van Bommel returns; Bayern wins

By: Angela | October 18th, 2008

Today, Bayern took the pitch to take on Karlsruhe and Captain van Bommel returned to the starting line, rightfully so. After coming off of a mid-week international game in which van Bommel scored the Netherlands only goal, he finally got put back in the lineup by Klinsmann. Klinsmann had announced Mark’s return to the line up by saying he hoped Mark’s return would provide the team with some stability. And stability he did provide. I’m not sure that the yellow card was deserved. Even the commentator was a little miffed by the yellow being given to him. Generally Mark’s fouls are quite a bit obvious, but I don’t know that this one was deserving. I didn’t think it was and neither did the commentator. I guess now he’ll have something to talk about when he see’s the team psychologist next.

Although I am very biased when it comes to Mark, I don’t think you can argue against me for today’s game. He had a spectacular game and was all over the place. Stealing the ball back each time it got turned over. He had a good read on one of the balls that went down into the corner by Karlsruhe and he got it back easily. I think today was a very solid performance by him. Unfortunately, I think it’s time to let Luca Toni see a little bench time. I’m not a fan of Podolski’s and today’s performance didn’t convince me that he should be getting game time at all, but he works well with Klose in the National Team and right now Toni can’t seem to do anything right. It’s time to give him a rest.

I’m still very, very disappointed in Lucio. Sometimes he does things that make me think that he’s never played a game in his life. He has some strong points, but unfortunately his mistakes outshine the good things the majority of the time. I don’t know what I think of Breno because he hasn’t played enough and Daniel returned from International duty with a minor injury so he wouldn’t have been an option. I don’t think there is a coach at Bayern that has the cajones to sit Lucio out regularly anyways. There were still some pretty sloppy plays by the team, but there were a few strong points which could be built upon. I certainly hope that this game will help them turn things around and that they’ll carry this momentum forward building on it and bringing home some more victories. I’m just concerned that there are still a lot of holes and a lot of weakness that could easily be exploited. As long as Lucio is in the line up, Demichelis is the only strong point of the defense. I do think that Demichelis and van Buyten work better together. It’s a shame that everyone thinks Lucio is such an indispensable part of the team.

I had read a rumor that if Bayern didn’t win this game, Klinsmann’s job may be in jeopardy. I haven’t read anything of solid information on that subject, considering just recently they guaranteed him a job through the season. Anyways, I guess he can breathe a sigh of relief since Bayern came home with a win. They should’ve scored two goals, but one is better than none. Just a few moments before the goal that was scored a good ball came through and both Borowski and Klose just stood there. Moments later, Klose rectified his error by scoring and doing his trademark flip which lead to him getting trounced by the whole team. I’m really starting to enjoy watching Oddo play. It’s too bad he’s just on loan. His crosses are just on target every time I’ve seen him do one and the through ball to Klose which lead to Klose scoring was just brilliant. And hey, he looks like he’s enjoying himself because he was the first to lead the attack on Klose after he scored. Evidenty Klose either hurt himself during the flip or aggravated the blister he had during mid-week games because he came off for Toni Kroos and when he came off, he had a bit of a limp. Hopefully everything is okay there.

Overall a somewhat better performance by the team, but still not a great one. There is still a lot of work to be done, but they can get there. They are the same team that won the double last season and I guess this means that Klinsmann’s job is secure for now, but they absolutely must continue to win games or fans and upper management alike will not be pleased. If it were anyone other than Klinsmann I think and ultimatum would’ve been issued already. We’ll just have to see what happens.

How long since Klose has done his salto? Of course he was a bit rusty and I think he might have tweaked something since he landed rather awkwardly.

One thing that concerns me is how deep the midfield played as a unit in the 2nd half. The crosses were deep diagonals, not the laterals one would hope for to be useful. It was almost as if Bayern was playing the long ball, except Toni was not there. Sure we had possession, but it was pretty hard with KSC playing the counter.

Important win, very important, but I hope we have a full strength squad for Fiorentina.

A Kap: I don’t even remember the last time that Miro did the salto to be honest. I do hope that he’s okay. He came of limping and that’s a bit of a concern, but hopefully it’s just something minor. He didn’t head back to Munich with the others so we’ll just have to see.

Considering the lofty expectations, I felt that Klinsmann job was *already* in jeopardy. Good showing by the side; I think Karlsruhe was just what they needed to get back on track.

A very nice first half; I couldn’t find much to complain about, the chances were there. There was clearly something non-leg related wrong with Toni and we find now that it was ribs. Van Bommel did deserve the card, but loved the reaction. Lahm’s runs show he continues to grow as a player but let’s hope it’s not at the cost of his defending skills.

