Robben’s new ‘hood & Champions League at a glance

By: Luke | August 27th, 2009

Bayern’s official website has confirmed the Robben transfer as a fait accompli. Credit to reader jocamryn, who stole a little of my intended thunder, as my original headline was going to be something like “Hoeness touts Robben’s versatility, Dutchman to start in goal Saturday”. Maybe Hoeness just held up a picture of Ludovic Magnin, and said “go get this guy” and Nerlinger accidentally picked up Robben instead. I really can’t make my mind up on this one.

On the one hand
How do you really justify 25 million Euros for a player who is in many respects, a redundant part to the current roster? What does Arjen Robben do exactly, for a defense that has been mediocre, a goalkeeper who isn’t up to the challenge of the limelight? It almost feels like a PR move, a move to be made because we had to do something. Robben’s injury history suggests that “Santa Cruz Jr.” is not an unwarranted moniker. Like Roque, will we watch this guy play a few great matches, and know he’s got the talent, but spend a lot more time watching him rehab? Maybe the board felt we’d enjoy losing matches 4-3 more than losing them 2-1?

On the other hand,
I do think Robben brings creativity that has been missing. Whether they want to use him as a true left winger, or in some other midfield composition to be determined, you can’t say that we don’t look real scary offensively on paper. It can look like a glut, but if there is a properly managed rotation, we’re going to have tremendous flexibility in attack. The deal may signify some deeper quid pro quo with Real Madrid that can strengthen us after Ribery is sold as well. And perhaps the board deserves credit, they aren’t so arrogant to realize that they haven’t put together enough of a team, and they quickly respond with a top-class acquisition.

Champions League Draw at a glance
Bayern will face Juventus, Bordeaux and Maccabi Haifa in Group A of the Champions League group stage. This is neither the best nor the worst of possible draws for the club. And it becomes a bit difficult to evaluate when you realize that even the struggling 06-07 team made quite a nice run in the Champions League. I haven’t watched a minute of Ligue 1 football, but Bordeaux are on form to start this new season, and knocked Lyon off their long held title perch last season. Juve haven’t faced much of a challenge yet in the new season, but we’ll see familiar faces with Brazzo as well as Diego playing for the Italians. What little I do know about Israeli football is that it is relatively lower-scoring than most European leagues, which may indicate that Maccabi Haifa may be a team that will require patience to score on. The key for Bayern will be to get points early in the schedule. The toughest match of the schedule will be the last, when Bayern go to Torino on December 8. Given our historical struggles in Italy, we’re going to want to have some points to fall back on before that match if at all possible. The schedule kicks off with a trip to Tel Aviv (which will host Maccabi Haifa’s matches) on September 15. With Germany looking back on the 70th anniversary of the start World War II in Europe in just a few days, the match promises to generate much cultural reflection. This may be one instance where the silly-seeming “Football Stadium Munich” name used during Champions Leagues matches will bring some measure of comfort to the visitors when they visit Munich on November 25, as “Allianz Arena” will likely still offend the sensibilities of some, 70 years on, as it did last year in the US.

Conspiracy theories about the acquisition abound, Luke, but I was just thinking that Bayern’s offensive problems could stem from a lack of confidence on the central defense. If the midfield is always looking over their shoulders to prevent a blow up in the back, how can they do anything meaningful up front? Hopefully Robben’s addition provides some more width and creativity, but it also means some other players might essentially become surplus (Altintop, anyone?). I’d still like to see Bosingwa come though…

You’re right in that the UCL draw could have been worse. However, Milan-Real and Inter-Barcelona will be sumptious for the neutrals. Didn’t Bayern play in Israel a few years ago – and that went off without incident, so the Haifa game should essentially be just “another” with most not worrying about the historical aspect too much. Bayern-Juve in December might just be the group-winner decider, unless the Bayern CB’s think/play (or lack thereof) otherwise…

Im really hoping this doesnt mean Ribery goes to Madrid… If he goes anywhere Im hoping its Barca. Ribs, Iba, Messi front three is nothing short of mind-boggling…

Robben only plays on the wings it does not matter which and since Ribery is now being used as a central play maker, Robben instantly will be the best wide player at Bayern. and with this buy there are finally enough wingers at bayern for van gaal to play 4-3-3 or more specifically the 4-2-3-1 variant that he likes. and once Robben is fit he will start and probaly altintop will now be benched and Schweinsteiger and Pranjic will compete for the left winger spot, which Pranjic will probably become owner of that spot because he is an actual winger. this goes a long way towards getting van gaal a team that can play his system. now the defense needs to be sorted but i doubt it will with only a few days left till the transfer window closes.

the cl group Bayern could be a group of death if Bordeaux plays good football, Juve are always strong and defensive teams always give Bayern problems. the Israeli team should not be much of a problem. Bayern have to be wary of Bordeaux.

I’m seriously surprised and really not happy with this transfer purchase.

    1. Robben is SO INJURY PRONE expect him to be off the pitch for considerable lengths of time i.e. 90%. He has to be the most fragile player going around and needs to be constantly wrapped up in cotton wool!!!!!!

