Transfer Rumors & Other News

By: Angela | November 18th, 2008

PSV have conceeded defeat and are saying they are giving up on the quest for Mark van Bommel at this time. They understand that no one is to leave Bayern during the winter transfer window and so they will not be acquiring van Bommel in January as they had hoped. However, they may make a bid for him once more when his contract runs out in June. According to Adrie van Kraaij, PSV’s transfer and scouting manager, Bayern have no intention of selling anyone in the winter window. “I have read that no-one is allowed to leave Bayern in the winter. We could offer them one million euros for a player whose contract has just six months left to run but Bayern have no money problems.” If PSV don’t make a bid for him at the end of the year, another club may try and get him. Currently, the rumor is that Liverpool are interested as well.

Over at Arsenal, Arsene Wenger isn’t happy with the partnership of William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre so he’s looking to fix up his defense. His decision is evidently to try and acquire Daniel van Buyten. Since van Buyten has already played in the Premiership (Man City), it is possible that Arsenal will try and make a bid for him in January. If the rumors are true and Bayern aren’t going to let anyone go in January, they may try and make a bid for him at the end of the year. While he’s not had much playing time with Munich (I won’t even go into how much this disappoints me), he is still getting regular call up for his National Team and if he does go anywhere, the Premiership would be good for me because at least I can still watch him play on FSC. Yes, this is me being selfish again.

Then you have the news that Willy Sagnol might retire in May. Sagnol says that he is considering retirement due to injuries. If things don’t appear to be any better for him in May, he will retire. He needed surgery on an Achilles tendon after playing for France at Euro 2008. Since then, an inflammation has hindered his recovery. Sagnol has played 184 times for Bayern and was a part of the team when Bayern won the Champions League in 2001. He hasn’t played a game this season.

Ottmar Hitzfeld has said he is surprised by the sloppiness of Bayern’s playing this season. “It is surprising that Bayern are dropping so many points against the weaker teams in the league.” When Bayern had a 2-0 lead and everything turned upside down against M’gladbach, Hitzfeld was speaking for the Premiere channel as a Bundesliga expert. “Against direct rivals they are highly motivated and far more concentrated but against Gladbach, for example, they let their concentration drop by ten or even 20 percent.” Hitzfeld went on to blame the defense for the mistakes against Gladbach. “That was down to individual mistakes in the defense. In a situation when all three points are already in the bag this simply can’t happen.”

Now we’re going to take a turn in the saga that is Andrei Arshavin’s story of leaving Zenit St. Petersburg. Deals with England and Spain fell through because Zenit won’t budge on their £25million price for him and Arshavin has criticized the club for an unrealistic vauation, but he is pleased to hear the rumors that Bayern may be interested in signing him in the January transfer window. “I don’t want to play for Zenit any more. Playing for Bayern is a dream.”

So there you have it. I’m not sure how I feel about any of this.

I agree with Ottmar Hitzfeld but I think that is the same with many clubs. I actually like the way Köln is playing and using good defending tactics even though they don’t have the best talent. As opposed to bringing in players I would also like to more of Toni Kroos and Thomas Müller as well as Mario Erb.

I don’t think it’s a question of if Bayern will acquire a Zenit player, but which one? Bayern have a long history of poaching players who starred against them. Arshavin would be coveted by anyone, but I have to think it’s particularly so for Klinsmann. Pogrebnyak, while less dynamic, would be a suitable replacement for Podolski. Tymoschuk might be the piece of the puzzle that helps an ailing defense, and makes sense with Ze Roberto and possibly van Bommel leaving.

I don’t think Van Buyten will be allowed to leave in January. That would leave too little depth in the central defence.

Sagnol and Oddo are up there age-wise, so while one of them will stay for the next season, Bayern will have to find an understudy to possibly take over the Right Back spot. Lell does not count.

Van Bommel’s leaving will leave a sort of leadership void, more so if Lucio leaves as well. Don’t know anything about Pogrebnyak. We need to find someone like Jeremies somewhere in the Bayern ranks. Surely a hardnosed defensive midfielder is lurking in Bayern II?

SELL SOSA! SELL SELL SELL! I somply don’t like him.

MvB, sorry to see it but he’s gone, however, he’ll finish the season.

PLEASE, let Poldi go back to Koln, they will scrape the money up for him.

Aufweidersehen Willy, You were great and will always have a place in the hearts of all FCB fans. At least give him an “absheid spiel”.

My friend and I were talking last weekend and as it looks, all the 30(ish) year old players on the verge of leaving need to go. Let’s rebuild.

We need to look to the future, with the exception of Oddo, none of the 30+ players will get renewed.

What are the odds Sosa will shine somewhere else, like a few other South American Bayern alums? Roque is, Paolo Guerrero is too and Pizzaro is sorta settling himself back at Werder.

I don’t know about the abschiedsspiel for Willy. Lizarazu was here just as long, maybe longer, and he didn’t get anything, neither did Effe, if I remember correctly. There’s no question Willy is loved by all of us and it’s sad it has to end, but sadly, so it is.

I think the real revolution will start this coming summer when Klinsi will really start bringing the players he wants. He might take the Hoffenheim route (are they now the new “Der Hoff”?) with younger and faster players, possibly with more/less skill like he did with some success with Odonkor…

The clean-out is not going to be pretty…

Who knew this would become a Sosa thread? Ok Sosa’s defensive mistake was no worse than anyone else in this system. I’ll give him a pass. Demichelis took some time to develop, Sosa should be given the same chance. He is more likely to be a Paolo or Roque than a dos Santos or Karimi. He hasn’t had much time to make something happen this year, but as always, remember Getafe!

Toni Kroos was great in the U21 match today. I’ll say it once again, there is no reason to loan him out.

Well Rummenigge has said that the Arshavin link is rubbish and that they want to talk to the players whose contracts are set to run out. He named van Bommel and Ze. I hope he’s being serious.

Also, another note is that van Buyten has now basically said that he’s flattered by the Arsenal interest but that he is perfectly happy at Bayern and he is working on improving himself there not looking for another club. Hopefully the Gods aren’t messing with me. ;)

Donovan as the 4th striker is fine. Let him play some Dritte Liga matches, and trot him out for 20 mintues against the Karlsruhes of the world. But I will be very alarmed if they jettison Poldi in the winter and feel that Donovan is the replacement.

Jean-Pierre to my knowledge Franck isn’t injured. He was just talking about the new pink boots he’s going to be wearing this weekend.
