[...] 2. Bayer can’t beat Bayern in Bavaria. Angela can be excused for spending little time on Bayern’s win over Leverkusen, and more on the newly acquired most hated merchandise of the Bundesliga. Leverkusen couldn’t win in Munich for 19 years and counting, so covering the same story each year is getting a bit old and boring. [...]

I actually thought the goal against was Lucio's fault as he got caught out of position.

Same as ever with Bayern (and most teams) when the team has posession and attacking players are making runs and making defenses adjust, they have success.

And yes Angela, van Bommel has to be one of the best holding midfielders there is. What a terrific player.

One stat from this match stands out: Shots were 21 to 4 in favor of Bayern. I think that gives a better idea of what the match was like than the scoreline. I hope Lucio impressed Angela, as this was one of his finest performances of the season. Ribery was all over the field; it seems like this is said every match, but he consistently and impressively applied pressure to a beleaguered Leverkusen defense. I came out of this match all the more impressed with Rene Adler--Bayern could easily have scored 5 to 6 times, and if this is the best his back 4 can do in a top match, he's even better than advertised. Be heartened though, fans of Zenit St. Petersburg-if you've found a way past Villarreal and Marseilles, you might be able to break down the Leverkusen D as well.

A sure sign of how dominant Bayern played was the double in-substitution of Podolski and Schweinsteiger. That is now our symbol for garbage time. Of course, Bayern immediately got arrogant and relaxed, although Leverkusen just looked like a top team for 30 seconds to earn their goal. But, ever since the Bolton match, Bayern has had a tendency to give away goals in spots like that, and make things more interesting than necessary. This is giving me a vision of a key away goal against, and somehow, they've got to check this tendency.

Save of the year from Kahn, ironically in the match where he was probably challenged the least this season. Tim Howard must be a Bayern fan, because he made a suspiciously similar save against West Ham about an hour later--surely just imitating his goalkeeping hero, right?

Next week, some unfinished business an hour north. There were a lot of crushing defeats last year, but perhaps none was worse than the newly re-hired Ottmar Hitzfeld looking even more clueless than Magath as Der Club pounded us 3-0. Could be the last Bayern-Derby for a while, so let's make it count.