Ribery is not yet himself, although taking him off was probably a preservation move. At that point the team seemed like they weren’t sure who was who. Schweini’s effectiveness dropped off, and no adjustment was made when KSC decided to give a lot less space in the midfield. The goal was all Oddo; and it’s concerning that our strike force found no way to create. Angela rightly pointed out the defensive lapses of the day, but it was a desedved win.

Bayern played poor this game as well the only difference between this game and the last game was that Bayern won. as Hoeness said here http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=583430&cc=3888 Bayern were lucky to win but it keeps them in a position where they can push up the table and take the lead. Bayern should not be matching up so evenly with bottom of the table teams. Bayern are not winning back the ball when they loose possession and it allowed KSC to hold off Bayern for most of the match and even to make a few dangerous plays in and around Bayern’s box. Klinnsman system is based on “brute force” attacking and not creativity or quick countering. thats why Ribery has not been outstanding and why Bayern’s strikers have not been dominating, Klinnsman changes the way how the team plays match to match so hopefully he will eventually unshackle Ribery and allow him to take on defenders and make plays like he used to and let Bayern start countering quickly to allow the strikers to take advantage of numerical defensive mismatches and start scoring regularly again.

“I’m not a fan of Podolski’s and today’s performance didn’t convince me that he should be getting game time at all,”

Well, he played a great cross over to Oddo who then set up Klose for the winning goal. So he was involved in the only really noteworthy event of the game. I guess Toni will get a chance to play against his former club in the CL, but the Klose+Podolski combo might be worth a try as long as Toni’s poor form continues.

Chris, I was referring to this: I think Karlsruhe was just what they needed to get back on track.

Jan: I am not a fan and I don’t think he is starting material right now, however, I do think that the combination of Klose/Toni isn’t working and Poldi seems to work better with Klose so I feel it’s time to let Toni sit it out for a bit until he gets his form back.

Off Topic:Klinsmann On Van Bommel And Poldi

    http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=921037

Poldi is a world class player, He has proven that at the WC06 and Euro08. Klinsi Contradicted himself. Toni is out of form, so WHY isn’t he riding the bench? I acknowledge that he has proven his standing over and over, but he’s in a slump and we need to do whatever it takes to win. Egos need to be checked in at the door when the players walk onto the pitch.

Correct jocamryn, “Egos need to be checked in at the door when players walk onto the pitch” that’s why Bayern need to desperately drop the lose cannonball named Lucio onto the bench. He’s gonna cost Bayern with his continued sloppiness in defense!

jocamryn: I agree that the egos need to be checked, but ego is a big part of Poldi’s problem. However, I do think it’s time to try the Podolski/Klose combination because Toni is having a rough period.

zermatt: I completely agree with you about Lucio. I just can not find a reason to see this world class player that everyone keeps telling me he is. I really just don’t see it.

    1) CL Game last night! Unbelievable, with some defensive improvements, we’ll be inflappable.

    2) It’s official, I’m a Massimo Oddo fan. Once I find out his stay is more permanent his jersey is going in my collection.

    3) Kevin Kuranyi looks to be teetering on leaving shalke during the winter pause….. Given the OPTEMPO on our team, could he fit in? In form, I think he’s top flight. If we could build 2 pairs of striker partners we could really put it to the competiton having fresh strikers every other match.

An additional striker and a back fielder would imrove our depth, however once again, create internal rivalries.

I’ll be home from Iraq in time for the Bucharest CL game on the 25/11, I’ll be sitting in sect. 244 or 306 at the Arena, still waiting to get home before I lock anything in. Should it fall through, I’ll be visiting the Sebener Strasse before the winter pause for autographs again.

I missed the CL game, but have seen highlights. I’m glad to see that Klose seems to be finding his form. Hopefully it will stick!

Poldi looks to be starting for 3 BL fixtures as Luca is out for at least 10 days. Kudos to Luca for playing through the pain. Poldi needs to seize this opportunity. However honestly, this is the exact reason why we have extra stikers. This resloves the questions about Luca being out of form. He’s been medically benched, hopefully he can regroup and find his form during his break.

What concerns me is that Lahm is out of the mix for a month with Lell filling in for him. We got Oddo to replace Jansen, ensuring that Lell had more time to grow. Now we have no choice…. Lahm, we’ll miss you, PLEASE get well a quickly as you can!

Jocamryn: I am not a fan of Lell. At all. Lahm will be sorely missed. Hopefully Oddo can make up for someone who is sub-par in comparison. Lahm will definitely be missed.
