Bayern draws against Braga

By: Angela | November 30th, 2007

I didn’t get to see this whole match. I had to stream it because it wasn’t shown in the US, but from what I seen of the first half, it seems that Bayern is probably lucky that they were able to hold Braga to a draw. It seemed that Braga was a lot more aggressive in the first half and that Bayern didn’t quite play up to their standards.

As much as I am a fan of Bayern, I think it is time for them to take a loss. They’ve gotten far too comfortable and far too relaxed. They haven’t been playing good football for some time now. They lay back and miss chances that they should never miss. Offside!Toni got a yellow. So did Mark. I am a fan of van Bommel. And I miss his aggressive style of play now that he’s been put into a new role for the team, but yesterday saw some of the old style of van Bommel play. He is my favorite Dutch player.

At the half the score was still 0-0 after a goal at the 22 minute mark by Braga was revoked because of a foul on Lucio. Three minutes after the second half started, Bayern took the lead with a goal by Miroslav Klose. Linz scored Braga’s equalising goal at the 67 minute mark. And Willy Sagnol made an appearance, albeit brief.

This game pissed me off. What the heck is going on in the dressing room? Bayern Munich and their roster of current and former national team starters (with the one exception of the mediocre Lell) couldn’t do more than PUT ONE BALL in the back of Braga’s net? Werder Bremen’s team of benchwarmers spanked Real Madrid (in an awesome game) and Bayern can only draw with the 7th placed Portuguese team? WTF? I hope there are some strong words being said behind the scenes.

I’m really disappointed by Bayern’s UEFA Cup performance as well. Everyone was talking about how it’s a shame this team isn’t playing in the Champions League etc. But this Bayern Munich barely escaped Zagreb with a Toni Kroos inspired victory in overtime and drew against Bolton and Braga. What is astounding though, is that they are still top of their group, so a victory in their home match against Aris Saloniki will assure they’ll finish as group winners.

I only saw the second half, though I would give them the excuse that Braga were playing rather dirty, which the referee did little to stop and then Bayern started to get back at them, which almost got van Bommel a red card….

They’ll play against Bielefeld next who’ve been loosing by 4-1 up to 8-1 scorelines quite frequently this season. This could be a good match for Bayern, to find their rhythm again.

You’ve got think it was pretty difficult to get up for a match against the seventh place team in the Portugese league. I think that the winter break will do them some good and get them back on track, because anything short of all victories the rest of the way will see them fall back of Werder Bremen or Hamburg or both.

Bayern have a great chance to capitalise on the Northern Derby. Either Bremen or Hamburg or both are bound to lose points, so unless Bielefeld cause the biggest upset of the season, Bayern will move clear a bit of at least one rival.

Braga has an extremely interessant team, full of internationals. It is not a team easy to defeat, specially in their ground. In top of that, they have hired a good coach recently.
Yet it seems Juliet and Jan were expecting a Bayern goal fest… It seems like we have here a clear case of not knowing your enemy…
Bayern played agains one of the goods teams of the portuguese league, which is not that weak.

Nuno: no I didn’t expect a Bayern goal fest. Nor did I intend to belittle Braga or the Portuguese league. This is about Bayern Munich’s arrogance. They recently belittled Bremen, Schalke and Stuttgart for their poor CL performance. They plan to win the UEFA Cup and want to play a big role in next year’s Champions League, but so far they failed to back any of their claims with good performances.

    Fair enough Jan.
I was not aware of that particular arrogance dispel from Bayern.
    Cheers.
