What a difference an N makes
By: Luke | November 20th, 2009I’ve taken a little break for the international week, but events certainly have not, and with the possibility of a full scale revolt on our hands after this weekend, the first thing I want to do here is a little news roundup.

File under: Malcontents
Uli Hoeness’ unsurprising response to Phillipp Lahm
Luca Toni’s “sort of” apology
Martin Demichelis tries to sound like a leader, fails then decides to tell us where he’d rather be
File under: Double up on Dutch
Beckenbauer and Hoeness begin preparing the hard landing for Louis van Gaal. Bonus: Doctor’s comment on Franck Ribery’s teeth.
From “who are you going to get?” to “I’m about to get fired”
Beckenbauer and Hoeness actually admit an error! (Warning-translation is pretty bad, best to read auf Deutsch if able)
File under: Somebody loves me
Expect to see more Holger Badstuber at left back.
Meanwhile, Badstuber returns the love to his coach.
Irresistible force vs. Immovable Object:
Bayern Munich are set to take on table-topper Bayer Leverkusen at 9:30 a.m. Eastern on Sunday. The match will be shown live at ESPN360.com and on ESPN Deportes.
Although the visitors from the northwest haven’t won in Munich in 20 years, that seems to be about the only stat in our favor. It’s hard to find a lot of weaknesses in Bayer Leverkusen’s game, and it may be even harder to find something bad to say about them, considering our erstwhile coach Jupp Heynckes has finally molded this maturing group into a consistent, competitive team. In contrast to Bayern’s transfer flops, Leverkusen made moderate, targeted purchases with Sami Hyypiä and Eren Derdiyok, which have stabilized a suspect defense and softened the blow of losing Patrick Helmes to injury quite nicely. Leverkusen will be without Simon Rolfes and Renato Augusto due to injury, and though the club was a bit unlucky in two draws to Dortmund and Schalke, step-in Stefan Reinartz scored his first Bundesliga goal in the last match against Frankfurt. Be sure to check out the Bayer 04 Offside for more on the match.
Bayern and Louis van Gaal enter the match with backs now firmly planted against the wall, but that won’t help the injury situation very much. Ribery is still out and Arjen Robben is now rated “very doubtful”. So much for the amazing healing powers. In addition, Edson Braafheid and Danijel Pranjic are both said to have “seasonal flu”. Could it be transfer-seasonal flu? Ivica Olic is still a week away, although progressing nicely. Perhaps the best chance of Bayern scoring is the fear of Miroslav Klose, who was cleared to return to practice Thursday after several days in quarantine because his children had swine flu. You never know, Rene Adler may have a Howard Hughes like fear of germs.
3 points for 3 points
So, what can Bayern do in this match to come away with a desperately needed 3 points? These things seem so basic, and yet we haven’t seen much of them.
1) Maintain a sustained attacking tempo.
Too often we have seen a 7 or 8 minute buildup in possession and attack disperse too easily. I don’t expect to see end to end action, despite Leverkusen’s new found confidence. Slop and speculation in the offensive end needs to be curtailed. As always, Schweini will be a key measure of this.
2) Stingy Butt
It’s so perfect actually, because I do have two meanings here. I want to see Mark Van Bommel really pushing the limits and putting people on their rear ends. Despite Leverkusen’s adept dead-ball skills, Bayern ultimately stand to benefit from controlling the pace and intimidating the visitors. In addition, we’ll need the best out of Jörg Butt, who despite seemingly not holding much of a grudge against his former employers, ought to find a way to get mad at them for 90 minutes.
3) Make Lemonade
Continue to give Braafheid and Altintop opportunities. These are players who do have the ability to create off the dead balls, and since there is no natural playmaker on the field without Robben, the frees and corners become all the more important. The last thing I want to see is Toni/Gomez trotting on in the 70th minute to add a 3rd striker who flops around for 20 minutes creating nothing.
The Toni we need
Of late, it’s been Bayern’s own Toni Kroos who’s been garnering the headlines and the highlight videos for Bayer 04. With 3 goals in the last 5 matches, and two highlight reelers among them, the still-only 19 year old is progressing nicely. Of course there will be a danger that Kroos will never come back to Bayern, especially after his oft-promised future #10 was given to Arjen Robben. Undoubtedly, Rudi, Jupp, Uli and Christian will sit down for a little chat on the subject this weekend. However, I don’t think putting him on loan was such a bad idea at the time. At a basic level, Kroos needed to play. It’s perhaps only a shame that Bayer is not playing in Europe this season, although Kroos did get some seasoning the UEFA Cup campaign two seasons ago. Kroos gives his own rather unrevealing views to the official Bayer 04 website in an interview posted today.
Always looking forward
One thing to remember when pining for Toni Kroos-the great teams don’t just have potential stars, they have potential constellations. And while Bayern II may sit 20th and last in the 3. Liga at present, there are still things to get excited about. Presenting: David Alaba

