he was a super star. On the NT he was great, but they also built him up much bigger than he was which contributed to him thinking he was entitled to many things. He has never performed for Bayern the way he did Cologne or the NT. His heart never belonged to Bayern and that’s fine, but if you’re going to sign for a team then you have to give your all every performance and Lukas just never did that for Bayern. And yet, he still wanted everything the the guys who kill themselves for a glimpse of the starting line got. And I actually am not a fan of Lucio at all. I think it’s well past time for him to go.

They’re not holding on to him. they have offered him up on loan and nobody wants him…we can’t even GIVE him away. I’m no fan of him. What a flop.

Jocamryn: I’m not a fan either. It’s pretty sad when you can’t give someone away. *Sigh* Everyone else see’s it too I guess.

i’m really excited about the prospect of having Breno play more matches once Lucio leaves… of course, he will be behind Demichelis and Van Buyten, but damn, this kid is a future star, along with Kroos who they should not even think of offloading. These two players, Bayern must never quit on. They can quit on Sosa though, coz I already did, a long, long time ago.

I’ve read on the internet (Goal.com) that Bayern are offloading Jose Ernesto Sosa to Italian First Division outfit Palermo! That should make some people on this site very happy, now all we have to do is offload Lucio to AC Arseholes to complete the clean out of the dead wood lying around at FC Bayern now that Podolski will be going over the summer!

Hey Angela! It’s been awhile, but how are things?
Did you see the story about Ribery driving the bus in Dubai?
http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/09/ribery-takes-bayern-teammates-for-a-ride/
As you can see from the pic, Franck also stopped by the zoo!