    2. 25 million euro? Is there something seriously wrong with Uli? I mean this price is absolutely insane! In my book he is not even worth 2 million euro! And a 4 year contract, what the?

    3. Why are we not spending 25 million euro on a new right back, or central defender or both, this is clearly where we need to fill a gapping hole in our defense.

    4. Wouldn’t write Altintop off yet, don’t be surprised if he ends up with more game time than Robben because of point 1!!!

@John you maybe right about the formations, but FCB.de are still indicating that they want to play a midfield diamond with Ribery on the left, and Robben on the right now! Which would leave Altintop and Schweni as second choices and Sosa/Baumjohann/Muller at the tip of the diamond, and Van Bommel and Tymo vying for the DM spot.

@A Kap: Re: Bayern in Israel, that’s right, they played Maccabi Tel Aviv in the 04-05 Champions League season, but Vahid Hashemian (Iranian) didn’t make the trip because of a mysterious “injury”, (though they might actually have been better off without him). The thing that actually got me thinking about this was seeing Wolfsburg and Haifa listed together in Pot 4 and
thinking, “at least they don’t have to worry about another Dejagah controversy”. Which led me to recounting the whole New York-Allianz thing, which frankly surprised me at the time.

I’m not going to try to drive myself crazy figuring out all the tactical iterations, because you know the next excuse will be “it will take time to work Arjen into the squad, and then we’ll be playing much better”.

John’s right about Bordeaux–every match is important, but those could be crucial, as I see the Juve matches probably being an overall split of the points. I was actually hoping for AZ, so LVG could then just focus on the Bundesliga and spend one day prepping for those particular matches :)

You guys got a great deal, nothing to moan about.

Offcourse 25million is a lot and its too much for what Madrid at this time in the market should’ve got for him (about 20milllion). Nonetheless, he is a top worldclass player , very injury prone (like other greats in this respect Messi and Kaka come to mind), but that still is a cheap price for absolute toptalent (remember RM bought him for 36million 2 yrs ago). If you would give me the possibility between 25 mill for Robben or 30+M for Gomez I would not have to hesitate….Robben for sure.

Other point, it does not help out Bayerns bigger problems: true.

Just enjoy a class talent and hopefully this deal doesn’t include Ribery-agreements for the present, near or far future.

When one considers the current state of the market, 25 million euros for a player of Robben’s undoubted class and versatility represents a decent piece of business by Bayern. This signing makes the forward aspect of the 4-3-3 tactic complete and very impressive. However, the quality of the front is almost diametrically opposed to the quality at the back. It will be a test of the board’s competency whether they strengthen the back or not. If anyone on that board is happy with our current squad in defence positions, it would be huge cause for concern.

25 million is very cheap for Robben. He’s injury prone, yes, but he is a great player and will probably contribute more than everyone else regardless of how much time he actually spends on the field. He already did that at Real Madrid. Easily one of the better players, but he still got sold.

As a Barcelona fan, I am of course more than happy to see him leave la Liga and travel to your wonderful league. :)

Are Bayern sticking to 4-4-2 with a Diamond in midfield or will LVG finally get them to play his more beloved 4-3-3? If so, I believe you have done more than a sound deal business wise. I would give LVG some time and see how Robben and Ribery tear apart the Bundesliga.

My bayern (as a Barcelona fan would be the following)

    Butt
    Demichelis Braafheid
    Lahm Pranjic
    Van Bommel Tymoschuck
    Schweinsteiger
    Ribery Robben
    Gomez

This team has enough offense and creativity, good covering because of a hardworking midfield.
Penetration from second line by midfielders only the GK is a disaster and LB/CB is not up to Bayern standards.

One could also switch flanks and even turn shape of midfield triangle if FB and CB positions are better covered.

The only thing I’ll say about formation is that I’d like to see Muller up top for a few matches, with Ribery and Robben marauding up and down the wings.

When was the last time Bayern worked the January transfer window? If nothing is done now, and Bayern still has defensive troubles, I think Nerlinger might just chance his hand in January…

I can’t say I am unhappy. Anytime you can add a talent like Robben, you do it. Looking at what went for 25 million this year, he is worth it. Hey, if the defensive help isn’t there, might as well try to outscore the other team. One thing for sure, Bayern won’t have many boring games this year. It will be interesting to see what Bayern does next and who is going to play where. My guess is we may be tapped out on funds now, so guessing we’ve seen the last of the moves until January unless they sell off Schweini (bad idea with Robben’s history), Altintop or another midfielder. I would guess this late in the transfer period there just wasn’t any central defenders available that would have been a big upgrade and that the board may be trying to show Rensing a little confidence in hopes that maybe he can learn to relax and play now.

Let’s just hope the injury prone thing comes to an end now, then it may work out really well. I’m not going to get to worked up about things right now, because Bayern has the talent to dig themselves out of an early hole. If I recall correctly Wolfsburg was in 10th at the break last year.

Well, shucks. If I’d know Robben was about to become a Bayern player, I would’ve taken more pictures of him at the Real Madrid game here in the States.

I’ve thought Robben was a fantastic player since his time at Chelsea. Pacey and creative. I saw him make an audacious and wonderful chip over the DC United goalkeeper like it was nothing. I look forward to his contributions.