Nice preview. It’s a scary match as this is the line-up I expect:
————–Butt——————
Lahm—–Buyten—Micho—-Badstuder
————–Bommel—————-
Tymo—————————Piggy
————–Muller—————-
———-Toni——-Klose———-Not exactly awe-inspiring. I hope for a great match and a win for us to settle the waters. However, the realist can see a 2 or 3 goal defeat. Most likely outcome is another draw.

of that lineup, if Mueller and the strikers click, we could win. I’m not too worried about the defense you present.
T/M/S need to come together in the midfield, that’s where our problems IMHO primarily lay.
Ny fingers are crossed for a win… however… if losing means LvG gets replaced….. well, we need 3 points, but LvG leaving? quite tempting.

The main thing that bothers me about Toni Kroos, is why on earth would Bayern loan a guy to a team that is competitive enough to be a rival for the title. I am sure some bottom feeders would have loved to have him.
Shane, why the hell would you want Toni in the line up? He needs to pay and pay dearly for what he did. Besides, as much as you all hate Gomez, he has scored more goals in the about the same amount of time played. The only goals Toni scored were in the DFB, he has 0 in CL and 9 in Bundesliga. I really don’t thing Van Gaal will play him or it sends a message that, “hey, do whatever the f**k you want, only going to cost you money anyway”.
I’m not on the fire LvG bandwagon. Injuries have decimated this team, and any other Bundesliga team would be fighting their way out of the relegation zone with a similar injury situation.
Instead of pointing fingers, which has become a favorite thing for Bayern’s board to do, they may want to start looking in the mirror. As wrong as he was for saying it in public, Lahm is very correct. I’m pretty sure I commented last summer about the haphazard transfer acquisitions they made… Anyway, it’s really hard for me to fault LvG. He did not hurt Ribery, Robben, Olic, Van Bommel, DeMichelis, Klose (he’s so obviously playing hurt), and any I have forgotten that have missed significant time. It’s really hard for me to get too on a coach who is trying to install a new system, and who is missing significant pieces of the line up for quite a bit of time. How many coaches do we need to go through to realize that the board bears at least and possibly more responsibility for this start as anything else, well maybe not as much as injuries.

mistyped, meant to say 0 in the Bundesliga for Toni’s goals.

I agree with Roger, the Bayern board is more of a problem than anything else. However, about Toni, before that petulant leaving of the stadium, he was showing more hustle than Gomez was. That might not exactly warrant a start, but Gomez has been absolutely rubbish so far this season. He hasn’t used his size to muscle into position, he hasn’t been able to head the ball properly, and the less said about his shooting accuracy so far, the better. What choice does Van Gaal really have? I say, play Van Buyten up front with Badstuber and Micho at the back.
Bayern needs to play out of their skin to win. I’m not really looking forward to the match…

Re: Kroos going to Leverkusen vs a lesser team, 20/20 hindsight plays a role. Not too many of us would have chosen Leverkusen as a legit title contender at the start of the season. I think tomorrow tells us whether that tag sticks or not. You want to him to play with a high level team, and one that could play in Europe (which didn’t work out). Not so different than loaning Lahm to Stuttgart.
I can’t endorse Luca Toni getting another minute on the field for this team. What desire or motivation could he possibly have at this point? It’s not like he needs to score a goal against Leverkusen and Bochum to convince an Italian team to take him. It’s now just like Podolski last season, it’s just a waste of space to have him out there.
Of course the counterpoint to firing away at the board is that LVG bears the responsibility for Pranjic and Braafheid, who by most any measure, have been worse than Gomez, Tymo, Olic and anyone else not acquired under LVG. Pranjic’s failure in particular has really set back the 4-3-3 development.
You figure, LVG has Müller, Badstuber, Braafheid, Pranjic, Van Bommel, maybe Van Buyten in his camp..but who else wants to play for this guy at this point? If they lose Sunday though, I think he survives at least through to the Champions League match. If they manage not to win that, with the annual meeting going on, I really don’t know how they go forward with him. Maybe Gerland takes the helm through Christmas, and then they retool with either a Nerlinger teammate/ex Bayern player, or they dust off an Uli-generation guy for one more run, though I hardly have an idea who’s left out there.

Regarding loaning Toni Kroos out to a reasonable Bundesliga side was a master stroke, because:
A) The club could see if he could perform for a half decent bundesliga outfit. This gives the directors an opportunity to judge him in another environment.
B) It’s given Toni Kroos heaps more confidence in himself again, and has enabled him to show off his skills, not to mention his mental and physical aspects in first team football.
I expect and hope he comes back to play for the first team @ Bayern on a regular basis since Ribery will not be here next season. That much is clear!
Leverkusen’s success so far can be much attributed to the brilliant coaching of Jupp Heynckes. Remember last season he got Bayern out of a sticky situation and won 4 out of the 5 games he coached Bayern for, last season! It’s no wonder he’s got a young Leverkusen side buzzing!
Regarding tomorrows game I strongly feel we need to bring Altintop into the starting 11 in midfield, put him on the right side of midfield. Leave Tymo on the bench.
I hope LvG puts a bomb under Schweni to get this guy to play to his potential instead of strolling around like he his on some lazy afternoon jaunt!
I agree with giving Gomez a starting berth alongside Klose. Who knows he might actually score, although I am no fan of his I think Bayern would have been better off buying Dzeko for 30 million euros last season than Gomez. As I don’t think Gomez can cope in pressure cooker situations! Hopefully he’ll prove me wrong today!

Trap is a Hoeness-era coach available now that Ireland is out of the World Cup

You can add one more to the list: Piggy really hates Badstubers guts and it looks like the feeling is mutual.
The team is two thirds dysfunctional… some sort of shock therapy is needed.

I would much rather see Ottmar Hitzfeld on the lines than Trap.

A few comments. Both Van Gaal and Klinnsman have brought positives; but both have failed miserably in one key measure of the team’s performance; Klinnsman in defence and Van Gaal in offense. In both cases the lack of results has turned the fans against the coach and sucked the winning mentality out of players in the team. Regardless of coaching potential, when this happens the board has no choice but to clear the slate and start over for the best of the club. In regards to the player Schweini – I have no doubt as to his quality as evidenced by his play with the DFB-11, but despite career high of 9 goals and 14 assists in 08-09 he has continually been singled out for criticism and I am certain this pressure more than anything else is the cause of his sub-par play. In regards to the player Lahm, he has been under-performing worse than Schweini this season. I believe this is also a confidence problem as he has previously shown the highest class playing on either flank. In regards to the player Ribery, I don’t think he is as unhappy as the press would suggest – he loves the Bayern Munich fans and knows he has the support of the Bayern Board. If this season can be turned around I honestly think he will see out his contract and leave in 2011 while the rest of us salivate at the prospect of David Alaba’s rising star. A big risk, yes. But one that I feel is worth it for the longterm development of the club. Let’s just hope Ottmar will consider a second job for a few months.
